Good fishing this year brings new boaters some of which dont have the scars on their back reminding them how this lake can be. I don't consider myself smarter.....ok perhaps a little lol....rather i just really remember the lessons learned. And i remember them WELL

Rented a place at jelly stone. They told us no boat trailers allowed. I am looking for a place to park my boat and trailer this sat. And Sunday night . Or a safe marina close .Pm me

Not even in the big parking area they have across the street from their entrance or the huge field they have in the lower level? Thats comical. I guess the new owners took a page out of the book from the old owners about not being fisherman friendly. Too bad

Contact Salmon Country Marina.  They are just up the road toward the Mexico launch.  I have a camper there.  I would consider it very safe.

  3. While I really like this boat, I'm  upgrading in size.  I'm looking for $20,500 for the boat as described. Currently located in Mexico NY.  PM if interested.

    Here are some details

    - Always run with Ethanol free fuel

    - Always fully tarp covered and dry, rarely fished in the rain and dried before covering.

    - All fluids and filters changed each year with yamaha brand

    - Came with a fishermans top with front glass, mooring cover and snap in carpet (each of those not used much if at all).

    Items I added:

    - 2' of Cisco systems track in the back on each side

    - Yamaha VTS trolling switch allowing RPM adjustment in 50RPM increments.

    - 4 rod holder in the front and one in the rear

    - Trailer Mods to aid in solo launching / retrieving

    - cargo netting along the port and starboard side to free up floor storage from life vests etc.

    - Cranking battery was replaced with a group 29 and a group 27 was added, along with perko 1-2-all switch

    - 3 bank charger covers the main cranking and (2) TM batteries up front

    - 1 bank charger covers the group 27 battery on the port side rear

I have transom mounting provisions (stern savers)  for fish hawk, Fish finder and Smart troll.  I currently run an fish  hawk X4D, lowrance HDS7, VHF radio with antenna and smart troll but would plan to remove these but could leave some or all of these for an added cost.   I run electric down riggers on the track but will be removing those.  The trolling motor up front will be removed as well, but mounting plates, connection provisions and batteries would stay.

  4. You absolutely need a tandem with brakes on that boat.  The only exception would be if you are just going a short distance to the ramp and thats it.  Even then, as already commented, its dangerous if you don't have enough tounge weight.  I learned a long time ago I want more trailer than I need and definitely not less than I need.

You guys gave a lot of positives on this, I’m going to go bow mount, now I just need to decide 24 or 36 and manufacture. Having 24v now with my batteries stowed nice helps, but you know how we all are, bigger is better!

I'd say go with the 24V.  I'm running my 18' boat with a pair of 24 series batteries.  They have been fine.  72" shaft or your wasting your time.   Even then however as some folks have said, you get over 2' ers going into it and yeah its not the best.  However there's a certain point where with a smaller boat (ie < 20') you're having trouble steering with > 2'ers going into it anyway.   For those marginal occations I accept the bow mount is limited.  For the size of boat it really does provide added functionality.

For those who mentioned the lift asssist.  Yeah that sounds like it sucks.  My Terrova is a 2015.  Locks in like a champ and is awesome.

  6. I have a Terrova 80 24V with 72" shaft on an 18 Pro starweld.  Great setup.  I've run 8 hours without issues on batteries.  I only have to put it at 3 to 4 or 4.5 on the power scale.  I have the remote clipped to my waist.  I only use the Terrova for direction.  I mainly adjust with the gas motor and put in the yamaha VTS switch to help adjust that as I'm not running a kicker.  I'll pump up or down the Terrova a little to get in between speeds when the adjustment in the gas motor is to much or too little.  I couldn't care less if it was connected to my fishfinder.   Another key thing I like when I'm trolling for kings is I when I have a king close to net (either solo or with someone) I can take the main motor out of gear and have the full back end open without fear of prop or something else.  I'll pump up the trolling motor a little more and all is well. I have the back or sides at my option.   My trolling spread stays intact but there is no issue working directly out of the back

  7. I was starting to feel like a very  stupid person who made a huge mistake while reading this thread since I purchased new.  Having a 6 year warranty on everything in the boat and having a lifetime warranty on the hull were well worth the price to me.    I have purchased a used before and regretted it.    I could care less about depreciation, this will be my last boat and when I'm done with it someone else will get a nice boat at a fair price.
Love your name. Im eyeing a NEW one of those right now.

  8. I watched a bunch of radar shots from that rain.  A lot of the heavy stuff was on the lower half of the river it seemed and not as much up toward the upper or lower reservoirs..  The Pineville gauge went up but not that much....150 cfs or so.  The river clears really fast unless you get the upper tributaries pumping mud and flowing into the reservoirs like that.    A number of years ago the upper res. took a 5 inch rain hit in july overnight on a moderately full reservoir  and the river went up to 5000 cfs (normally 185 in summer).

Fat Trout, Do you have any problems with the boat rocking at the dock setting of the motion sensor light? It sounds like a great idea.

Not an easy yes unfortunately.  That's a trial and error thing.   The motion sensor beam on the ones I bought is pretty narrow.   Potentially one on the doc pointing at the dock and One in the cabin pointing inside the cabin which then wouldn't go off if rocking.  my boat is on a trailer so my issues are different.

A little late but for piece of mind in the future, they make battery powered led spot lights with motion sensor that are dirt cheap. 2 of those and a sign that says, smile your on camera might make someone think twice. I have one at my front door it runs for about a year on 3 d cells and is 140 lumens

  11. Out of Fairhaven in deep water. Took a white/green dot skinny with white/green fly on 300' copper.
Fish has a second lower jaw w/teeth! Looks like second gill plate partially grew in.
There was a hole between the two jaws inside the mouth(s)
Fly was in upper jaw and hook actually was stuck in the upper part of the lower. I cut the leader so I didnt have to try and push hook the through the hole and out the upper mouth.
Anybody ever seen one like it?
I was gonna keep it but it was kicking real strong so I released it.IMG_1180.thumb.JPG.83685acdf406c49cbfdfa84d7e556177.JPG

This is also my first year on lake ontario and knew nothing about this kind of fishing untill i reached out for help back in april.  I am limited in gear and knowledge but ive been running 4 riggers with two rods on each.  One straight spoon and flasher fly on other rod for each rigger.  Ive been hitting them in 140FOw between 50-90ft down so i stack a spoon and fly every ten ft where im marking fish and it seens to work for me.  But i am a rookie with limited knowledge.  Lol.

We have been fortunate this year that the temp and fish have not gone deep like they usually do.  You may  have a nice wide boat which def. helps but that spread might cause problems if you fishing them all below 100ft.  or as far as 150ft of cable or more if the temp goes really deep.    I have a smaller boat now but when I ran a 4 rigger spread on a bigger boat deeper than 75 ft it was flashers on the outside spoons on the inside and I didn't send an outside flasher past the nearest inside spoon rigger without popping the spoon of the inside rigger first.    The currents can create havoc with deep lines.    I picked apart too many balls of fuzz.  I started going by those rules and it generally works.

Could run a slide diver to allow for a longer lead to increase stealth in your spread. On our boat we run a wire slide diver. Take the wire and create a surgeons loop or a non-slip loop knot at the end and crimp the tag end to main line, loop it into a barrel swivel (barrel swivel needs to be big enough to withstand the pressure while trolling but small enough to fit through the line guide on the reel). Then attach a piece of 45-50lb mono ~50ft long. Put the slide diver on along with rubber or plastic tubing to be placed in the release to not allow fraying from the diver sliding. Place a bead between the diver and end of the mono. Now here are the options... can put either another barrel swivel on and attach an ~5ft piece of 20lb florocarbon to a snap swivel... or at the end of the mono attach a snap swivel then your flasher/meat set up. This allows you to run a longer lead behind the diver without having to run a long leader and I think gives more stealth to the presentation.

This is what I do running solo.

With a dipsy I didn't catch crap until I ran a long lead.  I wouldn't cut it down.  I ran minimum 9' lead with straight DD regardless of what was on it.

Dont know what kind of boat you have or if this would work for you, but this could be another option.  I have a 19' deep vee with

a MotorGuide xi 5 36 v. trolling motor on the bow.  It will hold a heading, hold a set speed, and even record a track that it will follow later, even in wind and waves. I use it just to steer and use my 9.9 kicker for propulsion.   Batteries last 8 to 10 hrs.  Minn Kota makes several motors that would work too

I do the same.  Minn Kota Terrova 72" shaft with Ipilot.  I use it as autopilot and main motor as primary thrust keeping it pointed straight.  It works great in up to 2'ers or slightly better.  Main motor is a 115 yamaha.  I installed the VTS switch so I can adjust speed in 50 rpm intervals up to a certain point.  Above that point I can still adjust with the main throttle and some more out of the trolling motor.   Aside from the autopilot it allows me to use it as a straight trolling motor if I'm not deep water trolling.

I might have to switch back to MC rockets, I went through 10 baits Saturday and that's me just running 6 lines. I'm sure you guys on bigger boats running more lines easily use that much if not more in a day. Any place I can save a few bucks makes a difference, especially when it's already a 3hr round trip just to get to the lake.

Well if all 10 took fish I would think its OK .   Actually guys tend to run less rods than years ago.  Less can be more as far as gear in the water spooking fish and also avoiding tangles etc.  I run an 18' boat and I'm a 4 rod max for salmon (for me).   Of that its a mix of spoons, flasher /fly and baits with max 2 baits.   I feel I do just as well if not better than with more rods.  certainly less tangles and chaos with a fish on.
