  2. Hi,
Would you buy a boat in winter without having a tryout on the water

I bought my GLS22 in January of 2019 hadn’t been run in 8 years. Took the owners word it had been winterized. Took a BIG gamble But I bought it right. Could have parted it out and got my money back. Turned out to be a great buy. Took some TLC to get it up and running. But it’s been a great boat IMG_1542.JPG

  3. Where are you planning on fishing and how deep?
I agree with either torpedo's or Shark types weights, two members on here make these type, Troutman and Bikini bottom, check the classified ads
The currents on Lake O can cause havoc with pancake weights

Agree 1000%. Pancake weights = tangles. They take on a life of their own in cross currents

  4. Just remember that "Agreed Value" coverage protects just your boat if something bad happens but it's "Liability" coverage that protects
everything else that you own from the lawyers.

Make sure you are getting the right coverage not just the lowest price.

Great advice. I might add to be careful of “ actual cash value “ coverage. The insurance companies idea of what your boat is worth will be far different than yours. Get agreed value or replacement cost

  7. This fight might not be over The emperor Cuomo just set up a commission to determine where ( at the moment ) solar energy sites can be located , without the input or consent of townships the newest site is located between Watertown and Henderson. 2000 acres of solar panels in a residential area. The commission is titled “ Site commission for RENEWABLE energy locations “ I would guess that means wind too. I’ll get the article and post ASAP He just took the towns and county’s out of the equation. His statement was “ the state , not the towns , determine where renewable energy sites will be located

  8. Another Buffalo News story this morning on the short operating life span of the wind mills and the loss of school and property taxes to rebuild them with tax incentives. The plastic fiber glass blades have a short life span. Newer installed blades are larger and less hazard to wild life such as birds. Newer nacelles, gear boxes and generator blades, will be more efficient with technology improvements twenty years better. The present towers will be used to support the new equipment. Anyway that is what the selling promoters claim.

  9. Nothing beats the sense of accomplishment in my opinion. Managing the chaos all by yourself is where it's at. Just be careful man and consider a ripcord and/or jacket. You never know when that rogue wave or boat or fish reach might cause you to lose your balance. Don't mean to be a downer.

I NEVER fish solo without my inflatable on. If you do happen to go overboard while trolling , the boat will just keep going at 2.5 mph. It’s not coming back for you. You’re on your own

  10.

I wasn’t able to fish as often as I wanted , and as often as I usually do. But the times I made it out to my favorite haunts I found the fishing much slower than in past years. I usually was able to scrounge one or two. Had one skunk. How about the rest of you ? Was it me or was the fishing off this year ? I normally fish the East end of the lake from Mexico Pt to Henderson It appears the best fishing was west of Oz

  11. Depth and distance are two different things. Depth is the distance in a downward direction from a given point. Distance can refer to any number of directions from the originating point. Chinook 35 summed it up very well in his comment. By the way, the shape of the weight matters significantly as he notes in his example. The pancake weights probably have the least accuracy depth-wise because of their shape. They tend to go quite a ways off to the side - especially at higher speeds. The more hydrodynamically the shape (less resistance in the water) the truer the weight tracks through the water which should translate to less blow-back and truer depth display on the depth finder. Similarly the heavier the weight the more it holds the wire in a downward position with shape being held constant. Again the resistance in the water is the critical variable.

You hit another of my pet peeves Pancake weights. Years ago I bought 2 13 # pancakes trying to win the blowback battle. Suddenly , I’m getting terrible tangles. What gives ? Made the discovery that pancakes take on a life of their own in cross currents. I fished with them for a few trips and they gathered dust in my cellar for many years. I finally dumped , I mean sold them last year. Hope the new owner has a good vocabulary He’ll need it. Lol

  12. The blowback on anything less than 12 lbs is A LOT!  I had a smart troll and measured it for 8 lb, 10 lb and 12 lb weights.
Even with 12 lb you normally had to have about 20% more cable out to get to the desired depth. 10 lb was ridiculous ... 8 lb was
    impossible to get deep.

As others point out, you should use the heaviest your downrigger and gunwale can support ... and hopefully that is at least 12 lbs.

Went to 16# torpedoes from troutman87 and have never looked back. Got a couple of 15 # cannonballs I keep in case ( very rare ) I want to target oil cans on the bottom if they hang up , not so much crying involved [emoji13]

  13. I believe my FF is accurate af when it shows fish (depth) on the screen and what depth my rigger balls are running,

FH speed & temp is probably correct, i dont think its depth measurement is accurate.

    10# pancakes

It shows the distance from your ducer to any object in its cone . Bottom , fish and your weights Fish are not attached to your boat ( at least not yet, lol ). That’s why the show as inverted U’s or V’s. The sonar sees them as deeper ( further away ) as you move over them the apex of the U ( and true depth ) and again the sonar sees them as further away as you move past. The sonar is seeing your weights at a constant distance , hence the line. They are NOT at that depth. They are at that DISTANCE from the ducer. Brand of sonar or quality of ducer is immaterial. They all work the same way. Takes a little bit of thought to get your head around it. But it’s the way it is

  14. Wrong. There are several charts for angle versus depth with amount of cable out. You can also figure it yourself Measure the angle of your cable and how deep you want to fish. The equation will tell you how much cable you need out to reach that depth

Here’s another one and a side note. The depth ( distance finder ) finder is not showing you the true depth of your weight or bait. It’s showing the distance from the transducer. Your distance finder shows your weight at 130 ft. You are actually fishing much shallower due to blow back.

  15. My advice would be use the heaviest weight your riggers will support.

as far as blow back there is no set calculations to account for the angle. If you can’t see your weight on your graph you will need a probe at the weight to get an accurate reading. A fishhawk td is $125 and a cheap way to get accurate depth and temp readings. You can also send it down a dipsey line or copper to get readings on those lines as well.

  16. Cant say i have ever heard that

Apparently it’s only a requirement if the marine radio is turned on .

If you choose to turn it off the requirement doesn’t count. Lol.

The purpose of the FCC regulation was to relieve congestion on VHF channel 16, the distress, safety and calling frequency. FCC regulations require boaters having VHF radios to maintain a watch on either VHF channel 9 or channel 16, whenever the radio is turned on and not communicating with another station.

Ahh ok. I dont fish with my radio on. Definitely #1 rule is never pass a stranded boat.

If you have a marine radio aboard , you are required by law , to maintain a watch on channel 16 at all times  Fishing or not

  18. I have the Cannon 5st’s and when they come up, they come up and stop fast. To the point where there is a momentary slack and snap action above the weight whether in the water or not. I actually had the fish hawk safety cable come apart and lossy my weight. I put the snubbers on them and viola, smooth when they stop. I recommend them for the high speed cannons that don’t have a slow down feature on the retrieve.

I have mag 10 Stx. Yes they are fast. But my auto stop works smoothly. The weight stops at the surface with no snap or jerk

  19. I think the snubbers will mainly help in rough seas— it snapped when a wave flung the shark up and the line went a little slack and then big force when it came back down.  I need to bring the weight about a foot out of the water to hook my release, hence why it’s susceptible to wave action.  I’ve experimented with some other methods such as using retro ease and the Scotty releases hooked on the mainline above the ball, but settled on just bringing the ball out of the water a foot or so.

I NEVER let my weight come out of the water. Me releases are adjusted so I can set with weight in the water.
