You have every right to voice your opinions.  I think it's unprofessional and ignorant to tell a newcomer to take their ball and go home.  Don't like it don't fish it?  Really guys?  Thought the whole point of the rec open was to bring new guys into the tourney scene.  Now you tell them don't fish it if they don't like it?

True statement.  I think this subject has just gotten really old and a lot of us are just tired of hearing the same old points when they really hold no merit.  About 5-6 years ago the Am side of the Pro Am got an (at the time) unwanted makeover.

Without reopening that old wound, the skinny version is that the Am division was dropped and the Open was added in it's place.  If you want an interesting 9 page read on the subject, here is the link to that topic from back in 09

    http://www.lakeontariounited.com/fishing-hunting/topic/7415-2009-pro-am-rule-changes/

There were a few years following when there was no place for those guys that were in the middle to fish.  We didn't want the Open, yet were not interested in a 12 fish a day format with an observer because that's a minimum of 4 guys limits PLUS an observer and that blows on a small boat.  The open division none the less was born and it was OPEN to everyone.  Yes, a charter guy or two fished it a couple/ few years back, but who cares??  You see the name and get all intimidated, but how do you know they don't have a bunch of kids or newbs just out for some fun?

No charter with a decent crew is going to fish the current open division - that's **** from a few years ago that just keeps coming up as if it was last year.

I have not been a big proponent of the Niagara Pro Am because of how they have dealt with Amateur teams over the past half dozen years, so I've exercised my option to not be a verbal supporter OR fish it, but some things have changed and with those changes us amateurs actually have a place to fish again.......until the next change

The current format with it's classic box and trophy box format gives a guy like me a place to fish.  Even if I run my small old boat with an inexperienced crew I can compete in a 5 box big fish format.  That's perfect for me and my son so I have changed my stance and hope to again become involved. This year work just didn't allow it.

So, with this newer format why would a charter disgrace themselves and fish the open where the pay out sucks ??   They won't, so get over it and move on.

Fish the tournament in whatever division gets you to commit, because having teams enter is the only way these tourneys will continue to exist.

  2. I'm sure we can use it. Maybe highest amateur finish?

Damn kids these days.....gimmie gimmie gimmie......go earn it! Hahaha

Great question. In the event we have a blow day whatever round the brackets stop in the heaviest and 2nd heaviest catches will take money.

Okay, I'll bring it along.  Whatever you want to use it for is fine.  It does have the first place emblem, so that limits it's use a little or I would have suggested it for a day two comeback award.

Not sure I understand what designates a team as amateur in this event?

  3. It's the wrong wire, but it's still a good price. Lol. That spool would retail at $182.99. Keep in mind It's been said I am not a very creditable source, so you may want other opinions. Lol

  4. I hope you didn't purchase it yet, that is not the wire you want !! That is soft single strand wire. It's 30 lb test with a dia. of .020. Guys use that a lot for stripper trolling.

  5. Hey Matt, that is below wholesale. I have their current wholesale catalog and price list and I can't mention wholesale prices - that is really cheap. Suggested retail on 1000 ft 30 lb spools is $52.99. Just be sure it's 30# Surfstrand either A030 (bright) or B030 (camo). AFW makes a lot of different wires for saltwater application s. Good Luck with your season!

I also wish to say that Fishtails made a very good and valid point when he said that statements made without the data to back it up carry the risk off starting "rumors" on the Internet which can be very unfair to individuals or companies and I would never wish to become part of that scenario.  Once again though the issue points up that personal preference plays a big role in our decisions regarding equipment and if if something works for us we have confidence in it and continue to use it.....

Thanks Les, that's all I was sayin. I appreciate your efforts and I never said there wasn't truth to it, but we sometimes get things backwards because we are human - and then false info begins to be spread and that isn't fair to the manufacturer.

Tile Man got his panties in a bunch and I think he totally missed my point.  Maybe I could have worded it better but really.... :)

  7. Hey Paul, you say I never listen to you. Not totally true - I love my TX-44's !! :)  Both styles boards have a time and place.

See ya at The Orleans Open bud. Jeff is joining me for a couple days so we'll get a beer or two!

  8. I called out Less? I think you guys are a tad touchy. Lol. I simply said if you are making a claim saying a chart said a product may be inferior, to similar products, we should also provide said chart. I think that is how we would want to be treated if we were in the tackle business? If I am wrong, I apologize . It sure won't be the first time.

By the way, I never said I had a chart, the info is in my catalog and on their website.

If you search for a chart on tensile strength for 7 strand wire I believe it has close to or at the lowest of the common brands in terms of strength. It was a whileagotht I saw it so you may want to check it out if you can find it. I've had good luck with Accustrand (Cablestrand Corporation) Mailn and Mason in that order.

It would be nice for you to supply this chart before making such a statement, along with the source of the "chart".  While it may or may not be accurate, This is how rumors are started and false beliefs are formed.

As far as American Fishing Wire goes, I have used their 7 strand 30 lb and 20 lb wire for years. The higher the breaking strength the thicker dia. the wire is probably going to be. Same holds true in the reverse. Keep in mind that the larger the dia. of the wire, the less depth you will achieve, thus the reason some of us use 20 lb wire. Afw 30 lb is .012 inches and the 20 lb is .011 inches in dia.

AFW makes quality wire used by many charters and tournament teams throughout the great lakes, but they mainly target the saltwater fishery so we don't hear that much about them on Lake O.

  10. Final Flight {Rollie) is a very good fisherman and all around super nice guy who just gave you some very solid advise. Without knowing the fow you were fishing over and types of spoons you ran, It's tough to say what went wrong exactly but most likely you had spoons far too high.  Paul mentioned charters and that is a great way to learn.  If the money is an issue, sign up to be an observer for the Niagara Pro Am or the the tournament at Oak Orchard the week after the pro am.  That way you learn from pro's, plus you even get paid a couple dollars instead of it costing you.  You'll walk away with more knowledge than you can imagine.

    Good luck with your season!
