  1. Nice buck! Just set mine out again tonight. Nothing but coyotes for me so far

Do you guys have a lot of yotes up there? can you hunt them at night. I thought I read that you can't light at night in NY. If you could I would purchase a NY hunting license as other than walleye fishing, hunting yotes is my second most favorite thing to do outdoors.

  2. That was a real First class act on your part Jplug, I'm sure that guy appreciates the effort and thought you went through to get this bag back. It's nice to see and hear that there are some respectable folks out there yet,  and to read something about someone doing a good deed out of the goodness of their heart. You will be rewarded in some way, some day it will come in a form of, the big guy in sky was looking over me. why, oh yea that time I gave that black bag back to that guy. Hmmm?

  3. Welcome aboard Henry another PA. person, I'm from PA. also the Poconos, which is still to far away from the lake LOL. Any problems just ask as for fishing problems to boat problems these guys on here are very knowledgeable, and are willing to help anyone out. Good luck, hope to be reading your post next year. :)

  4. Hey pap,

The rod holders are reinforced with with PVC and then they are basically bolted to the mounts as they cannot take the force of a dipsey and salmon hit. U can reinforce them in various ways and they will work okay. The modified rod holders are being replaced by Bert's as we speak so in the long run it might be easier to just stick with the rachect types. Good luck

Thanks for the info, I'll just continue on with the Berts, just thought maybe there was a chance to save a buck. Put $ 80.00 in the gas tank. Yea Right!!!

  5. I never fished the bay, (Black River Bay) to big of an area, I do fish the Black River though with a good amount of success, I usually set up in the first turn down from the Dexter launch about 2/3rds the way down just before the ripples end then anchor up and I usually use my down riggers and put out a J plug(flor.orange/firetiger) about 30ft line then lower the ball almost against the bottom, it's like only 8-10ft deep, but there is a deep hole they have to come out of and your plugs will be right in their face. The other rigger I swing out into the current and run a chrome dodger with a fly or anything that whips around a lot, or I also used little Cleo's with some degree of success, later in the year you might hook up with a steel head or a brown, I also have hooked up with a Coho and a occasional walleye on the Cleo's. hope this helps as I caught quite a few this way, and is easy fishing. We also caught them just trolling with the brightest, ugliest lure you have in the box, they are striking out of aggression this time of the year.

  6. SharkHunter I noticed in the one photo where you are holding up a real nice king I noticed that there was a plastic rod holder reinforced with a piece of pvc pipe, are you using those style holders for salmon fishing if so how are they holding up. I never thought of reinforcing them with anything, good Idea!!. I have 4 of the berts rod holders and looking to add 2 more I have 4 or more of the same type you have and if you never had any break I'll use those as I'm not always going to be using them, but in the spring for brown and walleye they should make the grade. I was trolling for walleye one year and something hit with such great force it sheared one of my plastic ones right off, thinking a big Northern didn't lose my rod but didn't get to see what is was either. :(

  7. New to the site: I'm wondering if anybody has replaced the wooden part of the transom

I have replaced the transoms on 4 boats it's a project and not something to take on if you are in a hurry or not that handy with wood working tools or the ability to adapt and overcome in such a situation that you might think it's a short cut that will bite you in the as$ later in the project. An other thing you need to be experienced in is fiberglass work, which I had some of each and it came in handy especially in the fiberglass end of the job. The trick is to keep the outside piece of glass as intact as much as possible, then cut the inside away to get at the 3/4 ply board. Having worked at a stair making facility I made the whole transom piece out of 5/4 board green decking mat. I planed both sides glued them together in a glue rack and then planed them down to 3/4 so we had a solid piece of pressure treated board 4ft tall by 3/4 thick and what ever length was needed, then start putting everything back together. Usually takes me 3 days.

  8. Get a can of black spray paint for plastic bumpers, works great, I tried it on one of my Dipsies I had a bunch of those orange/yellow and painted them green, I'll have to try the black if it's working still next year. I'm done for the year headed back under the knife for my back AGAIN sucks but I'll be ready for the browns in the spring. PAP

  9. I still haven't found any black spray paint that holds up so I paint them up black after one or two times out but they work....I've also found that even super glue won't hold the rings on the dipseys (because of the type of plastic) so I went to hot glue with the glue gun and so far so good.

[ /quote] Get a can of black paint for plastic bumpers works great I tried it and it works great Advance Auto carries it. must be for plastic bumpers though.

  10. Thanks SK8man You certainly have a wealth of info. stored up there. Thanks for the loads of info. I'm only 47 years old and have the nick name PAP, I'm constantly being told I should of been born 50 years ago, I guess my actions and thoughts are old fashion, and I am one for the old school ways. My boat is 31 years old, all my fishing stuff is older also, my new depth finder didn't last long either, I took that piece of $hit back it was a Elite7 don't purchase one of those units unless you have stock in a migraine pill comp. My down riggers are electric but are older and I don't know Even what they are other than cannons with a 4ft booms, so I will put some of these old school lures and ways to use. One other thing. the Sutton 71's what other number was a 44 I think what were they supposed to imitate. Thanks pap.

  11. Silver bullet J-plug is an old standby & still popular today.  Hofschnieder used to make the redeye wiggler which is still a great pike & walleye lure.  I think made by eppinger today. If you have one stamped by hofschnieder, it's definitely "vintaqe."

    Tom B.

    (LongLine)

LongLine, there are 3 lures stamped by Hofschnieder one is a huge spinner with a copper blade which is where it is stamped, it's got a pretty heavy wire with a loop on the end where you attach your line, then 3 red beads a crimped stop then 3 red beads, then a stop the blade a stop,3 more red beads and a huge swinging treble hook. Looks sweet, and the other 2 are redeyes, which both have a weird double hook on each end, so where do you attach your line? the Canadian wiggler which is still in the original box has a weird set up of 2 treble hooks on the front, it has a strait wire that goes left and right of the lure with 2 little treble hooks attached to each end of the wire and one a little bigger on the back. I looked up the lure and there is a vintage site that dated back to the early 50's but this doesn't look like those, so it says it could be early 40's when they first came out. "My room" in the basement, I have antique lures and these are going to be added to my collection, I just started collecting old lures, I don't buy them if I run across them, then I add them to my collection I might have 15-18 but these will put me near 20 now. It's fun!!

  12. Nice going Orange Belly, nice to see some eyes on the board, they are definitely well fed from the picture, just curious as to what kind of fish is sticking out of the mouth of the one walleye. Can tell you are a walleye fisherman, "orange belly" LOL

  13. Keep it and run it.  The "old stuff" still catches fish - the secret that time forgot...

I was like a kid in a candy shop, I know there were some lures that got mentioned in another post, about the old stuff that still works, I remembered the names as I went through this stuff, actually I took it all and I'm still sifting through it. There were poles but all short and like broom sticks, maybe that was the thing years ago. A lot of smaller size Kwik fish attached to some of the smaller blade harnesses. It was kind of cool seeing some of these vintage lures, some I looked up and they are actually collector Items, Hofschnieder corp. Rochester NY, Lindquist Bros. Windsor, Tecumseh, Ontario Can.

  14. A friend of mine has a (junk removal business) and called me to check this stuff out before he scraps it, he tells me that a old lady is cleaning out her garage and her husbands fishing stuff is going to the garbage also, and I can have what ever is worth anything to me so, she says "my husband used to fish up on Lake Ontario, take what ever you want at least someone else could put it to good use" So I started looking this stuff over and I came across these reels, are they worth spooling them up? SG 27LC Sea Line. 210yards 20# is max. Mitchel Rip Tide E70CD. 225 yards of 30# test. Daiwa? just a level wined reel with 225yards of 25# test and another reel can't find a name on it, it looks like a Okuma or Depth master but not exactly anyway it holds 310yard of 25#test all the drags seem smooth. A tackle box that consisted of some stuff I don't even know what it is, for instance a big brass swivel with a round, white eyelet attached with that red shrink tubing the eyelet looks like it come out of two little wires that are shaped like a Y holding it in, any idea? Lots of those, Sutton spoons quite a few the #71 is on them. Some are silver on both side and some are silver/gold some are smaller. Then they are Dipseys size0 and bigger, then there is about 15 jay plugs. The Silver Bullet must have been hot back in 1988, size 4 must be 6-8 in that size and the same amount  in size 3. Still in the box are 2 size3 "Glows in the dark" purchased in 1988 for a price of $4.99. Then there is 3 Les Davis dodgers rigged up with a squid blue/white glitter with inside tinsel, they must have been the lure of the time, there are 6 of the squids, also a red Deep Six diver, and a bunch of cannon releases, some stackers, some with white pads that you adjust with a knob, these have the adjuster on the top  and some lock into place with ratchet type teeth you squeeze together and adjust the tension with a knob on the side. I think these are DR releases and the white padded ones are planer board releases. Then there are cowbells of all colors and sizes, this particular one is real copper made buy Luhr Jensen is called "Main Trail" with a #5 stamped in the blade, but it's not a size 5 blade. I use # 5 blades to build worm harnesses these are a unique shape, this lure has a lot of time as the holes are wore egg shaped from the clevis. There is a lot more but I thought this stuff was worth mentioning. Please give thoughts on the reels. Thanks, PAP.

  15. I my opinion, the advent of the internet has a lot to do with it.

For example, we've all had days when every lure we put down gets hit, other days, nothing gets touched. .. So i go out one sunny Saturday and pound the snot out of the kings on a glow frog spoon. Chances are, if the bite was hot, most any green spoon in the zone would draw strikes, but I ran the frogs.. I post pics here and tell you the glow frogs are hot, a ton of members read my post, Sunday morning, 50 boats are out running glow frogs...... they catch fish, post pics here, and the "hot glow frog saga" continues... By Monday afternoon, the local tackle stores are sold out of glow frog spoons..

Funny thing is, the guys running other spoons, flashers, dodgers, j plugs, and meat rigs caught fish too.......

welcome to " the age of information overload"

Here's a scenario, we were off the northern side of Galloo Isl. found a school of smallies, first we fished off all our live minnows, next all our night crawlers ripped into 3rds. with a 1/4oz jig head, then all our yellow twister tails 2" then just a yellow jig with nothing, all in a hour with the yellow jig still producing when we said enough of this!! Best day of fishing for bass I ever had on the lake. All were released for another day with absolutely no injuries to the fish. So I think right place right time, active fish will hit an just about anything that resembles what they are looking for regardless of color?? Just my 2 cents.

  16. Ya love those cheeks! I call them poor mans scallops. :) Forgot to mention I caught about a 1lb rock bass.

I just can't believe how fat the walleyes are out of that lake, the girth on them is amazing I bet they make for a awesome fighting fish, they have a body kind of like a smallie. I like the cheek meat also, that's what we call the cheeks also (poor mans scallops) we fry them in butter and a pinch of garlic, they are delicious, when we go out to western part of Erie in the spring one night we fry all the cheeks and have cheese and cracker and cheeks with a few beers, life doesn't get any better. Way to go on your catch, with many more to come!!! PAP.

  17. Got lines in at 5...2 drops and 1 miss on first pass...very frustrating...zip second pass...nice 23 barely hooked to start third pass...

    Justin

Sent from my N9500 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Sounds like only 1 fish if JT only made 3 passes, witch isn't bad for the dog days of summer, Late August early Sept. is the walleye transition period for the winter, things should pick up, I've had some of the best walleye catches I ever had in September off Stoney Point towards the cliffs!!! 130ft of water only 40 to 50ft down and some hogs I might add, I like to keep the 24 inch one for the table and release the rest for breeding purposes.
