  1. I took a buddy ice fishing for the first time a few years ago.  I drilled a hole and gave him a rod with a ratso jig with a spike.  I hadn't even started to drill a second hole and he is over there yelling What do I do? What do I do? I couldn't believe anyone would get that jacked up over a perch!  I went back to him and the reel is almost empty and still going!  After 30 minutes or so I finally see it and it was a carp. It took 10 more minutes to finally get it through the hole( it barely fit through a 8" hole). Probably weighed 15# or so.  Going by the spring cold water sucker theory we probably should have tried it?

  2. What's the best way you have found to attach the 2 lb plate?

I've used a milk crate full of bricks to steady my stake mounted mojo. I zip tied the stake into one corner of the crate and weighted it down.

  3. I make mine using Mortons Tenderquick, pickling spices, and onion. It also comes out great. On a side note, once you make it into corned beef, you can turn it into pastrami by simply rubbing it with pepper, paprika ,and coriander and then smoking it. This is very delicious!

I also just purchased a pressure canner and am going to can a bunch for something different and to take up less freezer space! Lots of good ways to use goose once you figure them out. I also use the legs and braise them or grind them to make sausage. You get about a third more meat if you use the legs than if you just breast and the leg meat is great but somewhat time consuming to get.

    Kevin,

How long do you smoke it for?

  4. What size are the reels? For now, since you have a 10 color I would probably start with a 7,5,3 color to cover the water column. As you add more tackle you can double up on set-ups to cover the water when you find a hot set up for the day.  I run 40# power pro for backing and have a section of mono between the core and the backing to attach the planer board clip to. Hope this helps.

  5. The only place I like Blue Jays is in the deer woods.  They are like a deer early warning system!  If its quiet and they start going nuts, you better pay attention because there is a deer close by somewhere.

Red Squirrels on the other hand....... suck.  When I was about 7 yrs old following my grandfather through the mountains of Vermont he stopped one day and asked me if I had ever "barked" a red squirrel?  Of course I had no idea what he was talking about.  This irritating squirrel shows up next to us and starts their usual BS, so my grandfather takes aim and inch inside the tree from the squirrel with his .270 and BANG! Squirrel falls the 2 feet to the ground.  I go over to look at it and it is full of splinters! He  "barked" the squirrel.  After an hour of sitting there and seeing nothing, another irritating little squirrel shows up.  He asked if I wanted to try and "Bark the squirrel"?   "Absolutely!"  He gives me the rifle which is a pre-64 Winchetser Model 70, heavy as hell but an awesome rifle.  I draw down on the squirrel and fire and I don't see any squirrel??? I turn around and look at him and he is just about falling over he is laughing so hard   .  He tells me I missed the tree and absolutely vaporized the squirrel!  We got back to camp and he told that story a dozen times, each time laughing just as hard as the first time.

I have that rifle now and have refinished the stock to its original beauty.  Since our unit went to rifle a few years ago I have carried and shot a few bucks and does with it. My grandfather carried it, my dad carried it and I have carried it.  To say it is my most prized rifle would obviously be a huge understatement.  When My son is old enough it will become his just as it became mine.  Damn, I miss my Grandfather even after all these years.

  6. I've said it before on a different thread.  If the deer walks in and your heart rate skyrockets and your excited then that's the buck you should shoot.  Don't let the hunting shows ruin your time in the outdoors anymore than they already have.  No matter how big or small a buck you shoot there will always be naysayers.  If it makes you happy and excited to harvest it let it fly!

  7. Southeastern new York is a nightmare for ticks.  Come in from the woods especially goldenrod type cover and it looks like your clothes are literally crawling.  I bought a Yellow lab when we lived there primarily so we could see the ticks on him.  He was out in the yard one day, and never left the grass for 20 minutes or so,  when he came in I picked 35+ ticks off him.  I had Lyme and it sucks big time!

  8. Chaos,

As you said there are many possibilities, but I do know that it did not run into anything before it reached the deer, it was a completely clear line of flight.  Like I mentioned above, I'm really wondering if the tip did bend on impact?  If so, then I would assume it would have to have contacted some bone even though there was no audible sound.  That would obviously deter penetration immediately.
