  1. This is good news! My buddy Joe and I are going to be heading out for a venture late Tuesday morning to do afternoon fishing and give it a shot.. We will go in the morning if it doesn't rain/thunderstorm in the morning . Plan on launching from Stony since I'm sure we can not fit under the under cut in Henderson still. I stopped Wednesday on way back from Syracuse and seen the state launch was still high in Henderson. I will post our findings after. This is the first year with a brand new eTech 9.9hp 4 stroke and the brand new Fish hawk X4D plus! This should make for better results hopefully!

The older Mag 10's did not have auto stop... the circuit boards are a bit different  with an additional connector on the autostop version. A lot of folks complain about the slowness of the mag 10's but I view it as a positive mainly because I use the time to re-rig stuff and I adjust the clutch to slip slightly if the weight comes out of the water and rests on the terminal end of the downrigger and I hear it and shut off. Neever have ahad a problem with this method.. We Americans are a very impatient breed and everything has to be immediate and fast which sometimes leads to other problems:lol: Take a look at the complaints about some of the high speed downriggers...lost weights, cable jerking etc.

I agree with you here on this! I do the same thing. I take the time to re-rig my tackle while the rigger is still coming up. I have the older mag 10's and they work just fine for me especially if you do the maintenance and keep them well greased so they work smooth! I have one with auto-stop and an older one without the circuit board. The one without the auto-stop I have plenty of time to keep an eye on it as it nears the top and I just shot it off before it reaches the boom. My other riggers are all manual cannons.

  3. Wasn't a bad day of fishing today! We launched fairly early outvStony creek public launch. The water is still high but still doable with high boots. Took us a while figuring things out but once we got things figured out we landed our first walleye of the day around 8am. Then finally the second not until after noon. After landing that one we managed to get all the lines tangled up and took half hour getting everything untangled and didn't loose any lures. After getting all the lines back out we landed a3rd walleye but smaller. But this time it was later inthe afternoon and the bite seemed to have stopped do of to the finger we went to try for Lakers. We ended the day with 3 Lakers and put 2 of them back because they were small and let them grow bigger.
All in all a good day!!

  4. I guess I'm in the same boat as Todd. Going to Guffin Bay this week to try something other than 18" Oneida Lake cigars.
Never been there, so I'm not sure what I can run into at this time of year. I was told the fish may be a lot heavier than Oneida.
My on hand rods for trolling are:
9' Ugly sticks (light to 20lb) paired with Penn 320's with 17lb mono and a 6 foot 12lb leader.
    6'6" St Croix's (med/hvy to 20lb) paired with Garcia 5600's with 14lb mono and a 4 foot 10lb leader.
I have two walleye boards and some off shore tadpole weights, 1 1/4oz each.

    Just wondering.

His luck out there this week Baitbucket! Guffins bay is right out in front of my house. There are some good fishing out in the bay and some nice muskies also if you know where and when to fish them. I like to walk out during the winter and ice fish when the ice is safe but it hasn't been good for that in couple of years in Guffins.

  5. Recommendations for a launch near Henderson or Chaumont

My buddy and I are planning a trip finally this coming Saturday and need a good place to launch his 25ft sport-craft. He just had a new mercury e Tech 9.9 kicker motor installed and bought a new Fiskhawk x4D with bluetooth that I will be putting on his boat for him by this weekend. How are the water levels at Henderson State launch. I hear that hip boots may be needed to launch from there. Has anyone with a larger boat like the sportcraft launched from there recently? I will check out the Chaumont state launch on my way home.

Any recommendations to launch a big boat this size safely? We want to try and target the browns if they are still biting and walleye and possibly some Atlantic if they are a possibility. Heck anything that will bite.

    Thanks

    Bob

  6. Todd is correct there are Johsons shoal out in the bay and you need to know where it is or you will hit! Jigging for walleye off the deep end of it can be productive though where it drops off to over 25ft quickly. I personally have had better luck out farther past Pillar Point between Reeds bay and Everleigh point trolling with spoons for the eyes.

  7. Looking for older cannon mag 10 motor housing

I am in need of a working motor/gearbox housing for an older pre 2006 cannon mag 10. I am hoping to find one fairly reasonable to put in my spare downrigger. A new one costs around $199 from most of the places I have seen and I can buy a fully functional used whole down rigger for that or a little bit more in price. Any help or suggestions of where to find one? Maybe a motor gearbox housing from a vehicle wiper motor will work???

    Thanks,

  8. I used Mothers VLR vinyl, leather, and rubber cleaner, works great. Took off that black colored stuff right off my canopy plus is adds to the softness and it makes the top more weather resistant and block UV rays that cause more damage to your top. My top is 35 years old. But it's time for a new one, my aft curtain I can't put on unless it's sunny so it stretches, so need a new one of those. This year I'll have one put on buy someone up there. Around here they want you to remortgage your home for petes sake!!

    Pap,
If you need canvas work done up here this summer Paul Norton in Chaumont does great work and pretty reasonable also! I think he even comes to where ever your boat is to do the work. I have his number if you need it. I am going to have him do some work on my boat canvas real soon also.

  9. Any preferences in which system or systems are the best or cheapest deal but still get a good system? The fish hawk X4 runs around $650+ depending on were you but it. The Depth raider Drx-10 system is only $450 on ebay. Then there are the older subtroll systems. My buddy Joe that's not on this forum wants to add one to his boat but not sure what to get. If he can get a decent used system for around $250_300 he is game or may be willing to pay the $450 for a new depth raider system if it's worth the money.

Any input on this from the guys that use these would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Bob
