  1. As Laker John and I were entered in the Charity Fishing Derby on the 20th, we thought as good fishers that a day of 'pre-fishing' would be the answer to getting a fish or two. We travelled from Hay Bay to Huffs Shoal and trolled up and down there with no results. A hour of jigging in that area produced the same results. We headed south down Long Reach and the flotilla of boats jigging at Thompsons Pt, there were at least two dozen, not counting the boats trolling around the yellow marker. We decided to troll to the yellow marker and then up into Hay Bay. We passed Sheldon and his charter of guys laughing and having a good time. The zero result was achieved. We thought we had best get closer to home base and trolled up near Bayview Resort. We started trolling and within five minutes, the flag on the board went back - yipee fish on. I reeled the fish in and John put the net under the fish and it was ours. A quick photo and a rest on the scale and back she went. Setting the rod again, we started the troll and within a 100 yards, the flag bentback on the board - another fish on. John took the rod and set the boat to drift and I put the net under the fish and she was in. Holy Cow!!!!!! All day nothing and a pair in fifteen minutes. Once again the photo taken and the scale was tested and back she went. We called it a day and spent the evening eagerly awaiting the start of the derby on Saturday. After having had the live-well checked, we were back to launch and begin the fishing. Starting at 0700, we had trolled approx 200 yds and the board moved with a fish. Unfortunately, the hook pulled out as I was raising the fish to the net - DARN!!!!!! We trolled in the area for the next several hours and we were able to attract 8 strikes, four were lost and a pair of pike and a pair of walleye were landed. The walleyes were both under 25", so these were our entries in the derby, couldn't attract a 10lb plus, but that's fishing. We weighed our fish and thanks to BayBoy, we got some pictures of the fish as they were released as soon as the weighing was concluded. These were the pair we brought in - one for fifth prize and one for seventh prize. Lots of people fishing but the results are not to write home about, many people drew blanks. We had a great time and are planning for next years derby as we drove back home. Thanks to Les Corby and his volunteers for a Super event. Stay Tuned the soft water isn't over for a while. 2. I am interested in acquiring a Shimano Bantam BM 1500-LC reel. They are no longer manufactured, BUT they are very small and compact and weigh very little. The models available today from ALL reel manufacturers are TOO heavy hold on a small rod all day. PM - Please David Delcloo aka Superdad Kingston
  3. The weather forecast said that Tuesday the 9th was going to be a nice day - did they miss the boat? IT WAS GORGEOUS!!!!! Little wind, lots of sun and big rollers from the south. We (Laker John and Myself) began fishing at 0930 and made several passes at a spot we had success in the past, the water was dirty due to the rollers kicking up the bottome, so we decided to try another piece of water. As we were heading over, we had changed fom spoons to stick baits because if the dirty water. We were setting out the rods and the outside board goes off - Fish ON!!!! I reeled the board and the fish to boat and as it got close Laker John said "you won't beleive what it is!!!!" He slipped the net under the fish and brought it on board - what a surprise........ They say there are no walleyes in the area - well we found one of them!!!!!! This one was 7 lbs on the nose. Picture taken for posterity and the fish returned to spawn. That was the first time I have ever caught a fish out of season in 64 years of fishing.... We were pleased that we had attracted a fish on a Smithwick Rogue, we caught that fish at 1115 and after setting the rods back out and beginning the troll again, I was in the midst of a call to BayBoy when the inside rod went off and Laker John was into a fish. It was approx 1135. He brought the fish to the boat and into the net - our FIRST Brown Trout of the year!!!!! We were happy as pigs in s**t, the day was asuccess - BUT wait there's MORE!!!!!!!!!!! For the next two hours, we trolled up and down and we had three double headers, lost three fish after the strikes and landed a bunch of brownies ranging from 4.75 to 7.75 lbs. We were getting them on a jointed Rapala in a bright orange and on a Spro in Pink and white. Here's a shot of a really nice male that tipped the Rapala Scale at 7.75lbs. The action slowed down and we landed our last trout at 330PM, we continued up and down and called it a day at 500PM, heaing for the launch. Took a shot on land for the record. The days total was 11 fish, one walleye and ten brown trout - what a way to boost your confidence!!!!!! We're counting the days til we can get out again, (weather permitting), we got some different areas we want to check out as we think the fish are all over the place. Stay Tuned
  4. The Weather Network said it was going to a nice day with partly cloudy skies and a temp of 9 degs C, Laker John and I headed west from Kingston on the 401 and the FULL moon was still shining at 0700. That bodes well for a good day of fishing, we said - full moons are the best days. Launching the boat at Shermans and heading toward Thompsons we began to troll toward the west side. We had planned to head east of the ferry, but the south-southwest winds kept us from heading out there. We had reviewed the posted results of the weekend and the best results were posted by Quinte Prince & Desi. We made our way to another area of Long Reach. The wind was blowing straight up the Reach and we decided that to troll slow enough, (this being dictated by the 43 degs F water temp) we would troll up wind. This was good enough to get our speed down to 1 MPH right where we wanted. The main challange was to choose a lure that I thought would work, scanning the boxes and the various colours, I chose a lure that I had never caught a fish on, the Manns Stretch plus 20 in the Blueberry Muffin colourd was the lure of choice. We began the trolling at approx 0950 and hardly ten minutes passed for the first strike. VOILA- a beautiful walleye landed - scales produced and they tipped at 11.75 lbs. The rear hook of the lure had been altered in the spring changing to a Mustad Tripe Grip Treble - what a job it did. There was little point in continuing with an unproductive lure on one line and the second rod was quickly changed to the same Blueberry Muffin. The second rod hadn't been out for 15 minutes and off it went. Laker John found the fish and it slipped into the net. Man O Man, the days a success as the scales tipped at 11.15 lbs The trolling pass continued and at 11 o'clock the board went off again, I reeled in another nice 10.0 lber was weighted and released. We have found the Mother Lode of walleyes - we had three fish in an hour all double digits - lots of smiles and laughing and handshakes. At the end of the trolling pass, we started down-wind and found that the speed was too great, over the side went the trolling bag and as easy as pie the speed dropped back to 1 MPH. We trolled back and forth and after what seemed to be a long time, the planer board showed signs of a fish. Laker John brought this one to the net and the scales showed 10.75. Another Double Digit - HOLY COW!!!!!!!! We hardly had time to eat a sandwich and have a sip of soup. The planer board reacted again at 1310 and I brought a much smaller fish to the net, this one was a mere 8 lbs. We were both pleased at our results after four hours of fishing, but still there was plenty of time left in the day to continue fishing. We had a bit of time until the board went off again and Laker John reeled in another nice walleye at 1445. Another Double Digit - 10.5 lbs. \ We had landed six really nice fish and said we would make one more pass before we headed back to Shermans. At 1510, the trolling reel screamed and I was tied into another fish, not real big, but another nice one. The scales shiowed that this one was 7.0 lbs. We continued the final trolling pass with hopes that another fish would make the total count of eight. Sure enought the board went back and Laker John grabbed the rod and the fish shook its head and the hooks pulled out - Darn!!!!! Oh well that's fishing. We had several hookups like that previously and they too shook free from the lure. The daily count ended at 7 for 12, Three strikes that didn't hook up and a couple that shook free. We headed back to Shermans and pulled the boat and cleared the gear and were on the road back to Kingston by 1630. Lakers John and I had our BEST DAY trolling together ever, we surpassed our record day of Nov 13,2003. I cannot say enough about the ability to slow the boat down and using Precision Trolling got those lures right in front of those fish. At the end of the road home, we both agreed it was a day for our scrapbooks and photo albums. Pplease excuse the lengthy diatribe, but these days only occur once in a full moon. Cheers David aka Superdad
  5. We were out last Friday morning until 1130, when the winds REALLY started to blow - hard to caught bobbing like cork. Cheers
  6. A report of April 2nd fishing. It was going to be a nice day, weatherwise, so Laker John and I headed off to Lake Ontario and a shot at brownie or two.... Launched John's boat and the Merc four stroke started, second pull - great to get underway. We began to fish around 1015 and near the end of the first hour, the outside board went kinda strange and there was a fish there. I was able to land the nice 4.25 lber, even though the fish went thru the landing net. The fsh was caught on an Froggy coloutred Alpena Diamond. The net need some repairs and we trolled onward....... We fished the whole afternoon and couldn't buy another strike. The water temp was on the rise. When we began the temp was at 33.0 degs, kinda cold for Brown Trout, but as the day progressed, the sun shone and that water rose to over 37.2 degs. We were making one last run before heading in around 1700 and decided to make another change of lures, I've been carrying a Lucky Strike Toronto Wabler spoon for over 10 years, that a guy recommended for brown trout and put it on and because it was heavier that the others, put it 40' behind the board and the board out 120'. We hadn't gotten the last rod out and the Lucky Strike had a strike...... Laker John reeled that one in and again the net crumbled, but I was able to make a lacross basket and landed the fish. I thought I should change my lure and suddenly my rod was dancing a bit more than ususal. Another fish had struck while we landed John's fish - Hey a double header!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Landed that one on a Evil Eye Spoon, a clipped fin fish on a and trolled around til 1800 and decided to hit the road back to town. It turned into a great afternoon as the wind died and sun came back and it was quite warm, a nice way to end the day of fishing. Here's a shot of the days catch:
  7. The Big Mama Walleyes are being taken in Adolphus Reach as they enter the BAy of Quinte for the winter. The Fall Walleye Hunt is under way. Will Post to this section of the site Stay Tuned
  8. The Spring Brown trout should going real good, so Laker John and I decided it was time to fish for some Browns. It also afforded me an opportunity to a shake-down trip of Superdad for the 2007 fishing season. We never though for an instance that the day would be a day to remember. The boat had just come out of the shop (MP Marine) and all tuned and ready to go. We headed for Wellington from Bayview at 0430 on Monday and after breakfast at Timmies in Picton, made our way to the launch ramps in Wellington. The ramp next to the LCBO is usable as it has the floating docks chained to the main dock. The other launch ramp past the beach doesn't have the dock in, so we were unable to use it and used the LCBO ramp. Parking up the street was ok. Launched and headed out the little channel and headed for Sandbanks shores. We trolled a quick pass at West Point but had no results. Headed off to another area and began to troll in earnest. We were trolling in 4 feet of water with 75foot leads behind the boards and we were hitting the bottom a lot. We shortened the leads to 60 feet and found success on the outside boards. Then we decided to troll in 6 feet of water and the Fish Gods smiled on us. We fished from 0715 to 1430 and made approx 7 passes along the shore(each taking 1/2 hr to 45 mins) and here's what we did. We landed 14 brown trout and lost two at the net. The biggest was one that I landed at 6.75 lbs, the rest ranged from 15" to 19" (1.5 lbs to 3 lbs). All fish were caught on Alpena Diamonds - you know the ones that were discontinuted about 10 years ago........... Here are a couple shots of the results. And Laker John's Pair The results were outstanding and we couldn't believe we were able to get the fish all day long, we had thought the morning and evening would be the times to be on the water. We have to thanks Capt' Steve from Lake Ontario United for the advice that he had on his Fishing Board. The water temp and trolling speed was perfect. To sum the day up, we had a day like none other (for Brown Trout) and may never experience that sort of a day again.
