  1. I believe most swivel tips spin all the way around. Not worth it in my opinion becasue you still have to have the rod postioned right so the line is on the rollers, regardless of what the tip is doing. I still recommend the twillys on the custom rods we build, rollers or not. I have personally gotten away from the rollers just to avoid the hastle of worriying about having the rods postiones right in the holders. We put gimbal butts on the roller rods, but then the rod has to put in the holder so the reel is towards the bow, in order to keep the line on the rollers. Tough to see the counter. If you do want rollers, the ligthweight Aftco rollers are the way to go. Seven footers all the way, makes life a lot easier in my opinion. I know my wife and kids appreciate them!

  2. For those interested, here is a little more info about how we rig our thumper rods:

Dodger needs to be a Luhr Jensen or Les Davis. They consistently begin to rotate at 2.7 mph. My best leader length is 54 inches, including a snubber, and an 18 inch dropper to the weight off of kind of a 3 way swivel rig. With a 16 oz weighton 20# wire, 300 feet of wire will put you down around 100 feet. Use the thumper to determine your trolling speed. When it rolls you are at 2.7 mph down speed, check your surface speed or GPS SOG when it rolls and you can then vary your speed on you electronics for that given direction. Need to check speed in each direction you are trolling. By far the most accurate down speed unit I use, and it catches fish. My best combo is the Trash Can/Green Stripe dodger with a silver green Howie Flies. Chartreuse and green beads in the fly.

  3. I like to use 50# leader. When my brother was down from Alaska a few years ago, he developed a hook setup that has become the standard for many guys and at least one manufacturer. We called it the tournament tie and it is a tandem snelled hook setup. Rear hook is a No. 2 treble and the front hook is a 4/0 or 5/0 beak hook. Beads of your choice go in between the two hooks.

  4. I have a V4 Crossflow powerhead and a lower unit off of a 1987 OMC motor. Powerhead is fine except crankshaft splines are stripped. Lower unit has slightly bent skeg and upper drive shaft has stripped splines. $200 for everything. I am in the Tully area and would prefer they get picked up if enyone is interested.

BTW, make sure you don't ever run any engine with a slightly bent prop. I learned the hard way.

  5. Nope Bill, same ole' 209. I fished with the Penn engineers in 2006 and they told us the good news/bad news scenario - Good news- "we are coming out with a linecounter", Bad news (for trollers at least) "it is on the 209 frame" The 209 is really a mainstay of their saltwater jigging/party boat reels. Now the party boaters can drop their rigs to a desired depth I guess.
