  1. Went out for about 2 hours for our first ice fishing of the year (3rd time ever for me and 1st time for my daughter Sammie).  We had a bucket full of minnows and were good to go.  Ice was nice and thick probably a good 9 inches and even though the wind picked up a bit at times the sun was nice and warm.  Best part for me was how much fun my daughter was having.  It started off on a great note when a crayfish snuck into the bait shops scoop and made his way into our bucket.  A friend named nipper now lives in our basement (well... for the next day or so at least).  The fishing was super slow so after about 5 minutes of jigging she gave up and proceeded to build a snow fort with her aunt while I fished.  I didn't try moving around much at all, and only had 3 holes to jig and 1 for a tip-up but we didn't get any bites.  As I sat jigging I over heard a guy who was leaving say that he had a camera and saw a bunch of fish in there but couldn't get any of them interested.  Of all the people we watched unless the guys in the flip-overs were getting bites were were all getting skunked.  Oh well.  I would almost put money on the fact that no one out there was having as much fun as Sammie and that makes me VERY happy.  We'll see how it goes tomorrow.  Hopefully some of my minnows are still alive.

Mr.Duck, where were you fishing ?

  2. Yes they work . I have used a 6" and a 4" Lazers last season paired with a Bosch Lithium Ion cordless drills in 18 and 36 volt hammer drills . Nils makes drills with the adapter built in . They come in 4.5 6" and 8" they work very well. As for a driver they don't mate up .

D.J, I've used the drill auger combo tor several seasons and it workes fine. I use a DeWalt drill with hi- low speed, have to use low speed, it does a good job. Once you get over foot of ice it kills my batteries quick, I carry four batteries. The new batteries may hold up better. Good luck.   O I use a six auger.

  3.   Took a ride up to Ibay this afternoon, open water from the north end boat launch to the first set of channel markers. One trailer in parking lot, I think it was a duck hunter. Theres open water from the south end up to the first parking lot at the bottom of the hill. No one on the ice at north bay.

  4. So I just had one installed a week ago and the doctor told me no hunting this year. well he doesn't know me very well.

I also have several contender hand guns that I am comfortable with. Our season in Pa. opens in a couple weeks and i feel great now so should be even better then.

    Thanks  Jim

                 Hey Fishless,

I had one installed last April, and have been shooting bow and gun,no trouble. Maybe you should lesson to your doctor. Give it a chance to heal.

  5. If the powder didn't make a difference, my next move was to get a new scope Mike. The gun and Nikon scope are about 10 years old, and that's quite a few shots. I had it bore sighted a few months ago, and the guy at the gun shop told me it wasn't that far off. The gun will definately have a new scope on it next season. I'm going to shoot it again tomorrow to make sure that one 10 ring shot wasn't a "fluke".

DaveF, check with a Nikon dealer you might be able too have it repaired for $40-50 bucks or free.I have a old Redfeild 2.5 around forty years, after about twenty years I sent it back for a rebuild, they did it free, about three years ago I had it done again, cost $40 bucks. :)

  6. Was sighting in my TC Omega the other day and was shooting 3" low and 2" to the right at 50 yards with a 295grn. powerbelt and 100grns. of pyrodex pelets. Couldn't get it to move no matter what I did with the scope. Even tried 150grns. of pyrodex. Eventually I got the windage but still 3" low.

Read nothing but positive things about Blackhorn 209 powder that is made exclusively for inline muzzleloaders. Took a trip over to HVS's and got me some. Looked up a ballisics chart online and suggested 120grns. with a 295 grn. powerbelt. Loaded it up, went to the target, pulled the trigger and hit the bullseye. Cleaned the gun and put it away. I'll use Blackhorn 209 powder from now on.

I've heard a lot of good reports about Blackhorn and I will give it a try but not this season. I want to burn up the 777 I've got.

DaveF. It sounds to me like you should send your scope in for repares or get a new one. The Blackhorn mite have given you what you wanted, but after the season take it out and see if you can ajust the scope up and down and left to right. I'm thinking you have a problem with it.

Good luck abd be safe.   :)              Mike.

  7. WWIV that's a great idea!! never thought of that, usually 1 shot is needed but in those hurry up times, well there is no hurry up, but with that Idea it will definitely speed things up, with these guns the shot is so devastating that a quick 2nd isn't necessary. I've seen where they fly a$$ over tin cup, finished business.

the first season I used BP I was shooting a TC renagade 50cal. with doubble set triggers patch and ball.no scope.  My son pushed a nice 7pt. to me and I broke his back, I quickly reloaded I set the first trigger and started to come down on the deer and touched the other trigger and shot up in the air. I reload and finished him off. It was a learning thing. :) .

  8. I found an easy way to remove the old primer, I got a telescopeing magnet,it pulls the primer out  without any fooling around. Try it you'll like it.

                                                                    Mike.

  9.        Well it appears my post was not very clear. My question is do you have to manually have to remove the spent primer by hand on all the in line BP guns. It seems to me it would be a pain in the a-- to remove the old primer at the end of the season to reload in a foot of snow and the temp. down around 10degs. and the scope in the way.

Four you that asked I shoot 223 gr.power belts with 100gr.of triple seven and its a 45 cal. gun. I don't like the sabits, its hard to get the first round in with a clean barrel. thats fine at the range but not in the woods.

I hope this clears things up. :) .            mike.

  10. My son gave me a CVA Kodak Mag. with a two to seven scope two years ago.

I took it to the range to site it in, the first thing I learned was the spent primer had two be removed manually, the scope was bore sighted so I took a shoot at twenty yds, right on, moved out to 50yds and took an other shot, it was about five ins. high and two ins. to the right. I reloaded and couldn't close the breach. I packed up and went home, I pulled the barrel off and found the spent primer had fallen inside the breach and was keeping it from closeing.I solved the problem by useing a pocket magnet to remove the primer. Are all the in lines the same?  Thanks.

                                                                                           Mike.

  11. I knew it meant propane I was just making sure that was in fact what you were referring to !

My world is filled with acronyms.

    Thanks!

    Tim

Thanks guys for the interesting replies, pros. and cons.

Mower, hope you get to retire soon. :) .

  12. I just spent a week in Hector and saw signs all over Ban LPG. We asked about it nobody seemed to know much about it. what I did hear was some one wants to put LP. under Seneca lake.

    Whats the story on that?

We were out there also , thought I saw a boat like yours but you never got close enough to see you.  We kept 30-40 , our best bite was on the east side off the chanel makers.Cought a bunch of dinks but enought 10=11 inchers to keep us there. :) .

  14. Launched at Port Ontario and cycled thru our way points to no avail running an assortment of stuff on the riggers and wires. 65 degree water to the bottom. Marked bait and fish but almost all fish were closely associated with bottom. My sense was the fish were negative but I don't usually fish after Labor day so there is probably much I don't know. It was just rough enough for our little 19' Islander that heading in was a relief. Picked up some terminal tackle and odds and ends at All Seasons and went home with our tail between our legs, drained the I/O and swapped the kicker over to the winter boat. Time to hunt...

Amen to the hunting Chowder.     Mike.
