Don't skimp on your rod holders! Good rod holders will last you a lifetime. I personally use Traxstech rod holders but there a lot of other great quality rod holder companies out there. Spend the extra $ you won't regret it.

Here is the rules from last years challenge. The rules are probably similar to last years. http://www.fairhavenny.com/Fair%20Haven ... 202008.pdf

Make sure your downriggers can handle whatever weight you choose.

Pete,
Actually the first place prize is a fish mount by Redneck Taxidermy. They took his king at the Challenge to mount it. Chris can't wait to get it back!

You can use a small spro swivel on the conventional and the levelwind Convectors. You will have to file out the levelwind so the swivel can fit through it. That's what I did on my Convectors. As for tying the copper to the swivel, I used a haywire twist knot. http://www.fishsa.com/kntiesht.php

I am using the new X4 Fishhawk and I like it a lot. I haven't had any problems with it so far. It does give you more info than the Depth Raider (surface speed & temp) but the Depth Raider is an excellent probe and I think you would be happy with either of them.

Thanks Daun.

Daun,
Are there any shops on the east side of the lake carrying it? If not, can we order it through the mail?

Happy B-day Chas!!! Call me if you want to go fishing next Thursday.

Check out this page from A-tom-mik. It shows how much copper the Penn reels hold. Also, yes it is common to let out more than 400ft of copper. 400ft will get you approx. 80-90 feet down and is a common length used. I hope this helps. http://www.atommiktrollingflies.com/reels.htm

I have one and if I remember correctly, to switch it from Kg to lbs you need to hold one of the buttons down until it changes. It's been a while since I had to change it so I'll apologize in advance if I'm wrong
Good luck.

Glad you had a good trip Chris. It was a pleasure talking to you and your father at the motel! Hope to see you again next spring.

I've stayed at Jellystone Park before also and they have a great fish cleaning station as well as sell basic fishing tackle. It's a great place to take the family.

Rich,
The fish was taken to the taxidermist and he called in some of the local charter captains to see the fish. From what I understand, Bill Hilts weighed the fish. I'm not 100% sure of that but he does have a small article about the fish in his most recent fishing report. It is hard to believe the fish could be over 40 lbs! By the way, the fish was weighed 3 days after being caught so who knows what the fish really weighed.
