Launched at the Genny under a starlit sky. Headed W & set up in front of the ponds in 25 FOW. Very slight South wind.

Cold water had moved out so headed out. On the way out ran into this chubby guy on the bottom in 60 FOW w/ a Wonderbr’d NK 28.

Lot of bait from 50-70 then again 120-140 FOW but mostly on the bottom. (really curious if they’re gobies)

Ran into these two little guys around 200FOW on silvr Mags w/yellow Ladr’s, 50 Ft down.

Bow (RHS) had 3 lamprey scars on it. Lots of fleas from 60 to bottom at 180FOW & out.

Beautiful day on the water. 1st day I didn’t attract ragboats. Off at 11:30.

The King stocking program was hit big time last year. There weren't enough eggs harvested and then the eye-up problem hit. DEC has already said it's cutting the salmon stocking quotas for just about everywhere except the S.R. in hopes of protecting the "brood stock." [state of the Lake meetings - Mar '08]

We've had a fairly wet year, however the lake is still pretty high. Let's hope a tropical storm (not like Agnes though) makes it up here & gives us some decent rain & high outflow towards the begining of Oct so the spawning run (stocked & nat repo) is more sucessful than last year.

Launched before dawn at the Genny. Fog along shore early but burned off around 9:30. Initially worked 40-70FOW out front. Bait was there. Temp definitely warmer as you went out. Very cold shallow.

Wondering if these things are blankets of goby’s??? Only saw a few pods up in the water column. Quite a few boats around the mouth early, then they went out.

Moved down to Russell in 70 FOW then worked towards shore. Birds in 35 FOW again. (Divers & gulls)

I buzzed them for a better shot cuz they obviously didn’t know where the fish were either.

Did manage a tiny rainbow in 30 FOW, 10 down, NK clean frog. (Looked like somebody had snagged him)

Worked back to River, zig-zagging 30-55FOW, then pulled out around 11:00.

Apparently they teach this in sailing school. This guy must’a got an “Aâ€

I second "keep it simple".

I'd like to see it attract the little guy. (like me) I don't know how it fits into anyone's schedule but I'd like to see it before Memorial Day when the ragboats & others start hitting the river or the Genny launch. I'd suggest something like this:

Date: Some Saturday Early-Mid May, Weather date, following Saturday

Honor System, legally caught whole fish

Soloists allowed

Fee: $25 donation to Genny pen project per person (not per boat)

Targets: Atlantic, Brown, Chinook, Coho, Laker, Rainbow/Steelhead

Min weights: Trout & Coho – 6 Lbs; Chinook – 12 Lbs

Prizes:

Heaviest fish entered – Trophy + 15% of gate + picture of winner getting a smootch from YT’s brother’s girlfriend on the left hand side of this site. (or YT if winner is female, provided he's had his rabies shot)

Ray - shhh..don't give them any ideas. They just blew their savings on a study for the Renassance Square ($20 mil). In case you didn't know, that is a restoration project downtown that includes a fancy bus station. (again, for people to leave the city) Glad we don't have to pay other cities to provide "docking" for our busses.

Rochester could be a world class fishery town. Dick Schlyer was a County employee when he started the ESLO Derby, which was the father of all the Big-O derbies. I fished the ’79 Deby off the Genny, waited over 1 1/2 hours to launch & counted 350 boats within 2 miles of the mouth.

For a long time, the Rochester politicians & newspapers have not wanted anything to do with developing the fishery. As far as the river goes, Rochester politicians are much more interested in appeasing self interest groups. What’d they blow on the fast “fairyâ€

FP - It's always great to be on the water. Catching fish is a bonus. There's just something scary/discusting about looking shoreward and seeing this coming at you, especially after the committee boat dropped the marker about 150 yds off my starboard stern.

There were about 3 more than I was ready to take on....

Finally made it out this morning. Launched at the Genny 5:30. S-SE wind maybe 1ft’rs. Somewhat cloudy towards the NE horizon. Otherwise just a few High clouds.

Did a little searching & found a lot of bait 45 -60 FOW, so played a hunch.

Only took 1 pic of bait but it was all over water column & a lot of it. Pods every couple of minutes. Closer to surface as you went shallower.

Water temp 72F on surface, 44-45F down 35 over 50 FOW. Kind of interesting as same depth over 75FOW was 61-63F. Looked like a wall of warm water pinned the bait in close. Birds had the same idea. Must have been 100-150 of them or so in that 45-50 FOW range. More birds than in a McDonald's parking lot.

Anyways, 2 small kings, maybe 5-6 Lbs on doctored 28 Mongoose in that 45 deg water half way to Russell. Rigg’rs, 50 ft back.

Ran into a lot of water & air pollution around 9:00. You’d think they’d post the race time/course somewhere where fishermen could see it. Oh well, they own the lake :roll:

So headed East & the big guy was back.

Beautiful morning on the water. Cooked by 11:00 so pulled out.

If you're using the one with the wire: hook cable to one end, ball on the other.

or

You can remove the wire and feed your uncoated cable through the holes. Then attach your ball. Put a crimp between the legs to "nail" it in position. (I like about 1" above the clip for the ball.)

or

If your'e using it on a coated line, drill out the holes a little larger then use a piece of tubing as insulation to keep it from wearing the coating off the cable. Again (but carefully) us an eletrical terminal connector to "nail" it in place. (There's a picture someplace way back there)

or

If you're using it as a stacker, thread your cable through it and use a toothpick or a small trottline clip to hold it in place.

The wire that holds your line should release upward. You can make a loop then twist your line about 4 times and put the loop in the clip or you can half-hitch a rubber band to you line and put the free loop in the release clip. Be careful if you use light line with the twisted loop. Some light mono lines "stretch & warp" after about 1 1/2 hrs or so.

NOAA near-shore says Rochester temp is 55. This is approx 35 FOW west of the Genny.

Gear on bottom of distributor may have lost a tooth & the timing is way out of whack? I'd remove distributor cap then crank the engine to make sure distributor turns first then pull the distributor & check out that cheap nylon gear. (Check manual first before pulling distributor. As I remember one of the cylinders has to be in a certain stroke & the rotor has to point someplace when you reassemble it.)

Billy V – Yes it is a forecast. (as I stated & the map is dated 8/4) However you can see on the 6:00AM nowcast that you posted, there is a cooler water surface plume forming in that area and moving southward. (run the nowcast backwards i.e. 00, -03, -06, etc) Unfortunately, cold water shouldn’t hit the surface till we’re all back at work- Mond, Tues, Wed. :evil: Keep your fingers crossed by next weekend that we’ll have some cooler water on our shore.

Ray – Don’t worry, I know you funning. Here’s the bathymetry of the area. Interesting structure to the S/SE/SW of it. It's very hard to find on the typical NOAA navigation charts. It's also interesting to see what the guys reporting on "attheoak" are fishing over when they're out at the 28, 29, 30 lines.

Welcome Phil. I've seen a few Kayak'rs in the Genny & on I-Bay. It appears to be a growing sport. Last year someone set up a removable Kayak course on the Genny, up by Driving park bridge. I'm sure you'll find clubs at school. By the way which one?

The cold water has been pushed against the northern shore, Coburg, Pt Hope & west areas (greens& yellows)with the entire south shore having warm water (oranges, reds). This map is predicting some cold water “springing upâ€

My release above probe:

1. My probe rigger on a swivel base. I swivel it forward to load line into release. Lower a little then swivel aft, then lower all the way down. When swiveling aft, the probe may spin a couple times. (depends on waves & how much of a hurry I'm in) Anyways it can catch the down line of my rod and wrap it around the cable.

2. I keep my weight in the water all the time. Keeps it from swinging - banging hull, stressing cable, stressing mount. Therefore a little less reach overboard to load the release. (beneficial to solists)

3. A little less drag on the lead to the weight which may or may not help keep the probe horizontal, down deep.
