Great Job Greg getting those kids involved Mine's growing up now and choosing girls over fishing with dad, but we had a helluva run. Nothing better than taking a kid fishing.

Thanks ! I had a blast by myself actually, even if it did cost me a few fish. I crank my music and nobody complains about my terrible singing. Lol. I am totally ready for my AC/DC concert on Wed !!
All in all I thought the fishing in Sodus was slow for kings, but they are there if you are willing to work for them. It sounds like the king fishing is better in Oz and Mexico but that's the way it should be this time of year.
It should get better quickly, and had it not blown out of the east this afternoon It might have been a blood bath.
Any day now !!

That's Right Nick...lol. You'd be suprised how much deeper they run. I run Jensen ' s on my high wires because sometimes I will use a mag size ring if I am fishing high in the water column.

I agree With Les on the deeper divers. They dive deeper. That is what I use on my inside deeper wires. I love them !

Doubled on majors as I was just starting to pull lines. Both popped off after nice runs on the wires. Just that kinda east wind light bite day here in Sodus. Can't remember loosing this many fish.

Same with all our browns Nick. Maybe that's why we caught them ...haha. I have been marking fish in the bait all day. I think they're just happy there. Lol. No suprised kings have empty bellies the end of Aug though.

East wind kicked up and screen is a bit more bleak. Still bait, but not many hooks. Just when it begins to look promising, another bad wind shift.

425 wire with a meat rig got whacked, but I was busy jamming on my air guitar to AC/DC. Lol.

It really is, but I personally love it all the same. I hear a lot of complaining, but the fish are showing up. It's tough competing with all this bait.

I am not derby fishing today, my son misses his gf so he went home with the family today. Now that he's 16 I guess I need to find some new fishing buddies. Lol
It's been an odd day. Perfect weather and enough bites to keep you alert, but they were hitting light this morning and at one point I was 0 for 7 with one very nice king lost in the prop wash.
Since Then I Picked Up Two steelhead and A small king. The screen has been terrific. Bites so far have been meat early, then flies and the last couple on spoons.

Don't think so Les, tried all that s tuff and was 0 for 6 or 7 untill I finally just landed a couple nice steelhead. Loads of fish, but tons of bait also.

Thanks for the updates Nick and everyone else. I head up to Sodus this afternoon for a week. You give me a good starting point at least for tomorrow. Lots of south wind in the forecast should change things up a lot and cool down that inside water a bit. I will post some reports
-
Was nothing learned from last year ??? Fish are spread out from 80 ft all the way over to Canada. Looking like it will run late again this year. That's sweet- more time to chase em with the boat !
I'm on my way up for a week starting tomorrow Nick. Good luck today !!

in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Posted · Edited by Fishtails
We are all entitled to our opinions and I do respect that but It's just too easy to say the fish aren't there. Problem is that hurts the local economy by keeping fishermen home. These days guys sit home and read these reports and if they sound bad then guys will hold back until reports improve. A lot of boats ARE catching, just not reporting.
As for the fish being decimated, the lake wide fishing at points this year don't support that IMO. Last year was different, as lake wide salmon fishing sucked - yet at the very end and seemingly from nowhere they appeared after most had packed it in for the season.
This season, at certain points, and in certain locations of the lake fishing has been outstanding. Canadians whooped on them for a good while. We have A LOT of bait, and nobody can convince me that doesn't play a role. A hungry fish is just flat out easier to convince with metal and mylar. If you want to create bites this year, you need to step up your game because most of these fish are not wanting for food.
The constant wind shifts and changing lake conditions really pushed the fish around and thinned them out this year. Salmon fishing in a lot of south shore ports was tough this season and Sodus was REALLY tough. Like a few of us are preaching, some fish are there but if you find them those who have had success don't leave them.
My last trip (full day) out this past week in Sodus I had 15 bites fishing solo and I fished about a one square mile piece of water right in front of Chimney Bluffs in 110-130 making small circles and figure eights, leaving only twice to poke out to 250 and then right back to work it some more. It's been a really tough bite for sure and I can't remember having to work so hard for the whole season, but hard work and experimentation while staying on the fish will pay off eventually. When they are there early and then disappear keep in mind that they most likely dropped to the bottom. I run one wire and one rigger right on the bottom, literally, with J plugs, meat and flasher/fly or dodgers and a spoon or two and a FF in 55 - 60 degrees to keep rods moving. Less is also better this time of year. Just keep changing out chit till they fire.
Sorry if this comes off as a rant or self promoting. My intent is very much the opposite but I keep hearing fishing in lake O is soooo bad and it's just not true or fair to local business. True, It's a tough bite and requires more work and finesse than we've seen in the past, but Lady O is alive and well and in her belly lies a world class fishery that is both extraordinary and very healthy. Ya can't catch em sitting on the puter
Fish on my LOU friends!!
