Most guys don't trespass on purpose while running dogs. I had some coon hunters on my property once. I saw their lights from my house. When I drove up to see what they were doing they had lost one of their dogs and were tracking it's gps collar. They had 3 other dogs with them and they were leashed. It was obvious to me they were not hunting, so I wasn't upset with them. In fact, I had such a problem with coons killing my chickens I gave them permission to shoot every coon they could off my property. Within about a month they had solved my problem and I was glad I ran into them. I'm not saying i'm for trespassing at all, but I think most times it's either by mistake or for good reason. If someone has a dog on the run and has to track down a landowner in the middle of the night, that dog could be half way crossed the county by the time they get back on it's trail. 

Do you have a picture of the color scheme your trying to match with trolling weight lures? I will paint a couple and send them to you. See if you like them. I've been painting lures since 1983 and can paint just about any pattern.

There is a new bait store in the Watkins area. I don't know exactly where it is, but my girlfriend works in the county clerks office and told me a fella filed a DBA to open a bait store. He isn't in town and I don't know the name of the road or hill that he is on, but its off 224, just before you start up the hill. There is a road to the left going up the hill. He is up that road some where, I just don't quite know where. I believe there is a sign at the bottom of the hill. There is also a new bait store on rt 14. The store used to sell "chimineas" and I just noticed a new sign on the building the other day that said "Bait". Not sure what he has, but there the only 2 I know of. 

Very nice! Ive caught several from Susquehanna but never a 50"! Awesome catch. That would make my day.

Can we stay on the topic of lions? I'd hate for this thread to get shut down similarly to the tributary forum bantering.

As an aside to all these claims of black mountain lions, I was going to wait but I guess I'm getting impatient. According to Missouri Department of Conservation, "Throughout its range, no melanistic (that means black) mountain lion has ever been documented by science". So if you hear a claim of people seeing a black lion, they saw either a large black house cat (I had one growing up that weighed over 20 pounds, he was obese though) or they saw a fisher, hell, maybe even a black bear.

Now, in North America there are melanistic jaguars in the Southwest. Central and South America have these cats too. They are not a different species, they are no larger or smaller than a regular colored jaguar. They just have more of the pigment melanin.

I did not want to comment on this subject really, as I hate debating with people. I could compare most debates with walking repeatedly into a brick wall, no progress is made. But, as I am hoping to have a career with one of the natural resource departments, I might as well get some practice informing people with facts rather than "wive's (wise) tales" . I make no claims to be an eUyxpert, a college degree doesn't mean I know what the hell I'm talking about, but I do take pride in the degree I'm working on and may know more than I'll give myself credit for. Contrarily, there's a complete idiot that sits two seats down from me, but rather than facts, he bases everything he says on what he's heard, he lacks the filter between his brain and mouth.....Goodnight.

No, probably not. Not 50 + lbs either. A 48 lb coyote is six ft long. That much I know. I have pics of one that weighs 48 lbs. And its held up against 8" cinder block wall. Its 6ft long from head to tail. That one isn't even 5 ft long. My guess is its in the 30 lb class. Put it on a scale and claim 50 plus if thats what it is.

Once again, " I know its true cause I heard it". Don't feed the nonsense, prove it!

It would be interesting to hear what you know. Personally, the DEC's study into the topic supports the lack of proof into the matter. They have made available a lot of years of research into the subject and thats were I choose to get my info on the topic. I have to laugh when I hear someone say " I know its true because I heard it". I prefer to get to the facts, so it would be interesting to hear what you know.

Trail cameras?

We had a real good 2 1/2 yr old buck on camera one year, twice.

It vanished and we thought someone killed it............I ended up with that very deer, a year later on Thanksgiving Day, now I don't have to look for it anymore..........it's right above the television.

Bet that a cougar might not be caught that often on camera either?Z?

Only a good suspicion..........

It would only take one legitimate camera sighting to start a stir, but there are none.

 

If a trail cam can "out smart" a coyote, i'm sure cougars are no problem for them either. I doubt as though cougars have some special ability to avoid trail cameras. People in other parts of the country don't seem to have any trouble "catching' them on camera. Maybe because they actually have a population of cougars there? I obviously don't dispute the occasional cat passing through, but we do not have any sustainable populations of them in NYS. If we did, they would be on camera somewhere and hunters doing large drives and covering huge amounts of ground would have kicked one up at some point. Plenty of coyotes get flushed out by deer drives, a mtn lion wouldn't be an exception to that. 

I just read the DEC's website regarding mtn lions in NY. They claim that most reported sightings are a case of mistaken identity. Commonly mistaken animals are bobcats, fisher and coyotes. There were 2 reports that were confirmed. One was a 7.5 lb kitten, shot in the Adirondacks (1993) and the hunter thought it was a bobcat. This cats DNA proved it to be a released captive as its genes were from Africa. In 2010, Lake George NY The second, rather interestingly was spotted by DEC Colonel Dave Eggleston's wife, as she was doing dishes. This cat was investigated by Eggleston and Officer Louis Gerrain (a mtn lion skeptic). The pair found tracks in the snow and hair samples from where it had bedded. The samples detemined the cat was from the south Dakota area. It was later hit 6 months later in Milford Conn.

 

The DEC also strongly state that they have never re introduced mtn lions into NY," no matter what you've heard." Quote from DEC. 

 

Steve.e, I don't want to be ignorant here but don't you think if there were that many human sightings of cougars in the area your describing, wouldn't someone have one on a trail cam or some other device? Most people never see a bobcat or fisher all there life, but trail camera's sure seem to be catching them. There were quite a few fisher pics just in this post. I couldn't imagine how many pics exist across NY. If there were mtn lions, we would be seeing pics of them.

As for the roadkill bait, my girlfriend tells me she did that once. (same alarm set up) Fox,skunk, possum were easy shooters, but she said the yotes could hear her walking the floor to get a shot. I would be interested if you find the same thing, if you would keep us posted.

So, we have plenty of fishers on trail cams but I don't here many people say they saw one in the wild.(not nearly as many who claim to see mtn lions) Plenty of people claim to have seen mtn lions, but no trail cam pics of one as of yet. Hmmm... I'm not a detective but it sounds like case closed to me. A few years ago I saw something that could resemble a mtn lion. I could not tell you what it was and could easily say it looked like a mtn lion. My guess is it was a fisher cat. I was aware they were plentiful and known trappers who had caught them, farmers who had sighted them and even had a pair living on my property that I saw occasionally, so I would have to say it was probably a fisher. Another time while logging my property we saw what looked like a mtn lion walking past the corner of the field where we were bucking logs. About 2 wks later I caught a blonde coyote that weighed 48 lbs. Obviously a pack leader because he was very aggressive in the trap and he was a good 10lbs heavier than an average coyote, which weighs between 32-37 lbs. Biggest coyote Iv'e ever caught and was 6ft long from head to tail.

This isn't my biggest, but it weighed 42 lbs. Compare it to me. I weigh 160. It looks a lot bigger than it is. Biggest ive caught was 46 lbs. He was an old male. Teeth were rotting. Im on the phone with the DEC, thumbs up because their coming to document it.

This one is only 16 lbs, from PA. Still looks a lot bigger than it is. Its paw is as big as my akita that weighs 85 lbs. By the way what would you think the average coyote weighs? Any idea?

We do have a good population of Fisher cats. At 3 ft long with a long tail, they could easily be mistaken as a blk Mtn lion. I hear a lot of stories, most of them claim it was a blk lion they saw. Even us experienced outdoorsman see things from time to time that puzzle us. Also, as frogger said, I wouldn't shoot one unless your life depended on it. Federally endangered is serious business, and probably jail time.

First I'd like to say that if so many people claim to have seen one, and the are a lot of claimed sightings, then there would have to be some trail cam pics of them. Second, ive trapped 6 bobcats and shot one in the past couple years. I ran 200 traps on over 4000 acres in Chemung county all year, every year. In fact I caught the first known bobcat 6 yrs ago and it was documented by the DEC. I know of about 50 others who run as many or more traps than I. Our traps are big enough to hold one, and traps do not discriminate. If there is a predator near by he would work the set. None reported yet, and thats people who spend everyday walking miles of trapline, trapping predators. I dont believe we have a population of them, but I would not rule out a stray passing through.

Now that is just awesome! What a talented individual. Iv'e had some nice mounts done, but nothing as impressive as that.
