  1. Well I my fishfinder cost me close to $2000 and personally I would buy another one if this one ever failed. Staying on this subject. The price of the speed, temp, depth is about $100 less then it's competitor and each probe cost is $50 lower then it's competitor. During the LOTSA presentation I realized that the Smart Troll downrigger probe is not vulnerable to being lost since it is not located anywhere near a termination, while my current rigger probe could be lost if my rigger cable broke.
  2. Don't use it on the high speed scotties, everything else seems fine. Matthew
  3. I was wondering when this question would be asked, it is a very good question and the owner has addressed it. In fact I will post the email I received from the owner. Matthew, Please be advised that I do not plan any Pre-sales. My plan is to put actual stock numbers on the Website. If the product goes out of stock then I will post a realistic eta for it to go back in stock. If someone makes a purchase through the Website, when the product is on back-order, then I will tell them a realistic eta and give them the choice of a full refund or be put on a priority list…those on the priority list will be given preference as the systems come back into stock. We will increase the manpower needed to keep back-orders to a minimum. If need be production can be ramped up to 500 units per month.
  4. The probe is fully encased in epoxy, it is totally durable. For those that don't put the probe in a safe place then yes it will be easy to lose. For example I would put my probe ahead of my dipsy and not behind my dipsy, how often does the line break 10 feet ahead of a dipsy?
  5. There is so much I could write here about ways to get deep but first we need to know where our stuff is. I suggest getting a smarttroll unit to know the depth our stuff is. All of our gear is very speed dependant. At 3mph we are lucky to get our 600' copper deeper then 60' down. So we need to adjust our speed to get the presentation we desire but if we have no clue where our stuff is then we are fishing blind. Once we know how our presentations are reacting we are in control. BTW I have been extremely successful with 3 colors of lead with a torpedo diver ahead of the lead.
  6. A quick Google images search shows there are hundreds of waterproof cases for android handhelds or tablets. March 14 is only 10 days away from the LOTSA seminar when the price will be revealed, from what I am hearing the pricing will not be disappointing.
  7. No need to worry about battery life as the probes have been in use for many years without battery failure. A phone plan is not necessary to use Android tablets or phones.
  8. Well some great comments! Android does not need to be attached to a phone service, it only needs wifi and a bluetooth connection which most units have. If you have a friend getting a new phone you could always buy theirs cheap as long as android is 2.2 or higher. If you want a big screen then Android comes up to a 65" screen. http://www.ardictech.com/index.php/en/about-ardic/news/111-biggest-android-tablet-65-inch The main reason a screen was not part of the smart troll program was to give the user the choice of their own screen, since everyone has different preferences. For me I want a large 20" helm screen but also the ability to use a pocket size screen so I don't have to keep yelling to the helm what the temp or depth is of my baits.
  9. On my boat I have 50khz, 83khz, 200khz and 455khz and found no interference with the smart troll unit. Since the transducer is only recieving signals, other electronics should not be affected. The other reason there is not likely to be interference with fishfinders is that FF transducers point straight down and therefore would not likely receive any signals from the smarttroll probes, Smarttroll transducers point at a 45 degree angle otherwise they will not receive any signals from the probes.
  10. Ran it last year and did not have any issue losing probes but I put them in a safe area of my fishing line. My guess is there will always be lost probes just as there are with the other speed and temp units, except the new probes will be so tiny the litter factor will be a huge improvement. From the rumours I am hearing we will be very happy with the initial cost and replacement costs, once that info has been released.
  11. If you click on each picture then you get detailed information.
  12. I see the company Smart troll is now a sponsor of this website. The website is also now open, smarttroll.com
  13. I am not certain of the exact pricing but my understanding is it will not be the most expensive nor will it be the least expensive speed and temp unit.
  14. The probe is so tiny I don't believe it affects copper that much but probably does a little. When I look at our detailed Torpedo depth charts at torpedo dept at 2mph is dramatically different then at 3mph. Perhaps the same happens with copper.
  15. I have a fishhawk TD, it's a great unit, but you have to retrieve the unit to see where it was. With live speed, temp and depth monitoring copper shows copper drops quite low in the water column when first deployed and takes about 10 minutes before it gets to actual running depth. Not sure how I can decifer that with my TD. I guess you could slide the TD down the line after the copper is in the water for 10 minutes for a general idea of where it's running, at least if travelling in the same direction as the current for an extended period of time.
  16. If you thought your 450 copper was down 90 feet at 3mph and then technology came out that showed the 450 copper was down 45 feet at 3mph, would your catch rate go up with this information?
  17. The new unit is not made by Torpedo. It has been in the works for the past 7 years. I know what it takes for a new company to get off the ground so when I see a new product that is good for the industry, it seems right to do whatever possible to help them. This new product is certainly going to help broaden our understanding as to exactly what is going on sub surface. Since this unit can be placed on other items such as divers, copper etc. and not just downriggers it provides a huge gathering of insight, especially since it is providing live feedback. A downrigger weight (due to the weight) stays in the same position, we have found our divers ( since they are relatively light ) move around in the water column, especially when hit by a current wall. This movement provides very interesting results as I am sure we will witness by many reports this coming fishing season. The new unit that I used this summer was schooling me how to troll effectively ( after 30 years of fishing for Salmon and Trout ) for salmon and trout. The added knowledge helps us to understand how currents play a big part in our ability to produce the most effective bait presentation.
  18. This has been a 7 year project... many are going to be shocked to find our where copper actually runs at.
  19. Forgot to mention the cost will be lower then the lastest speed, depth and temp unit out there and you can run up to 6 probes off the same unit. Also can be used off your or your friends android phone by downloading an APP which means you don't have to look at the drivers console every time you want a reading.
  20. Word has it a new Patent Pending Wireless Speed, Temperature and Depth unit is going to be unveiled at the LOTSA March 14th Meeting and the Grand Rapids Ultimate Fishing show, with a probe that is 1/2" diameter x 4" long. The probe can be used for live readings on leadcore, copper, dipsys, riggers, torpedo's or flatlining with next to zero blowback. Multiple probes can be used at the same time. It is made in the USA
  21. On my boat I have all 4 frequencies. 433 will pick up the thermocline while at high speed and is great in shallow water also provides excellent definition. 200 will pick up the thermocline at trolling speed and is good generally down to about 200 feet provides good definition. 83khz will not pick up the thermocline but will pick up fish down to about 500 feet and is good for fishing the great lakes, 50khz will show the bladder of the fish and will see fish down to 1000 feet.
  22. A new speed and temp unit will be unveiled at the March 14th LOTSA seminar.
  23. Torpedo Wire should be finished in December. Send me a direct email [email protected] and I'll let you know when it is back in stock.
  24. I am from Canada. I am curious if the fact that Obama has done nothing concrete to stop the Asian Carp from reaching the Great Lakes. Will this influence your voting for the next USA President?
  25. Use your drag to let the line out not your thumb.
