  1. 1:I use 30# flea flicker. 2:To get down to those depths(70 - 110) your probably won't be able to set it higher than #1.Remember the higher the number the farther away from the side of the boat it will travel and the shallower it will go. 3:setting the trigger takes a little tinkering. It will kind of depend on the wave action and your depth.I start light and adjust tighter as needed. That being said, once you have it set right it usually only takes an eighth to a quarter turn to adjust for different conditions. Also if you are fishing for salmon on Ontario you can usually set it pretty tight.
  2. What are the rules as far as Juvenile option goes.Thinking about entering.Have two 12 year old sons. Not sure if they would qualify or if I want therm to.If that puts them in a different division then I might just want to pay the $30 for each so they can qualify for the Grand Prize.
  3. Did the shakedown this morning.Fished from 7:30 till about 1:00.Fished the south end.Trolled boards out up the east side.Got nothing. Then put down the riggers.Marked bait and fish deep but no tackers.Came back in and threw out a small rapala when we hit the inlet on our way back to the launch. Then bam.Hit a nice brown about 6lbs about 200 yards into the inlet.Pulled 15 alewives from it's belly. Was a spawned out female with the feed bag on.
  4. Okay.Got my fishlander electric downriggers mounted and wired up this weekend.Problem is that one works and the other doesn't.Bought them used and the guy swears(and I believe him) they both worked when he pulled them off his boat in Sept.Plugged it into the power supply that the one worked in to make sure it wasn't a problem with my wiring. Then I bypassed the up/down switch and wired it straight to the battery and nothing. It has a red light that goes on near the counter and that works fine.So the only thing left to do is to pull out the motor.Hope it the wiring inside and not a burnt out motor(not sure I can find a replacement. So my question is...What am I going to see when I pull the motor out?Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  5. Okay. Finally bought electric downriggers. They are fishlander captain's choice.Problem is they have a regular(extension cord type)2 pronged male power cord. Not sure how to wire them to battery.Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  6. Thanks again Ed.I also run a sub-troll and use wire with dipseys.
  7. Thanks Ed.That was the 1st time we fished that far north.Only fished for a couple of hours.Maybe I'll give it another go.We fished the west side out in about 180'.Maybe if we fished it a little longer in a little shallower. We've been fishing from watkins glen to a couple miles north of the salt plant.Did ok there in the spring but haven't hooked up since.Spoons, flys, dodgers, flashers?
  8. Fished from Starkey Point north a couple of miles. Not a single release again!!Marked a little here and there.Fishing out of Watkins Glen and haven't caught a thing since early June.Figured going farther north might work.Well it didn't.Fished from 6pm till just after 9.Dodging storms along the way.Ran out of gas on the way back to my slip.Thank God for the kicker motor.Made it back in time for fireworks. At least they were worth the trip.Have been fishing around once a week since June without a nibble.Bringing up the warm water gear this coming weekend.Have had enough of wasting gas and time looking for the cold water species.Have fished Cayuga and Ontario for years without a problem.Just can't figure out Seneca's summer pattern.Chalking it up to not getting far enough north(for my egos sake).
  9. I use wire line on my dipsey and thumper rods.Use flea flicker,20# test,on my rigger rods.Helps a bit.
  10. I made this statement a while ago and believe it would go a long way in helping the situation. If you are running that much line I think you need to run a flag or maybe several,1 for each 200' of line out.We all run flags when we have our boards out.And that's just when we are running,at most,100' from our boat I have a hard time assuming EVERYONE is running that kind distance behind them and adjusting for it.I've got a lot of lines in the water too.Way too many to be doing a tight slalom run. I don't mind adjusting for people with copper but too many times I find out when I'm really close and the people are waving there arms and yelling at me.If you are the one running it I believe it is your responsibilty to let everyone know before it becomes an issue.Plus I've noticed SOME(not most) people running it don't have a clue what 600' is.I've had people yelling to me(over the radio)that I am cutting across their copper that they have out 300' when I am over 1000' behind them.
  11. Not in a PZL Koliber 150.Was a nice plane to fly.Had a stick and a bubble canopy that you could open in flight. But the fuel went into the wing at an angle and there was no way to get to it.The best you could do was to drain a little to make sure there was fuel.Other than that you had to trust the fuel gage.
  12. Check out this wesite.On north side of lake.Great people,boat launch,bait shop docks.All in 1 place. http://www.oneidalakefishing.com/
  13. Buying a couple of cowbells.Thinking about attaching them directly to the downrigger ball.Any ideas.Never ran them before.Kind of worry about them tangling up my fishing line. Was also thinking about running them on my third downrigger without a rod attached to that rigger.
  14. LOL isabell.Always an adventure. The time out of Oswego was my own fault.Should have gassed up first. When it happened out of Sodus it was my starter that went.Beat it to a pulp trying to get it to work.Once ran out of gas flying an airplane. The only plane I've flow that you could not physically check the fuel. The flight school I was flying with didn't keep a log book for fuel so the best you could do was shake the wings and listen for it.Luckily I hadn't flown in awhile and decided to do a couple of touch and goes before going off to the practice area.Got abeam of the numbers on my second one when the rps dropped way down and the windmill stopped spinning.Got it down no problem but the pucker factor was a bit high.Either I am a real jinx or really lucky.Walked away each time.
  15. Know how you feel.Once got stuck on Ontario(in Oswego).Storm kicked up.As I'm coming in,along with all other boats,I run out of gas.Now I have to link my kicker(9.9hp)to my main motor and putt my way in.I'm doing about 4mph while everyone else is going gang-busters to get back in.Well we didn't make it.Had to ride it out.Visibility dropped so low that we could not chance getting near the break walls or light house.Should have seen the look on my wife's face when I handed her a life jacket and said to put it on.The prior season I got stranded 4 miles out of Sodus. My old boat with no kicker no radio.Just me and my brother.Winds started to pick up.I swam about 1.5 miles with the boat attached to my waist trying to stay in front of the harbor so that we could hopefully flag someone down.Luckily we got close enough for my walky talky to pick up my wife. She was worried after we were 4 hrs late and walked out to the light house to try and see us.Well she sent out the coast guard and they brought us in.About an hour later we got hit by a nasty, nasty storm.Would have blown us to Canada or used us as a lightning rod.
  16. Ended up not fishing friday after work.Skies didn't look too good.Fished Whitney Point Res. yesterday.Couple small bass and one small walleye.
  17. Oops.I mean busy.Must have been a freudian slip.Am a bit partial to the busty type.
  18. Going to hit the south end today after work.Hope to be on the water around 5:00.Will post when I get back.Unless of course I'm busty cleaning my catch. Then I'll post tomorrow after the bass opener.Think I'm going to go to Oneida for that.
  19. Thanks Ray.Makes me feel a little better. You know how misery loves company.Problem is that I have a slip at the southend.Guess I may need to gas up the boat(ouch)and head north.Looking at it now as a challenge.Good to scratch the brain from time to time anyway.Bridging those synaptic gaps and getting those neurons firing.Like you say "Always learning or never learning."
  20. You read it right Irish.I do usually run my thumper like that. It's usually the bottom of my "V" spread.Wasn't really running it like a thumper.Noticed a couple fish surface while trolling.Wasn't running the thumper in my spread so I decided to take get it out and run it a ways back near the surface.Got a 10,12 & 1# meatball to run with it when I want to go deep.Got all my rods from the fish doctor(capt Ernie)in Oswego.Gave me charts for all weights and dipsey settings.Gives me REAL precise depth with amount of line out. He's pretty much been my teacher for about 5 years now.His son Jeff(now a captain himself)has been a great help lately also.
  21. Thanks Ed.Guess I may have been running a little too deep.Do the "S" turns.change things up when not working.I've been trolling for a while now.Never had this kind of dry spell.Have fished Ontario and Cayuga a lot without any problems.Just having a hard time with this lake.Hoping that once the thermocline sets up fish will get easier to target.Fingers crossed.Usually only get out on Saturdays so I am really at the mercy of the the poke and hope gods.
  22. Ran 2 dipseys,2 downrigger(about 20' from the ball) and a thumper down the chute.Kept the thumper in the top 10' of water 200' back.Ran the dipseys and riggers anywhere from 100-40 ft down.Speed from 2.5 - 1.5 gps speed(haven't got my sub-troll 900 back yet).Started with spin doctors & flashers w/e-chip(green/white)with green and then white jitterflies.Changed to dodgers instead of spin doctors. Then a couple spoons behind flashers with e-chip.
  23. Fished for about an hour Friday around 6pm.Got chased off by lightning.Fished from 12pm-3pm saturday.Nada,nothing,nil,zero,zilch.Marked very few fish.Marked several bait pods.Fished south end, west side from several miles north of salt plant all the way south to watkins glen.Haven't caught a fish in my last 4 trips out on the lake.
  24. Thanks for the reply goin hungry.Personally don't drink much.Fish with the wife and kids.Your right about being out there.Still better than doing yard work.Just so darn frustrating.Especially now that I have a slip on the lake. Will keep plugging away like you said.As far as the cliffs.Thought I would pull my gear up.Hate to have it catch the bottom and slow me down right before impact.
  25. OK.Over the past several years I have had my boat slipped at cayuga lake and lake ontario(oswego).I have never had a problem catching fish. This year we have a slip on the south end of seneca.Except for one good day when we caught 11 pike,we have had next to no success.Had been targeting browns & LL early in the year with limited action. The last few trips we have tried for lakers.Been trolling from watkins glen up past the salt factory then across the lake back south to watkins glen.Have seen some nice bait plumes but only caught 1 laker.Been using flashers and dodgers with spoons and flies along with just spoons.Been trying all different colors.Any help would be much appreciated. Also have yet to find any perch!Water temp on the south end is between 55-60(surface)as of this past weekend.
