  1. Chowder,

I wouldnt replace both bateries unless you have to. Most auto parts stores have battery testers to check the condition of your batteries and Id recommend it before replacing them. I seem to be on a 2-3 year replacement cycle with batteries and I always make sure to put the fresh battery in as the starting battery.

  2. On Thursday the DEC will be delivering the fish to our site. The schedule calls for the DEC to do a direct stocking of steelhead at 12:30pm at the Sandy Creek public boat launch. After the direct stocking the DEC truck will drive over to the Sandy Creek marina and fill our pens. Usually we need 3 or 4 volunteers to help the DEC truck with their pipes and tank equipment. The response has been fantastic and we at least 5 people scheduled so far. It is a fun process to watch so all are welcome to attend.

Thursday evening between 4:30 and 5:00pm the Boy Scouts will be onsite to move the pens from the marina to the main creek channel. The scouts are a big asset as they use their canoes to guide the pens through the marina waterway to the creek.

After this we will start our feeding schedules. Feedings will be at 8:00am, 10:00am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm, 4:00pm, and 6:00pm. SUNY Brockport College usually does the 10:00am feedings and they help us with pen maintenance. Instructions for feeding the procedures and observation tasks are posted near the pens.

So far Thursday April 2nd our feeding schedules are full, Friday the available slots are 4:00pm and 6:00pm and the rest of the days are totally open. If you have a time in mind to feed the fish anyone can email me at anytime and your designated times to the lists.

We had a great group of volunteers at the Marina this morning as we moved the pens from their storage area to the marina. This afternoon (Sunday 2:00pm)the Boy Scouts will be assembling the pens. We will also be moving the floating dock out of the marina waterway into the Sandy Creek Channel. We will be securing the dock on its moorings and will have to install a set of stairs for the steps. So there are plenty of volunteer opportunities this afternoon.

I will start circulating feeding schedules this evening.

    Thank you to everyone involved

  3. With the weather as good as its ever been in March, I was ahead of schedule on getting the boat ready for the season. On friday (with help from Scott from Silverfox), we launched the boat, took a quick cruise out of the creek, and tied her off to her summer home. This morning I was itching to get the boat out on the water make sure everything was working (and of course get a few lines wet too). We were only out for an hour or so but we did pull our first fish of the year, a brownie, from the plume out in front of the creek. With the lack of rain, the shallows lacked color and were pretty clear for the most part. Saw 4 boats out in the lake along with a couple fishing in the creek. Im hoping to get on the water next weekend and troll the shallows a little bit more. Let the fishing season begin!

  4. Recieved this email last night from the Sandy Creek pen rearing coordinator Bob Holden.

The DEC is ahead of schedule and wants us to recieve our fish early so it changes our schedule completely.

    Volunteers needed:

If you can volunteer for one of these activities please respond to this

email or give me a call on my cell phone (585)507-0303

We will need a few volunteers this Sunday at 2:00pm March 29th to help the

    Boyscouts assemble the pens.

Thursday April 2nd at 12:30pm we will need at least 3 volunteers to meet the

DEC stocking truck at the public boat launch for assistance in the direct

stock and then for assistance at the marina in the stocking of our pens.

We need to develop a plan to move the pens from the docks to the main creek

channel. Thursday evening????? I am open to suggestions on this one.

I will start circulating a revised feeding schedule list in my next email.

Sorry for the short notice but I just got the call and email....... The DEC

promised we would be the first to get the fish this year and they delivered

    :)

    Thank you, thank you

    Bob H

  5. At this point I but mine, I'm a bit of a green horn. Has anyone made a thread on how to build your

own or the best place to buy the pieces? What is the cost of building your own vs. buying?

    lavarock

I started tying my own flies about 4 years ago. While I believe that in the long run it may save you some money, in the short term

it doesnt. Its fun to do and you will get some satifaction out of catching fish on your "product".

A couple of places to check out would be http://www.atommiktrollingflies.com/ and http://www.purpletacoflysupply.net/

Truth is... soon youll find yourself completely addicted and tying up an unbelievable amount of flies.

  6. Very nice post!

You just cant go wrong with the blacks releases. I havent used the chamberlains so I cant speak for them.

The Legendary Products Elberta Clip'er is simple to use and works great for fixed sliders. Roemer also makes the "liberator" fixed slder thats works great too. Both of them work great for mupped rigs.

I dont stack my riggers to much anymore but when I do I use the roemers. I have offshores on the boat too but I prefer the adjustability of the roemers. With offshore releases they have a snap swivel that attaches to the downrigger cable, then you take one of the pinch pads and place that on the downrigger cable where you want it, then place your line in the other pinch pad, and your fishing.

  7. Pleasure unit,

The best advice i can give you is to go through a captains course like the one offered by Sea tech marine training. If you have your mind set in getting your license than its really the best way to do it. Youll learn that there is alot to it and they will walk you through the process from start to finish. http://www.seatechmarinetraining.com/

    heres a list of requirements:

    red cross cpr certified

    red cross first aid certified

    character references- http://www.seatechmarinetraining.com/docs/character.pdf

    drug test

    sea service form- http://www.seatechmarinetraining.com/do ... vessel.pdf

    physical- http://www.seatechmarinetraining.com/do ... ysical.pdf

    pass exam

    application - http://www.seatechmarinetraining.com/do ... cation.pdf

    Hope this helps!
