I've decided to take the day off from work Friday and make the 3hr trek to the lake. I have never fished the lake for salmon before apart from fishing the mouth of the Salmon river during the run. So the question is how do I get started? I have an 18' tracker with  2 manual riggers, I set up 2 rods with wire for divers and my buddy is bringing a copper setup. I have flasher flies, meat rigs and spoons. I do not have a fish hawk so Im guessing for temp. I can fish out of Mexico or Oswego but I really have no idea what to do after the boats in the water. Do you guys normally head out to a particular depth and set up or do you kinda cruise around looking for marks and then send out the gear? Also what would you send out for a

I have the exact set up as you. Im out of rochester so im not sure depths, but here I start in 110, drop the riggers to 65 and 70 with spoons or FF and start NE toward deeper water looking for marks or bait. Fish the marks. Once riggers set i put dipseys back 175 and 220 and i use meat rigs every day without exception...they are my best producers. 10 color and copper out next. Both have glow spoons. I don't slam them like the pros out in 300 feet, but I do well enough to be busy.

  2. 110 feet bait everywhere.  Marks at 30, 50 and 80 feet. Water was 49 at 75. Trolled east at 630 and by 700 had a double. Lost one at the boat and landed the other. 20 pounder meets the feezer, same size swam away. Both on Meat rigs back 220.

Then the 300 copper with green jeans goes nuts 10 minutes later.  I've got 2 rods on the deck, a fish bleeding all over the place and a screaming 300 copper. Landed her, 22 pounds..released.

20 minutes later My son hooks into the biggest lake trout I've see in my life and we lose it at the boat. That thing was a freakin tank.

Turn around to head west, meat rig takes off and landed a steelhead...the one i posted with the gill lice.

Now its 915 and we head home...I'm beat...one hell of a morning.

Hard to say. You can’t catch what isn’t there?
For what it’s worth though my go to for early morning or evening if I can find temp is 100 to 150. Especially as we get further into the summer don’t give up on that water.

I do ok out here anywhere from 150 out to 200 looking for 49F. I dont have the days you guys have west of here when fishing the same temp/depth. Makes me think the water here just isnt as fish friendly. I'm gonna have to take the drive out there one of these days and see for myself.

  4. So if they are concentrated at a particular depth in one area,  would it be the same in similar spots? Like if you are smashing them at 130 off Braddocks, would it be similar for me out of Bear Creek? Is there something other than temp they key in on? From what I've been reading, seems west of Rochester is better than out in wayne county...or have I just not figured them out yet?

I had no luck with 300 copper. I had all kinds on it and nothin. Green meet rigs, green FF, NBK spoon on dipsy and triggers. One magnificent rainbow took a koho killer down 30...wrapped itself on rigger cable...now time to by a new spoon. A great morning full of action.
