  1. We're heading up to the lake today for another fishing trip. This is a 'last chance' for these Cannon riggers. One more hiccup and we are getting rid of them for good and switching to Scotty.
  2. Really good thing to check. I just went outside and checked that the spool is running the right way. I thought it might be the case where we have them backwards - I almost wish it was so that there was an "aha" moment and this whole thing would be fixed. But I just checked and they are definitely spooled from the bottom. Thanks for taking the time to reply and help.
  3. We have manual cannon riggers on our bass boat. They've worked well for many years and without problems. However, I would highly recommend staying away from electric Cannons.
  4. We have Cannon Mag 10 STXs giving us a world of trouble since day one. 2 probes and 2 sharks gone the first week of using them. Good bye $1000. We have snubbers which helps, but I hold my breath every time bringing them up and down. And I fish each day with a pit in my stomach hoping there won't be another catastrophe. Maximizing fishing time with my old man is priority #1, losing fishing time because of shoddy gear makes me incensed. Another thing that went wrong is that one of the riggers would deploy down but one day stopped retrieving. Opened up the housing and replaced the board connection that could've gotten wet and damaged. Seems to have worked but time will tell. Another problem is that it looks like the cable has worn against the housing creating little saw tooth gashes in the plastic. Looks to me like they're just waiting to fray, catch, and break the cable. Holding my breath yet again. Yet another problem is that it seems the deploying and retrieving speed is just too fast, and the cable does not wrap tightly and evenly on its spool. If that cable slips and breaks, goodbye probe #3. I'm about ready to just throw in the towel and get another brand of riggers. Peace of mind would be worth it alone. Any tips or advice? Any other rigger brands out there more reliable?

  6. Does anyone use this method for killing and cleaning fish? It's said to be the most humane way to kill a fish and preserves the meat significantly better. Japanese technique that's been done for hundreds of years. Does anyone have a kit they made themselves or know where to buy a kit for this method?
  7. Following up...put out a dipsy rod for the first time and as I was deploying hooked up with a 19 lb king. Wonderful fight. For anyone who might be interested in getting a dipsy rod/reel setup check out these guys. They hooked me up with everything, blood run wire pre spooled, I caught fish immediately. They also offered to upgrade the drag in the Fall by sending it in to the manufacturer. https://capt-chuck.com/ I'm running Chinook divers also. The owner John Sykes is a great guy and stayed on the phone with me for 20 minutes to answer questions (first timer).
  8. One last question and I think that's it! My father has a rod holder that looks like this. It hooks up the rail of the boat. The rails on the boat are welded aluminum, but I have doubts about whether these holders are really the right thing for dipseys. Couldn't the boat just vibrate your screws loose and throw your whole setup into the drink? So I have to ask - do you think these holders would work? Thanks
  9. Dumb question but how do you hand line them in without the line breaking?
  10. Okay so another question. If I am using dispeys basically for the first time am I okay to go with a wire setup? What about braided or copper? What is the difference and what should I be using as a first timer? What type of dispy plate brand do you recommend? Luhr Jensen? Does it matter which size plate? Is there a chart I can use to know how far to set it out? So many variables, so many questions. This stuff is tough. Thank you all again.
  11. Still available by any chance?
  12. https://bloodruntackle.com/stainless-trolling-wire/#product-reviews https://www.okumafishing.com/en/product/coldwater-line-counter.html https://www.fishusa.com/Shimano-Talora-A-Trolling-Rod?quantity=1&IO-Model-Rods=156&gclid=Cj0KCQjwl4v4BRDaARIsAFjATPmu3LVo5o7E5gvAjVNM8zYs1u38OFke_1u6EZ9UNd1ZmuDc6vIBTp8aArTwEALw_wcB Am I on the right track on this stuff? Prefer to buy from a local shop. Checking out Fat Nancy's right now. Thanks
  13. Thank you everyone for the responses. I had a feeling dispeys were the way to go but you all confirmed it. So thanks for that. Now, how do I know which specific gear to use? I know everyone has different preferences and setups, but I'm like a caveman when it comes to this stuff. Okuma reel is a good place to start. What about a pole? Which brand of line? What kind of leader? Which dipsy plate? Too many questions... Is there a resource for all of this?
  14. The old man and I finally pulled the trigger and got a bigger fishing boat. It's a Thunder Jet 18'5 Explorer. https://www.thunderjet.com/boat/185-explorer/ It's not a huge boat but it's got a 96" beam. We've always fished out of a small bass boat with 2 downriggers, just the 2 lines. New boat is already rigged up with Canon Mag 10s. What should we be adding for another line or two? I've heard so much about dipsy divers but never really tried them or seen them in practice. Any help is appreciated. Can't wait to get out on the lake and spend some time with my father. Thanks a lot
  15. Does anyone know if the temperature chart data are collected and are publicly available?
  16. Didn't go out this morning. Too windy Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  17. (GHSP is between Oaks Orchard and Olcott) Woke up at 4:30 and looked out the campsite. Didn't look like the weather was great but we couldn't help giving it a shot. Got out at 5:30. Started 130 fow and worked out to 300. Got a few shakers, two of which I didn't notice and ended up having to keep. Went 5 for 7. One was a screamer 15 lb King 62 ft down in 160 fow. Thought it was 20+ for sure on the line for the fight it gave but wasnt quite that big. Lost a nice steelhead when it jumped and spit the hook. Everything else was shakers. Wind picked up by noon and we had to pack up. Best spoon by far for the past few days has been wonderbread with a silver back. The thermocline was significantly different. Didn't hit the colder water until 90-100 ft down. Few days ago it was more like 40 ft down! Interestingly enough most of the bites today came at the warmer water or on the fringe of the colder stuff!! Fish must be hungry Trying once more tomorrow morning and hopefully the lake isn't too stirred up. Tight lines Pros: -finally getting a screamer and having a sweet fight -decent fishing for the inconsistent weather Cons: -killing 2 shakers -windy later and getting blown off the lake Pic: Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  18. Glad to see everyone contributing info. Will definitely look into some of the lower # tests. We got blown off the water today...too windy. No bites either. Thermocline is significantly deeper than yesterday. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  19. 2 more hits, went 5/7 today with no big ones. MVP was wonderbread spoon with silver backing. Marked all kinds of fish like crazy when we were heading in but the wind was really picking up and not much action. Just 2 misses Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  20. Immature king 325 fow 39' down again. Interesting to see the noon bite Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  21. Understood! I just found switching to 50 lb was a quick fix for today and hasn't detracted from the catch from what I can tell. Glad folks are chiming in with some info. Just landed a 7 lb rainbow 290 fow 39' down. Beautiful fish but not a keeper! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  22. Yes it's on mono. 3 small cohos this morning so far. Good fight in them for little guys! No big guys yet though Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  23. Always nice to see established folks write reports and share insights! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  24. Fishing out of Golden Hill State Park today (between Olcott and the Oak). Lots of fleas on 20 lb test, none on 50 lb! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  25. We'll also be up there starting Thursday morning. Tight lines.
