  1. Doesn’t anyone read anything anymore?  We are in the midst of a three years clipped coho study, that is why they want the heads, as many of the clipped fish also had coded wire tags. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/112942.html
They did a full three year king salmon study when they first bought the trailer.  The results of this study were published years ago.
From the 2015 SOL Summery: (http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/fish_marine_pdf/lorpt15.pdf)  Also the 2014 study, section 3. (http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/fish_marine_pdf/lorpt14.pdf)
“In 2008, the DEC purchased an automated fish marking trailer (AutoFish) capable of adiposeclipping and/or applying coded wire tags (CWTs) to salmon and trout automatically at a high rate of speed and accuracy. From 2008-2011, DEC and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry “mass-marked” all stocked Chinook salmon with an adipose fin clip in Lake Ontario to determine the relative contributions of wild and hatchery stocked Chinook salmon to the fishery.  To evaluate the relative performance of pen-reared and traditional, shore-stocked Chinook salmon, DEC marked sub-samples of Chinooks stocked at pen-rearing sites with CWTs in 2010, 2011, and 2013 (Section 3).
For the four year classes studied to determine the relative contribution of wild Chinook to the fishery (2008-2011 year classes), percentages of wild Chinook salmon in Lake Ontario varied by year class, age, and among regions from 2009-2015, but overall wild Chinook were an important component of the Lake Ontario fishery averaging 47% of the age 2-and age-3 lake harvest. The percentages of wild Chinook salmon in New York tributaries also varied among regions from 2009-2015 with percentages of age 2-3 wild salmon averaging 7.5% in western region tributaries, 18% in eastern region tributaries, and 58% in the Salmon River. “
Steelhead have not been done at all, so I would hope they would use the technology to evaluate that population before getting redundant with the Kings
I might actually read your posts if they didnt always start out as condescending

  2. That is the plan. They will clip or chip for a three year period I believe.
I fish the river and lake and i can say that 2012 (if i remember the year right) was fascinating with the clipped salmon and what we saw when on clipped vs non clipped. I hav wished every year since that they kept that up. What showed up when wasnt any kind of 50/50 40/60 even 30/70 mix....it was stark contrast. Id love to gage volume of each year to year.

  3. I think I'm going lowrance carbon 9, mostly due to size compared to the Helix, they are pretty big for the same screen. My next question is get a factory transducer or an Airmar, don't need side scan but I guess it nice to have. Most fishing ontario trolling, erie trolling, casting and jigging

I just bought an hds 9 carbon with total scan transducer for 1699 as they are clearing them out. I wanted to go airmar but saw just enough online commentary expressing difficulty to make me decide to go with the total scan and dip a toe i to the airmar at another time.

Thanks for the info, are there any shallow areas ? sandbars or hidden boulders ? or spots that have 10' of water then all of a sudden you are in 2' ?

Generally no 10' to 2' scenarios, but water level, size and draft depth of your boat and how close you are going to grind yourself along the shore will make this a tougher question to answer.   I can generally say there are two areas to consider.   1) to the right of the boat launch inlet (when going out).  There are pin bouys there (usually) marking high rocks....how high I'm not sure....I avoid them (haha).  Also, I understand Catfish creek (if you use that inlet) is funky and has some sudden shallow stuff right in by the mouth.  I don't use that place so I can't say fully.  otherwise you are fine.  As good practice, if you are going to be right along the beach don't run on plane.  You can easily move just a little offshore and run at speed there going to-from Mexico point.

  8. Hello FT,
I have the Smoker Craft 15ft DLX. I see in the picts the gas tank is in some sort of a container. What did you find that the tank fits into? it really looks like it was made for it and I'd like to find something like that for mine.
    Thanks for any info.

Its just a milk crate actually. It fits the can nicely and let me mount a filter on the side and pick the whole thing out easily.

Just so you know the system is not set up on the Great Lakes for this to work yet. I keep reading that lack of funds in the fed system have kept it from happening for us.

    Are you sure about that?

I'm not going to proclaim to be an expert but with 5 min of google searching I didn't find anything saying the MMSI #'s weren't used in certain Geographies.  I did find info via coast guard / homeland security that seemed to indicate that coverage via the Rescue 21 Distress system appears to have been completed as of October last year and to include the coastal US portion of Lake Ontario in the ninth district called "sector buffalo" .  I'm taking it that it includes your direct info via your MMSI #....but admittedly I'm not an expert.

With good fun intended and having fished Lake O and the rivers for quite a while.....I'd bet my house its a coho ;)   But hey, thats why fishing reports are fun!  And to the OP....I'm sure it was a fun fish and looks to be over the 25" for an atlantic so enjoy either way!

Great job by the rescue boats. My question is how do these boats go down so fast, don't they half to maintain level float. Don't mean to sound ignorant. I was out there that evening with a 16 when the lake layed down for a few hrs. Had no idea what had happened till I heard at the launch. Going home early if it's it's bad tomorrow morning.

Floatation foam may keep the boat from going down but it can also become REALLY tippy with a lot of water in the bilge so you capsize if you have pitching wavy conditions.  This is expecially true of a small boat that takes on a crapload of water which now is all on the deck and not in the bilge.  The center of gravity goes way high and it rolls in what are surely very wavy and pitching conditions.    The scary part about that scenario is it will happen really fast.  I keep my life jackets on deck on the sides in cargo netting for that reason

  13. For anyone reading this thread that wouldn't otherwise think of it.   Having your bilge pump tied to a float switch is a must!  You don't have to keep your boat in the water to need this.  Its an early warning to problem.

Separately, but related.  I towed a 24' boat with my 18' boat last year.  He was broken down and didn't have radio or cell phone to get out of trouble.  Communication is a must.  I have a VHF on my 18' tied to my GPS chartplotter which has an emergency button that gives the CG my location, indentification and contact names of family IF activated.  VHF may seem less valuable these days with cell phones, but its still a good emergency tool for big water....and Lake O classifies for sure. I always leave with sufficient cell phone battery charge.

Its great that people can and do help and I surely will.  However you have to plan like there is no help from others and consider that you may be putting others in harms way if you are unprepared.
