  1. It would be great to just hear from one or two guys that have used these.  I have seen them before and they just look so bulky.  I guess I am having trouble envisioning it.   For my boat,  electric would be nice to reel in coppers for a lure change or when picking up and moving or end of the day.  How many times have a lot of us left a rig on a 600-700 copper too long without a bite cause we didn't want to keep reeling it in. I can't be the only one guilty of that :)

I see nothing wrong with it, but I personally wouldn't want to reel in a fish that way.  I have electric downriggers, electric planer board reels - why not the copper ?

  2. Just curious on everyone's thoughts after a bad stir up of the Lake this late in the season?

Planning on coming up on Thursday until Monday to fish Mexico, and have been watching the weather and sure looks like it's a blow off for the first 2 days. Considering how strange this season has been and having   5 hr ride just wondering your thoughts on how much it will affect the bite after the stir up. Just seems the fish are really late and might be worth waiting another week and hope the weathers better. knowing this will be our last trip of the year and it was slow fishing earlier. Just wondering everyone's thoughts since it seems going by some of the posts that the Thermo is still in play and the fish are still kind of spotty.

As noted, if you have a smaller boat it may be until after the weekend until you can fish but then again that forecast can and probably will change daily.  Also, if the direction has some some east in it you will be less effected by it in Mexico Bay.  The blow will most likely only effect where the fish are based on what it does to the temp. With the call for constant directional wind changes, when all is said and done it may not even change it all that much. All this south wind is bringing temp way up and bringing the fish in closer because at this point they will not be leaving until they run, but the hard west and north west should bring that warm water right back and warm up the inside waters again.

I am not a river fisherman, but with the abundance of Coho showing up, I wouldn't be surprised to see more fish hit the river this weekend because I don't think they tend to stick around very long.  Fishing this past week was GREAT with lots of fish crushing A-Tom-Mik flies behind both skateboards and spinnies between 100 - 200 fow in Oswego with most boats catching.  At some point here the fishing will slow, so get em while the getting is good my friends !!

Lots of charter boats still running trips and have openings with some of the best fishing of the year happening right now.  Don't wait!  Pull your boat out, call a charter and book a day, whatever it takes. It's gonna be a long cold winter :)

  3. I want to thank Capt. Brian Garret of Tall Tails for a good deed.  Two days ago I pulled the boat from K&G to Wrights marina in Oswego and I forgot the tie down I put on my Otter Boats that I leave on my hardtop.  I'm good like that  :) .  We notice at Wrights we are missing an Otter boat so after launching the boat and docking, we traced our route back but it was nowhere to be found.

I quickly gave up on it and owe another thanks to Al and Mary from Hook N Up on Red Dock for offering the use of one of theirs.  When I returned to the boat several hours later, There sat BOTH otter boats on my engine box   .  Crazy thing is, I don't have my name on them. Turns out Brian left K&G soon after I did and figured it was mine after seeing me leave shortly before  I suppose.

So Thank you Very much Tall Tails, I owe you one !!!  Times like this really make me feel good about our fishing community in general, and honored to be a very small part of it.

  4. Well.... if you need to keep a 15" fish, either you don't fish too often, don't have many years of fishing under your belt or you don't catch many fish! Or, you need to bring every fish back to the dock, to show your buddies that you're the great white hunter.

Lets face it, it's all about the thrill of catching a big fish.. A 15" fish doesn't do it for me. Let it grow a few years and it will.

After 20 years of fishing these salmon, you'll get over it.

I don't think this is really an accurate blanket statement.  As an example, I just got back from a two day trip where I took two buddies up to Lake O.  They wanted fish, so why I normally release most fish this was a meat trip. We limited day one and one of those fish was a heavy bleeder 20" king.  Now, after being drug around behind a flasher fly and then reeled in and being out of the water a couple minutes to remove deep set hooks, that fish was dead - say whatever you will about it's chances, IMO it had no chance for survival.

In the box it went and I don't want to have to feel embarrassed about that because you or others think it makes me less of a fisherman?   Like Nick (Ruff Rider) , I put in a decent amount of trips per year for someone from SE Pa.  Don't judge me at the cleaning station based on the size of one fish. We kept a smaller suicide steelhead too.

This mentality isn't right. Knowing it exists,  I cleaned the two small fish first, then the matures just to get them off the table.   I prefer to look at it this way instead.:  Using my trip as an example -  A boat goes out and takes it's legal limit. In my case it was 9 fish.  At the end of the trip we killed 9 fish.  Had I thrown those two dead smaller fish back and caught 2 more larger fish, we would have accounted for 11 dead fish.

Add that up over the year with all the charters and do the math. It's actually conservation.  Those of us who account for the majority of fish caught over a whole season do care, and we release every small fish possible.  If it's going to die, please cull it and put it towards your limit and enjoy :)

Just my opinion on the matter, for what it's worth.

As a side note guys, the fishing right now rocks !!  Bait is still in the bellies and the kings and coho's are in Oswego and as of yesterday they were still biting hard !!  It was an all A-Tom-Mik fly bite for us and they are swallowing the fly's right now with long blistering runs.  These kings still have a lot left in the tank!  Tons of fun right now, get out it you can.

I have been trying to catch a coho and have had 0 success.

Hey ADK1,  The Coho have shown up in Oswego and in good numbers.  We caught 4 in the 8-12 lb range just two days ago.  They were mixed in with the kings and also a bit outside of them.  They were still silver and still holding in temp, so in our case the Coho were 120 - 150 foot of cable out on the riggers with a 12lb shark just after a west blow, but that was coming up fast as we left with a hard south wind.  Get em while you can !!!

  10. Hey Guys, I have too much tackle and not enough room in my cuddy for it all - or time to run it.  I need to thin the herd.

For sale :  I have a load of brand new MC Rockets artificial herring strips ( www.mcrockets.com ) I have about every color made and then some in both reg and mag sizes.   MC Rockets work awesome and I catch lots of my biggest fish on them every year.   Since I haven't been tourney fishing much the past two years I am not using many and on average you can get 10 - 15  fish on just one before they get chewed up.

    Part of my collection
