Is it me but I have tried slide divers for years and believe a regular diver has always out preformed the slide diver.  I no longer own a single slide diver.

If I understand the chinook diver setup described on this thread (and others) its a different animal. But for slide diver vs regular its all about lead length and each will have its advantage.  Where there is no contest is in not having a sufficient crew (especially solo).  Running a regular diver solo with a long lead is problematic.  Running solo a lot slide divers make divers a reality for me.  I get bit plenty on slide divers.  Originally when in a multi person boat before I realized lead length mattered I learned the difference between a 6 ft lead (and no or minimal bites) and a 12' lead.   With a slide diver I can go out to 25+ which I prefer.

Back to the Chinook diver which I understand to be a really short lead behind the boat, I have to believe that is water clarity dependent.  I fish east and clear water is the norm or at least frequent.  However I like the idea of a choked up short presentation when I know I have color to work with.

  2. I had an 840 and upgraded to the X4 but was being cheap and told myself I didn't need the X4D.  Talking to some people who were telling me how they were able to see the blowback caused by lake currents, speed and ball weight, I regretted it and 2 years after buying the X4 I upgraded. I'm glad I did.   I do really like having the depth.  I really like knowing how much the lake current impacts the blowback.

  3. I did manage to get 400 copper on a Seagate 60 but barely.   I have 200 yards of 40# powerpro and 400 feet of 45# bloodrun copper. I started with 300 yards of powerpro but that wouldn't fly so I undid it and took 100 off.   Originally I had the copper connected to mono with a small spro swivel doing the copper twist and covering with a light coat of epoxy.  However it was so tight that this connection would occasionally hit the level wind so I didn't trust it and went to an Albright knot.  That cleared barely and then later it all settled in a little bit better once used a bit.  I caught a number of kings on it and was happy with the setup.  I considered buying a Tekota but I really wanted to higher retrieve rate.  I think the squeeze was worth it.

  4. Hello all!!!
I bought my starcraft fishmaster 2 years ago, I'm getting ready to add a kicker on this boat. And I want a Tiller for a few different reason. But the question I'm struggling with is.. WILL A TILLER KICKER 9.9 YAMAHA  fit on the back port side.. will the tiller hit the splash wall or be a issue in any way???  PLEASE HELP!!.
ALSO what's the best plate I should use if I can put it right on the boat a not use a bracket..  Thanks in advance all!!!
I have a 2018 with a 9.9 kicker on the port side. Mine does not have the tiller arm. I can tell you that the splash well will interfere with the tiller arm laying out flat. You will likely be able to operate it with the arm folded up but that may not work for you. I attached a pic i have from last winter when i had it stored in a sweet garage i had access to. 5. Regardless of the DEC saying kings are managed for the lake, they will never shut down the SR for the sake of increasing natural reproduction.  That's just the pipe dream of those wanting natural reproduction to make up for the stocking cuts.  You can say "DEC said kings are to be managed for the lake" until you are blue in the face, the reality is that natural reproduction makes it harder for the DEC to manage the lake. We can disagree on cuts or no cuts but from a management perspective natural reproduction is a wildcard.  They can't count on natural reproduction enough to back off and save rearing tank space for other species, but they also know it could blow out one year and a bumper natural reproduction crop could impact baitfish.  Regardless of the economics or the stupidity of the fishing in Pulaski in Sept / Oct, they aren't going to suddenly agree to shut down fishing in a natural reproduction stream in the effort to increase natural reproduction in order to undermine their stocking cuts.  Its possible they may in the future shut down the SR in the event of another drought year as bad as the one a 8 years ago or whenever that was when they struggled to get the minimum egg take.

Bottom line is they think what they are doing is right for the lake.  I fish east.  I don't see piles of bait as described by others claiming full on conspiracy theories....that's what I know.

  6. LOL Bob... So we had volunteers.  It got really difficult dealing with the Marina, so we had folks that live on the river volunteer to host the pens at there personal docks.  This group was all set to raise the steelhead when it came up at the State of Lake that there is no public fishing access to the little salmon river for the steelhead. After a bit of back and forth and I will leave it at that Steve Hurst DEC Director of Fisheries pulled the steelhead from the group.  We tried to ask for Kings and got told NO...  And let me throw this in one more time because I am tired of talking about it... THERE IS NO PEN REARING FOR BROWN TROUT!!!  We could hold them for 24 hours to allow them acclimate and that would be the extent of it.  We were then approached about the Atlantic Salmon and that makes no sense at all from any angle while we are in the middle of King Salmon cuts...  That is very much the short version if you would like more detail please feel free to PM me.
Nope, thanks thats plenty of detail. I wasn't trying to dig at old wounds. I had a 3 min conversation with him when i saw the pen there.

I don't buy into the whole stocking cuts theory at all....
If the DEC was so concerned that the predator /prey ratio was way off... Why were they going to introduce more predators of alewifes into the lake this year?
Here is the story... Pen Rearing fish in general can increase survivability 2:1 for kings and as high as 7:1 for Steelhead.. That is using the science and studies done... So here we have the proposal to Pen rear the Atlantic Salmon that were usually direct stocked... So using the the "Science" , at least twice the number of Atlantic's would survive...and maybe as much as seven times ... Basically more predators being put into a system that is allegedly low on prey ... That doesn't make sense to me so forgive me looking at all the science about predator / prey ratios with a jaundice eye.
I'm glad the guys in the little Salmon River turned down the opportunity at pen rearing Atlantics.Great move until the Alewife "rebounds"and our king stocking numbers return to normal.
Maybe then Lake Trout can be revisited.

Just curious ...and only curious...did they turn down atlantics or whatever would be pen reared?  I was talking with Bob at Salmon Country and from what I understood the Pen thing degraded into not enough help and he just didn't have the manpower to do it. He was telling me how long it took to wire tie the nets to the pen etc.   I don't even remember how it came up, probably because I saw the pen sitting there and asked him.  He was telling me something to the effect that those that might have helped had more interest in other things ie browns than steelhead or others.  I could be off, only asking again out of curiosity.  I realize that volunteer effort is insufficient generally speaking everywhere and usually falls on the shoulders of a very few. Admittedly, my knowledge is piece meal.

Just sent my 2nd E mail to DEC this time regarding the increase in length of an open water steelhead to 25".You have the same problem here as the the 2 steelhead limit proposal when you have a 3 fish in combination rule. You CANNOT SUCCESSFULLY C/R STEELHEAD IN MID SUMMER on the open waters of Lake Ontario !!  If this proposal passes it will result in lots of dead and wasted steelhead floating on LO. Happy seagulls! If they want to help trib fisherman it would make more since to have NO SIZE LIMIT on steelhead on open lake. Instead the rule would be you must keep your first 3 silver fish regardless of size. Obviously the 3 in combination rule we have now would apply. Could be you have 2 steelys and 1 king in your box etc. This would help trib fisherman because there would be far less dead steelhead !!

25" or  to your point...any size limit is stupid.   I had a (memorably) gill hooked bleed fest steelie on the small side this summer that was 23.5".  The only reason I knew that was there was a DEC survey boat.  I had the fish in the box with others but was worried about that one as I came into the inlet as I couldn't recall  what was current reg.   I shake small fish off at the boat side IF workable, non copper etc and seemingly survivable. This guy ate the whole thing deep enough to get every hook on the treble in the gills in a total bleedfest I regretted bringing over the side in my new boat (hence the clear memory).   I'm not a charter, but an obviously dead fish went in the box.  I was pretty sure 21" was the current rule but I did sweat for a moment when I saw the state boat.  I try to play nice but I do hate this game.

If still like to be convinced that this law will actually impact lake guys due to limiting creel limits or impact trib guys increasing return rates. I have yet to see any evidence

So, against my better judgment I'll add this for anyone following this thread...and with full knowledge that I recall you to be a little bit of a sH*t stirrer from other forum(s) at other times.

A significant lake user perspective / concern if nothing else (and which I respect) is a "give an inch take a mile concern".   Way back the limit use to be 5.  Now its 3.  Now add a restriction to steelhead from 3 to 2.  The fully logical question is ….whats next?  You took steelhead to 2....lets go to one...and while we are at it lets take browns from 3 to 2 to …..some day 1.     I get it, it was stated in earlier posts.  Its the lobster being cooked without realizing it by starting in a cold pot and not realizing until its too late that its too hot.  I won't debate this one.  This is the one thing without question I fully understand from the lake fisherman's point of view.

I'll add from the river side, that I see the same in different ways.  Is it this current reg....we'll yes, I saw prior fishery impact from diverted effort in the lake reducing trib results.  Yes it happened.  However I also appreciate the give an inch issue too.  I watched the DSR do this for years.  I went from supporter to at best neutral to negative.  I had a season pass for 23 years and bailed on it this past year.  You can only piss on my back and tell me its raining for so long.

I don't love coolers full of fish but I do understand the perspective.  lake guys have historically put in effort to the fishery as a whole.  River guys...nope....other than those few that play both sides and those are a select few charter guys (mostly).

So we are arguing that their day would be ruined because they could only keep 10 steelhead not 15?

That wouldn't even be a legal limit of steelhead under the proposed regulation.

Again after all this debate I'm sticking by that this will have 0 impact on lake fishing or tribs because people hardly ever limit out on steelhead on the lake anyway

Whos arguing.  I was only replying to your comment that you were still waiting for pictures of limits (or near limits) of steelhead.  Limits happen.  If you target it happens....some places more than others.  If you want your limit take it.   Don't act like it never happens.

That is your opinion and I respect that. You can't tell clients on a 6 hr trip that we are going to pull our spread and move, maybe find fish maybe not, because Fat Trout can't see you boxing your limit of Steelhead. 9+ boxes of Browns, Salmon or Lakers is OK? Why?

Your opinion is yours and that's fine.  I'm not some new guy who doesn't understand about boxes of 9+ other kinds of fish.   I've fished this lake for 30+ years, I know exactly what comes in to port out of sight in white rectangles. More power to those that have good day(s) I don't care, and I personally think TU should go F themselves and stay out of this fishery. However I did run a drift boat from 95' to 2005' and saw exactly what redirected effort did to steelhead in the tribs.    The thing that pisses me off in this thread isn't what we keep its the entitled attitude that we fish for no other reason than to push meat through a grinder in high volume.

Steelhead released during the summer and early fall and die, while people attempt to get their third fish will benefit no one.

At the point this becomes a problem for a charter and someone is  looking for a 3rd fish for each client they are already loading up on steelhead primarily if not exclusively and the other options in that location aren't panning out.  Move or change tactics.  I fish  both sides and have done so for a long time, lake mostly in recent years.  I see both sides and have no problem with taking limits and full boxes daily but I'll never see the need for a box of 9+ steelhead on a single trip.

Worst thread I've seen on this forum.  The smash-em in the head with a bat comment on page 1 really took the cake.

  13. More expensive but I've been running the cannon digi troll 10's for 5 seasons.  I really like the soft stop and also the adjustable down speed.   I also have an older Scotty 1106 rigger that I'm going to put down the center as my occasional use 3rd rigger.  I've used (older) scottys before and have no complaints other than their known operational differences.

Yeah, I ran into the same thing with the Sheraton when I tried to book a room. WTF?  Ended up booking at Quality Hotel instead. Doesn't have a great rating but was about $70 a night total, and I don't plan on spending a lot of time in the room anyway. Don't forget to add the taxes to that price from Sheraton too.

Ive stayed at the quality inn on first street before and will again this year.  it was just fine, as you said, I'm not there to stay in the room anyway.

Yessir..... The DEC did say that the lake was managed for salmon. Protect the school for natural reproduction and stocking efforts. What is right is right...

So I can't help but ask the question.  If they did adjust regs to lean toward protecting / improving the salmon return to the hatchery (since the DEC says salmon should be managed for the lake), would the lake community be more accepting of increased regs on steelhead which the DEC has said should be managed for the tributaries?   I've fished both sides for years and lean lake currently.  In seeing the other post about proposed steelhead restrictions and negative feel there I'm curious if we all would be more willing to give on the one to get the other.  While it probably wouldn't happen.  I do agree with the DEC approach.  (salmon lake/ steelhead tribs).
