  1. unfortunately...very poorly. Didn't have a release. Found a few fish around 60 fow and more out around 130 to 140 fow. All over the water column and tried everything I could but just couldn't get them to go....still in the early stages of the learning curve with uncooperative fish. Guess that's fishing. would like you and your dad to come out woodcock hunting this fall if you have time.... also...I bought 30# Ande pink as per some suggestions for the summer fishing...is this still ok for the shallower fishing...put a 20-30 foot flourocarbon leader on? Need some advice as I'll try coming up again soon!!
  2. good report Bill....am heading up tues for a couple days...hope we can get into a couple of those!!
  3. It seems that a down temp/speed sensor is very helpful in finding these fish. I realize this a bit of a ford/chevy question but am curious as to which products guys are using and which work better? thanks!
  4. what's a spinny....another name for a Spin Doctor?
  5. Hey Bill, Thanks for the report....sorry it happened but at least won't keep you "down" in the future. Fishing "blind" is tough and your report lets me know that the electronics sure do help....so I don't feel too bad when I have a tough time out there and will have to get a probe one of these days.
  6. First time up this year with new boat and gear....obvious that I have lots more to learn. Was very slow and the fish were scattered over a lot of the water column. tues pm went NW and started in 160 fow. Tolled out till I found more fish at 192 fow. I only have two riggers so we couldn't cover as much as most of you and finally caught a small brown (didn't even break the release). At 7:30 the 50' rigger goes and what I believe to be a steelhead, comes straight to the top and jumps all over the place. Throws the spoon, an NK blue dolphin! :x I don't have a down probe so can't tell you speed or temp but surface was from 2.5 to 3 mph. My fishing partner is not feeling well....said it was the flue so we head in. Think it may have picked up but no sense in losing a partner!! Tues night thunderstorms and all sorts of nasty weather passes and is finally done by 5:30 am...head NW again and hope to find more cooperative fish. 50' rigger over 180 fow fires and finally manage to land a 7 # steelie (same NK blue dophin spoon). Tried for a few more hours with much the same results. Scattered fish and little if any for bait fish. Was a bit frustrating but at least got the new boat and gear tried and will be back! Thanks to all you guys, especially Billy V, for your posts...I've learned a lot and will continue to try!
  7. I've put 30# Ande line on my reels to combat the fleas. At what depth should I use a flourocarbon leader. If so how much? If the fish are deep, do I connect the spoon directly to the 30#?
  8. what pound test do you use from SD to fly? flourocarbon?
  9. I have some Cabelas Depth master gold DMG 25's with fireline on them. I bought some Ande 30# pink line. I was thinking of taking off 600' or so of the fire line and putting the Ande on top. Is this a good idea and what connection knot should I use....there's quite a difference in diameter? thanks
  10. thanks Bill....will give it a try and let you know how I did!! Also thanks again for all the help...sure can use it! At least gives us newbies a fighting chance on a potentially tough fishery!!
  11. I see most reports are for the early morning bite. Does anyone fish the evening or night? If so, what set ups? Was thinking of coming up and doing an afternoon/evening outing and then an early morning at Fair Haven. I'm relatively new at this and this forum is great....so much information! Thanks to all of you for sharing your vast knowledge.
  12. I'm relatively new to the salmon trolling scene. Have some shallow water experience but not much in deeper water. Would like to try and get them when they are out deeper. I recently bought a pair of Cannon Easi troll down riggers with telescopic booms that go to 53". At the moment only have a 8 & 10# cannon balls...from reading some of the great info at this site...they are not heavy enough. So my question is how much weight can I put on these riggers and how far out should I extend the booms? To date I've never been deeper than 60 feet.
  13. how deep to you run the balls....say you're marking fish at 60 feet...do you set the balls at 60 or slightly above??
  14. great advice!! sure helps to cut down of the learning curve!! thanks!!
  15. thanks...checked them out.....looks like they would work great!! Nice to be able to access such good "on the water" experience.
  16. are these different from drift socks? Where do you get them? I need to slow my boat down....was thinking of using 5 gal buckets with holes. which is better?
  17. hey guys...thanks for all the great input...I agree...I think these are a bit toooo out of date and have found some refurbished Mag 15's...for the same price...$400 each with swivel bases included. Still a bit more pricey than I'd wanted to spend...I'm only an occasional user..and price of gas may limit that even more. If anyone hears of some manual ones with extendable booms please let me know...thanks!!
  18. I'm looking to upgrade my down riggers from manual to electric. Found a pair of Cannon Digi Troll II for sale. I've used Cannon in the past but was looking for feedback on this model...are they good and what's a good price including the swivel base. thanks.
  19. thanks for the trip Bill....was fun! Look forward to the next time....good luck this weekend!!
  20. I used to fish a 14 with a 25 and depending on the winds could do quite well long lining (200' or so) for salmon and trout. I would go to Fair Haven. At least you always have the bay to fish in if the winds keep you off the lake. You've invested that much effort and money...at least you'll get some fishing in... The bay has many different species! good luck
  21. Hey Bill, you were right...they were in closer...in fact all in the bay! We could find very few marks out to 180 fow... We threw everything in my limited arsenal at them to no avail....caught one very small one that couldn't trip the release.... I should pay closer attention to you captains....tried all depths...was a bit frustrating...but as they say "a bad day's fishing beats a good day at work." give me a call when you and your dad would like to try some wing shooting!!
  22. Bill, Heading up today for a try....sure hope they don't stay that far out! thanks for all the info and great reports this season....sure helps us "weekend" warriors to have a heads up on conditions!! see you next season.....give me a call if you and your dad would like to do some bird hunting!!
  23. Bill, I do love to see their faces.....will never forget Linda's when she saw her first King...a 30#er....the old line from Jaws...."your going to need a bigger boat." Hope the lake and weather settles down for tues/weds....otherwise it's the bay and bass....
  24. Hey Bill, Good to know things are still pretty good out there! Had a good trip up last week and will be back up on Tues/Weds for another go....thanks for all the help!
  25. Monday: Got out onto the water around four pm (didn't think we would with the wind). Had some big but slow rollers, Set up in 60 fow....no sooner put the rod in the holder and bang...off goes a 12# brown. Came on a watermelon NK spoon 50' down. In the next 30 minutes had a "screamer" break off...my bad (knot that was)! Tues am: We weren't able to stay out with with waves just too close for my 16' boat....did some bass fishing in the bay with some luck. Managed to get back on the lake around 4 and washed lures this after dark! Weds am: We were on the water by break of dawn....tried the shallows then went out to 80 fow....again set up down 50 with lots of marks through out the water column....in fairly quick succession caught two 12# kings, both on a green SD with a blue/green fly. Managed to boat a 20# king around 10am on a white/green spoon again down 50 feet. Seemed like quite a few fish being taken with things slowing down around 10 am but all in all a nice fishing trip.
