I've got the triples. They work well. If I could change one thing it would be to change the angle so the rod tubes were more vertical.  In a smaller boat contact with the planer board line can be an issue.

I have seen that a few times with the doubles as well, basically the line for the boards can get behind a guide and try to pull the rod out.  I rotate the rod and be mindful during turns, crazy Ivans etc

  2. Double crush spin doctor and hammer, crinkle green or stud / glow stud flies. (all made by a-tom-mik) Depending on conditions switch spin doc to silver...The gator spin doc was great for me last summer.  I have spring fever BAD....

Some people don't have a clue!! makes you wonder how they've made it this long on the up side of dirt!!

I had a similar experience noonish Sunday out front Olcoot around 400 FOW.  2 guys in a red Lund fishing w/ no boards just 2 poles on riggers.  I was headed back south where it was less bumpy and he north slightly off my port side.  We were quite a ways off from each other so I angled to starboard inside of him and he turned pretty sharply inside of my track so I angled back to port.... then he also started to angle back and missed my boards by maybe 50ft....  I ran a big loop.to get back on track and this same boat is now heading south same as me off my starboard side slowly drifting toward me forcing me to head SE.... There was nobody for miles and this ... "other person" not going to say boater... not worthy of the term boater basically harassed us for an hour.  I have had close calls in traffic but to have a boat shadow me like that... not sure the guy's issue heck even if he felt I was in the wrong to get so close to my boards in open water is just plain irresponsible.

  4. Maybe a bit extreme for Lake O but on west coast the seasons for wild salmon and stocked salmon differ so you are required to use barbless hooks, they do much less damage when removing hooks that end up in top of mouth.  I can say without doubt even the bigger fish I catch out of Puget Sound / Pacific have much better survival rate.  That said surface and down temp difference not nearly as big as Lake O.

Something probably worth mentioning is that what you do when retrieving and boating the fish plays a huge role in whether or not they make it afterward. If catch and release is intended it helps to get the fish in as soon as possible, don't bring them into the boat release them in the net if possible by using needle nose pliers to take the hook out not physically handling the fish. Try not to have the fish lie on a hot boat floor while retrieving the hook. Don't hold the fish vertically and avoid placing fingers or hands near or in the gills area keep the fish horizontal and supported underneath whenever possible. Many techniques are used to "revive" them at the side of the boat and to plunge them back toward the bottom but it is unknown what their actual fate really is with any of these methods.I believe that lactic acid builds up in the kings when they are fighting all the way in and you have to wonder if this dooms them as well when released. Also I have seen fish that were "belly up"  actually swim away afterward but who knows their actual fate long term. Kinda like the bass guys releasing fish near the launch after weigh in

I release most fish as well and agree totally about minimal handling.  Shakers almost always good and sub 10 lbs usually head right down as well so the fight plays a part as well.  It is not the funnest way to catch nor is it possible with the big ones but in my experience the fish that get horsed in quick stand a much better chance.

I have also noted fish that come up from the deeper water have to equalize swim bladder before they can descend and have seen many belly floaters kick there way down eventually.

    olcott...Sunday morning

Left launch at 6:30 am...was gonna get a look  at the wave heights from the road and didn't see any white caps so took a chance and glad we did..bumpy ride out though but made it to 450 ft and set up...kept it simple..2 riggers...one parked at 90 with two face sd with ss stud fly..other froggie glow dw parked at 75...2 wire dipsey both with white double crush sd paddles and white glow atomic Flys. ...into cluster of shakers right away...lowered both to 105 and quickly caught a teen...our best depth was 475 feet dead north of Olcott...didn't realize that we were  almost in Canadian water...looked at GPS and wow ..we were at the fence..we never got to 500 ft because we were too far west..needed to go southeast to find 500...circled back to marks we caught fish earlier and bam ...into a nice mix of steelhead and kings...all at 475 ft..3 steelhead....7 salmon...all  on spin doctors and flys....not a single spoon bite...Largest was 15 lbs. ..Super fat but most didn't put up much of a fight...normally not the case...I usually don't get a lot of chances on the rod unless my guest aren't paying attention but was making a rigger  adjustment and when I started lowering the rigger it fired...screaming drag and I'm thinking...sweet...wrong...25 lb test was looped around itself on the spool and I was able to loosen the first knot....then the fish decided to make a run...looked down at the spool and there it was again....looped...felt the rod almost rip out of my hands and could only hang on as the line went limp and there goes the sd & fly toronto bound....you know the feeling....lesson learned from this...you can spend time installing new drags on all your gear but that's useless if you leave 25 lb mono on your reels for 3 years.....never gave the drag a chance to perform....other than that the two guys that went with me did a great job on the rods & net and lake ontario gave us a great day...

Snapped brand new 20lb flouro leader saturday when I left drag too tight off the boards, rod doubled over just got my hand on the reel and it snapped.  Considering the flea issues how do you get away with 25LBS test?

Just curious Decoy Hound, how big is the boat that you are fishing from. Alot of talk this year about fishing over 500 feet of water. I'm only fishing from an 18 footer and concerned about the run. Thanks

I was out deep yesterday in my 19 footer with no issues, fished between 400 and 500 FOW and it was well worth the run out  Used to make runs out that deep in an old 16ft Sylvan Sea Monster on nice days as well.

  8. gator spin doc with crinkle green atomik fly has hands down been killing it for me this year and not to sound like a broken record but but double crush with glow stud fly

Decently productive spoons this year are SS drunken waddler as well as Michigan NBK stingray usually paired with mountain dew spin docs

Afternoon can be very good especially when during full moon cycles.

The last couple hours of daylight can be some of the best and most productive fishing.

On the west side of the lake (Olcott) since late june I have seen no advantage to getting up and on the lake by dawn.  Find the right down temp and the bait and its on.

bout time - That is a great bit of info for me as fishing for salmon on the west coast/washington state during a full moon is worst time no matter what time of day.  I have followed the same assumption here in NY but I have 0 evidence to back it up, just assumed....  Thank You for the tip!

So, the question is, what are they?  They look like a common house fly, right?  Stable fly,

    greenhead, snipe fly?

From what I can tell and others have mentioned is the majority of the troubles come from the Stable fly.  I have seen plenty of deer and some MONSTER horse flies on the lake but they are easy to deal with.  Stable flies are the ones that swarm your ankles and harass your dog... look like a small house fly.  Their bites hurt but dont have much of a lasting effect for most far as I know.   I say far as I know because I am allergic to them, have to wear pants with thick socks on the lake.

  11. Shortly after last post I lost a steelhead at first jump then wife called... up with the riggers, in with the board and I went from solo to wife and 2 kids.  Back an hour or so later and into a double almost immediately back in front of red barn 320fow. Marking bait off and on 80 to 120, thermal varied but mostly around 90FOW.  Stepson's first salmon (almost) was in the 20lb range lost at the back of the boat although I was able to land the other fat steelhead.  2 for 6 on the day.

  12. Just to add my 2 cents have not had any issue using 27lb lead core or 40lb Big Game mono clear with 17 to 20 lb flouro leader.  To remove what does build up on mono grab and release a taught line like strumming a guitar sort of and they will go flying.  Try not to let them mass at the eye of your rod like a cotton ball it will trash ur mono, good to have a buddy on the boat to avoid that.

Coming over next weekend and only have 2 riggers on our boat. Anyone fish with stack clips to get additional rigger rods in the water? I've tried free sliders before without success. Any advice is appreciated!

Used to use but can be a pain.   I know kings are "supposed" to run deep after getting hooked but in my experience if the fish takes the bottom line at the ball 30% of the time I am landing the fish and the tangled line from the other stacked rod.  I prefer boards with leadcore or copper

  14. Olcott Friday Night 7-22-18

Had to cancel Saturday so I bugged out of work early and fished tonight.  Started in 120 FOW marking bait between 30 to 60 FOW the whole evening, nothing on leadcore board except lots of sea weed / grass in water.   1 for 4 with the one being my best of the year.  Same trashed 10 plus year old silver gator spin dr and a crinkle green atomik fly that has is literally half gone, strands lost all over my boat from prior success.
