  1. Cool drawing, and I'm an engineer too so I can appreciate it.  My problem is I've been fishing the lake so long that I know you almost never get to troll that straight in a small boat so when you start crab walking to one side due to the wind or being in a turn a rigger fish goes under 2 divers or the inside diver goes under the outside diver and copper.....and then the fun really begins ;)  I tend to go with less is more.

  2. I wont disagree with your frustration but the reality is there is a lot more tech in newer motors. I imagine with lets say a 25yo motor shops are struggling to have people who handle both old tech and new. I had the same problem with a 2003 25hp but that was in 2008...fuel pump couldnt handle the ethanol that became more prevalent. Diaphragm got stiff. Diagnosed pretty quickly as that was a common problem at the time. Shops that cant handle the old should turn away the work or better frame the expectations.

Can someone please tell me what is comfortably fishable out of Oswego . I know a south wind is good to go . I have a 21 foot crestliner commander. It handles water well but gets pushed around easy . I will always have my two young sons with me as well . I feel like I wasted a day today by watching the wind forecast. West a 6 mph at 10 am today . I'm a weekend warrior with a boat payment I need to feel good about. So I need to make as many trips as possible. Got beat up pretty good out of Sodius point last month on a west wind . Kid barfing over the side . Lol thanks to all . I don't trust the noaa forecast it always seems wrong

Todays morning forecast always was south or southwest 5-10 or less than 10. Other than light and variable thats the best you are gonna see. The weatherman lies a lot though so sometimes you either have to bail or make the best of it with a backup plan. Like fishing much close to shore and shallower than you wanted or switching to bass even for the same reason. Even a south wind will make chop and get rough if you are far enough out. I run a 20' aluminum and have to change my thinking all the time after getting on the lake. The oswego and other weather bouys are always good for current info.

There are no universal rules. When wind comes off a shoreline or is blocked by a point etc that can help but all bets are off once you get a few miles out. Even a 10mph wind will give you a solid chop. If you have sensitive young kids....keep as tight to the shore the wind comes off of as you can.   I should add that if they are predicting W or NW or NE  its almost always going to be a potential problem.  There is usually no such thing as a "light" West or NW wind and when it is light it is often after being heavy for a while so it might have residual waves.

  4. Huron was a plankton problem. The overstocking/ too much natural reproduction problem only sped up an inevitable crash.
Inevitable true but the estimated natural reproduction numbers and rate of increase were astounding. I attributed that to the more northern location of streams, presumably lower stream temps at key times of the year. Regardless....natural reproduction is both a blessing and a curse depending on the prey fish populations. Going from zero one year to bumper crop the next makes it hard to manage

  5. Not had much success on Meat, any pics of how you are rigging them?
    Any tricks I should know.
    Any help is appreciated.
    thanks,
    Dan
Check out videos on you tube. Im sure there are a bunch. Use cut bait as alternate search. If you're are just starting your understanding pictures and video should help a lot.

  6. Also had this happen, which continues my incredibly bad luck with tackle. Salmon broken off an NBK spoon at the swivel. This is a true story and the second time it’s happened on two seperate batches of swivels.

I dont use that style anymore because of that potential. I had too many times where i went to change a lure and it was unclipped but i swear i had done it

Looks like a scam but  is it ? I need a new outboard and found this site, any info much appreciated.
Much sarcasm in my brain but I'll just go with....if it looks too good to be true...it is. There are places that discount motors...but half off? You have to ask yourself why. Plus. Unless its a small motor or you are fully capable of rigging a large outboard yourself good luck getting a good marine shop to rig and deal with your sale motor in the way you would want. Good luck.

  8. I towed someone thinking it was "my turn".   I was an 18' he was a 23' or so with an outdrive and couldn't steer to save his ass.  All went well but I added some grey hairs coming in the inlet and going up the river and won't do that again.  I was fortunate to have 2 on board with me to assist, but don't always.  The boat I towed was poorly maintained IMO and in retrospect I'm aggravated about it.

I have Boat US myself, all should have a contingency.  I run a 20' boat now and I'm not unwilling to help but I'm going to think it through in a different if there is a next time including making a call to the CG vs towing.  My boat/crew safety and potential damage / injury to others is primary.    I feel I was lucky nothing bad happened in retrospect.

What knot do you recommend to join 50Lb to 25lb mono. I tried a albright knot but it would get caught up in the guide on a daiwa 47 reel guide.

#10 spro swivel or surgeons knot if you really need mono to mono.  I used the surgeons knot when I fly fished saltwater.  never failed.  Trolling I do the spros.  Granted I'm fishing 30# flea flicker line not 50 #.  my flea flicker knots to spro make it through my 47's and 57 diawas no problem.

  10. Where do you get 30# flouro? I’ve looked everywhere. I live in Mexico.
I just bought a spool of it a couple weeks ago from either fat Nancy's or all season sports If not there I would think gander outdoors down in Cicero. If I were you I would just run your main line straight to the flasher I run leaders mostly because I'm running flea flicker 30 lb for main line and it's almost a white color

  11. We still going with it is the plan that is to blame?
Well id like some answers on why they cut flows so drastically in January when they were already 8" or so above average then continued that until it was too late to do anything because if the Ottawa river. Look at the ijc site and the charts of the last 3 years. That 8" is a would make a big difference....hell 4" lower would be a workd of difference. Thats why i blame plan 2014

  12. I don't know Scott but I know he was speaking from experience and doesn't own you anything and definitely isn't sticking out his chest at your expense.  He has made his mark and isn't trying to improve it by trashing you.  Sure you can run charters...and more power to you.  I'm not old and I'm not young but I've been at this game a loooong time.  All information is good....even the "bad" information doing anything that might restrict your ability to get information is foolish.  Just take it in.  I don't know you and I'm not for or against you.   I get a LOT of information by staying neutral.  Do I dislike certain people, captains etc.  Sure.  But I keep that to myself and the older I get the more I let it go anyway.

  13. Well, I found the leak tonight. My dumb a** drilled a 3/16 inch hole through the boat when I riveted the floor down. I put a patch of jb water weld over it for bow and its holding. Now I've gotta find a more permanent fix. It's near the back of the boat so shouldn't take any pounding from waves. Atleast I found it, all though I am not happy with myself right now haha. I've got a buddy with a welding shop. Maybe he can patch it
Just put a quarter inch screw in it with sealant

  14. I seriously hope that the difference is due to better manufacturing processes resulting in a thinner diameter product, not some profit driven mantra, particularly for Seaguar. Take graphite. Today's rods can be made using nano-resin systems rolled under extreme pressures that allow them to be virtually weightless, yet stiff and strong. But these high-tech blanks cost an arm and a leg, even though there's less material.

Is anybody on here in the business and can comment on whether leader materials have evolved?
From an engineering perspective. When the technology and manufacturing reliability becomes better and more repeatable the factor of safety can go down. That saves money. Its the same product just not as overbuilt. As far as line goes they are all pushing thinner is better so it all goes hand in hand.

Bottom line you always have to evaluate your gear and tactics. Experience is good but if you keep your brain stubbornly stuck in a mindset from 20 yrs ago you may have problems

  15. We are headed up to lake O Thursday and going to be staying on North Sandy Pond.  This is our first time fishing this area an would like to reach out to the LOC for any advise for newbies to this part of the lake.  We have fished out of Oswego in the past, so we are not newbies to the lake.  Any advice that you could give would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!
Assuming your fishing the main lake, for safety sake watch out for debris in the lake. I'd run slower than you might normally go. Theres a lot of big stuff washed out into open water with the flood

    I use 17#Stren.

This is what I use for my 25 ft tippet from my 30 # to the swivel. No problems at all

I use 8# vanish on my Crankbait  spinning rod ,no problems .

I use the same 17#  for the bait heads . It breaks just before or at the baithead .

4 breaks in 2 weekends and lost 3 bait heads . Never considered it might be A biteoff as I have had to ta ke the hook out of the throat of a few fish and maybe they use the head as leverage . No crimps .

I don't think it can take the shock in that

    4 ft section   .

I tie a Snell knot and yes,  I take my time tying the knot . And wet it .

All I know is I fish a lot , more than most

And catch a lot of big fish on 4# mono .

When I use Flouro as tippet material .  , I have problems .be it this , fly fishing tippet.   Float / jig ,  or braid tippet for bass.

I rarely break off trolling .

I am going to try the Blue label and tie some 20#  mono and compare .

Flouro all has the same properties , which are all documented in various tests .

Stren Vanish....interesting.  I have a friend who learned the hard way.  We joke about his experiment with stren Vanish...….It makes your fish "vanish" is the line I came up with for him.   he thought it was great....4 times the line for the same price.  I told him he'd regret it.  He did.

In all seriousness and to try to help you.     I run 30# leader on my clean bait heads.  40# on my bait heads with twinkies.  20# with spoon lines or 15# with spoon lines if its mixed fishing (not just salmon) and a softer rod.  As you mentioned in one of your posts, the only reason to use fluoro is its invisible.  So take advantage of that and beef up!

River fishing - Drennan has a harder surface than the seguar.    I caught 4 kings on 8# Drennan trolling with brown trout gear this spring .
