    Hello all...

I used to be on this board quite a few years ago. I fished out of Hughs Marina as often as I could with the Willy Fish. Due to moving out of the area my son being born and a divorce I lost one of the great passions in my life. My (new) wife and I are interested in getting back into trolling starting a new hobby. Our goal is to save some $ and keep an eye out for a turn key. a large enough boat we could sleep on to start and eventually purchase a camper. I loved the people and atmosphere at Hughs Marina. The fishing , dish to pass nights and camp fires. Great people and I'm dying to get back into it. Nothing greater than getting up predawn and setting up for a day of trolling. We are just starting to plan our venture and hope to be on the lake for next season. All lot of work and learning to be had. I thought this board would be a great start.

Fish eaze I did something very similar, was off the lake for 5 or 6 years, got married and I am back, having fun out there.  Maybe post a wanted add in classifieds on this site with best case boat and and price range... Best of luck

  2. lt119 I feel your pain, about 8 years ago on a buddy's boat I was netting a 10 plus pound walleye for him and the treble caught the edge of the net.  Before I could get the net backed into the boat it flopped over the edge of net and my buddies walleye was lost, been taking guff for it ever since.  Yesterday the same buddy was netting a nice steelhead on my boat, was a great fight etc.  Had fish on its side gliding in nice, my buddy caught the treble on outside edge of the net and before I could reach its gills the fish was gone so my buddy and I are finally even lol.  Random BS happens when fishing.

  3. Olcot July 4th

    Happy 4th of july!  20170704_121056.thumb.jpg.9f94ba9c1185d8bf7a8fd9190e64ba87.jpg19601260_1615377795139475_2389339210242281134_n.thumb.jpg.457a60788a009aa4816ae8ab758b27e1.jpg

Started east of Olcott in 160 FOW slowly trolled towards the boats west of break wall.  Started catching once we hit about 130 FOW just west of the knot of boats.  Similar to yesterday if we marked bait we were catching fish.  5 for 8 with a few empty releases peppered in.  Down temps varied quite a bit.  Lost a beautiful steelhead as my buddy bonked it in the head with the net got the lure caught and that is all she wrote.  All 5 that we boated were kings and came on riggers with NBK spoon and green flies.

Awesome job, I was beginning to think this might be a wash this year, doesn't appear to be dragging on the bottom with that irregular paint line at the top. More like a piece that saw a lot of time in the water and tackle box, either way it does the job. Those are some stout fish for this time of the year. Nice job CAB99

Thanks PAP performed great again today, and yes it was in use from about 2005/6 ish to 2010 then it took a 6 year vacation in the tackle box and is now back for more.

  5. olcott Morning Bite 7-2

fished east and in front of olcott anywhere between 120 and 240 FOW  spread down 50 to 100 FOW almost everytime we marked bait we were catching fish.  Most popular was atomic green glow fly with a green spin doctor from days of old.  2nd was glow frog on lead core off boards.

5 for 8 including a lost monster thx to hardware issue with brand new okuma magda 45.... if you let go of reel it spins in reverse under heavy load.  Going to stick to my penns whenever I can

  7. Fishing With Dad

My middle son was graduating and my Mother and Father were traveling here from Seattle to attend graduation ceremony and party.  My dad is a great guy, a long time boat owner and was an avid fisherman back in the day.  Me being without a boat for 5 years I picked one up this spring.  This was sort of a special trip for my dad as it was the 1st time he has traveled here since having a stroke in July 2016.  Post stroke he is a bit more child like, has short term memory loss, problem solving issues and poor impulse control.  In addition he now walks with a cane and has various left side deficits.

A few months back while talking on the phone he explained to me that I may have to help him reel in any fish when we go out as he is not sure if he can hold a pole with his left hand.  Unfortunately my boat being a 19 footer I had to tell him that I can't take him fishing which clearly upset him.  A few days later it hit me that I should find out if a charter can help.  I found a charter that was able to accommodate for his mobility issues as well as provide a fishing chair with a gimbal mount to help hold the rod.  So 6AM Monday morning we boarded Reel Excitement with Captain Bob Songin.  We had an awesome view with many waterspouts to the north and Captain Bob was able to put us on the fish.  My dad was able to see his first waterspout in person as well as catch his first lake trout ever.

Huge Thank You to Bob Songin for a very special fishing trip!

  8. I say try it and if it works please post it to this site.  I spent 15 or so years with plexiglass hand crank riggers made by my father, 6 of those years on Ontario.  Have cannon mag 10s now..... IMOP rigging for dipsy (snubber, swivels etc) is similar in effort/time than cranking a rigger but to be clear I have never tried combining them.  Attaching a dipsy diver to a downrigger release, even a chamberlain seems to me to be problematic.  I have however heard of people using leadcore, copper etc with dipsy.  There is something to be said for hand cranked riggers as they dont come up or down too fast and you never have to depend on a sensor and or clutch setting.

My opinion is use the riggers as part of a spread (lots of folks using the word program) in concert with dipsy divers and or weighted lines etc.  Best of luck

  9. that reaction is no joke especially to those flys because they typically dont cause any reaction beyond the initial hurt.  I have a similar alergy to a deer fly like bug.  it looks like a deer fly on growth hormone big and black and mean last time I got bit on my toe my whole foot swelled up to the point where I couldnt walk and it got red half way up my lower leg.  i ended up with a patch of sking dying at the bite.  good luck with the bugg spray mine just arrived today this will be my first time trying it last year my brother was convinced he just needed more off so he kept spraying and they were all over him and leaving me mostly alone.  this year he has learned his lesson

Ouch, people have similar reactions to brown recluse spider bites, sounds terrible. Let me know how spray works.

I agree about taking serious, my wife's a nurse she would lose her mind if I didn't. I will master bite prevention best I can because in my opinion itching constantly is up there with real pain

Thermacell works great on stable flies and the harmless, yet annoying, midges.

My boat is open bow, maybe put it under my console but it seems like the flies know to bite when I am catching or rigging.  After all this itching it is long pants for me no matter the temp

The only product that I have found that works against these things is Buggspray. You can find it on eBay and amazon. Be sure to order the biting fly formula. I have used it for several years

Thank You, just ordered a bottle.... still going to wear long pants.  It is really odd, when I was fishing on Lake Ontario 6 years ago I dont recall having too much of an issue, certainly not the allergy.... the allergy is a game changer and not for the better, I am miserable.

  12. Stable Fly Bites

I am allergic to them.... 50% will actually blister then pop and they itch a lot.  Benadryl cream, pills and cortisone cream are only way I can function and this goes on for 3 to 5 days after bites.  I will be wearing thick socks and pants from here on out.  My wife is worried that my allergy could result in anaphylaxis when I am out on the lake.  Stashing a bottle of benadryl in boat at her suggestion just wondering has anyone else had this reaction?  If so how do you treat?

I guess, on another note, should I be considering planers or just worrying about the downriggers, for now? I may have a buddy fishing with me and two downriggers, possibly stacked with 4 rods. Maybe just flatline for now?

I run regular planer boards, they are a must early on Ontario or if you get out in Erie for Walleye.  I made my boards with plans from this site.  If I had to do over (this winter) I will make a pair with 1x8 instead of 1x6 boards. You need a miter saw, drill, couple of paint brushes and some patience as it takes many coats of paint.  Inline boards are not so great IMOP.   Basically with a good bow mounted mast, 2 good boards you can run 4, possibly 6 more dipsy, wire or leadcore lines.  I made pretty close to the plans in the image but cut compound at 40 (saw only goes to 45) and I will go with 30 degree on my next boards per word doc instructions.

  14. Olcott Saturday Evening

Had the wife, daughter and dog out from 4 to 8.  Started just west of Olcott in 300 FOW marking fish in top 50 FOW.  Didnt even have all the poles in the water and I lost a decent but foul tail hooked laker right behind the boat.  Daughter took a 6 lb king on drunken waddler and I landed another 6 ish pound king on NBK.  2 for 3 plus a shaker all on spoons.  Nothing on flies.  Speaking of flies, my poor dog was victimized by biting flies.
