  1. We use a heavy rubber band to hold the net back. I am strongly against having anything hard mounted to the net, as I once had a nice king pop back out because the basket couldn't expand when we went to pull it out of the water- the net got caught on it. The more hardware you have, the more chance for error.

Netting is all about technique. That net shouldn't touch the water until the fish is calm and ready to net... if he's going nuts, he's not ready to net. I go in at a 45 degree angle, head first, and quickly in a downward motion to go under the fish. I either hold the excess net with my finger, or use a medium sized rubber band.

    X2.
I never put net in the water early. Always wait for that right moment then quickly dart it under the fish, and of course ALWAYS head first.

  2. Wouldn't fish with out mine. Most guys would rather go with out a fish finder on the lake then without their fish hawk. Including me.

I got mine five years ago and my hookup rate increased on day one. Though if u only fish a few times a year might be cheaper options out there.

I bought an old 840 fish hawk for cheap and bought the 4x probe which works wt the 840 display and transducer. Save u about 300 or so.

    X2 on this

And auto pilot is wonderful, but a fish hawk is a necessity. You will not look back

  3. Run the coppers off of boards. You'll have a mess the other way.

This one I can answer emphatically from experience. Tileman Dan is absolutely correct. I ended up with wire dipsy, copper, and leadcore all in a ball on my deck. Learning experience to say the least.

Stayed away from copper ever since. To stay with this thread, can anyone give some basic tips on how to launch a copper line on a board when dipsy is out in order to avoid a mess?

  4. New Fishfinder Advice

I realize that this topic is one that gets repeated often, but with everything getting outdated I thought I would try again.  I am in the market for new fishfinder.  I am a rookie when it comes to electronics.  I don't know much but I know that my current one is from 1992.   I would like GPS and great fish finding abilities.   Finding bait would be huge as my current one does not.

Next year I am getting a new autopilot but not sure if that even matters to this conversation.

Would like to stay under $1000

Thanks for all of your help in advance

  5. Welcome to Lake O. Fleas can be tough this time of yr so using heavier line will help. Sounds like you will be just fine. Spoons will work but variety sometimes is the key. It seems that flasher flies off dispeys are working this yr so if you could stop and grab a cpl flies that would be helpful. Also do yourself a favor, grab a pretied meat rig or 2 and some herring strips at bait store and put it down in cold water and hang on.
I am nowhere near a pro compared to the rest of these guys so I am sure there will be a lot of other good advice. Good luck and post pics of your Dad's king!

  6. cowbell storage

Trying to fend off cabin fever by organizing my stuff again.  Cannot find a way to keep my cowbells stored other than just roll them up and throw them in a plastic box..  Anyone have any neat ideas or pics of how they do it?
