  1. You are over thinking it. I fish solo most of the time and netting is the hardest part of it. You're going to make mistakes, but you get to laugh about what you did after the pictures are taken, and setting up for the next one is done. When that fish is in the net, you can relax and think about how to do it better the next time. When you do hook up, give your son all the room in the back of the boat, and encourage him with all the stuff he's doing right. You're going to be as excited as he is, so helping him along with encouragement is a big thing. Being prepared is another. Keep your net in the holder until you really need it. Kings have a tendency to take off near the boat, especially when a net comes near them, so don't be in a rush to get him in the net. If you hand line, make sure your wearing a glove. The line will cut thru your skin like a knife if he decides to make another run.  I use those yellow sticky gloves, they also help with holding the rod.  If you lose him, so what, there's plenty more fish in the pond, and it's a lesson that it's fishing, not catching, and losing a fish is part of it. I wish you luck on your trip. I fished a few times with a friends' son, and let him fight away while having as much fun watching him as he was having. I still keep the pictures on my phone of that 1st fish he put in the cooler. Later this season my son and grandson are flying in from Cal. just for a guy fishing trip that I'm going to have plenty of memories of, and hopefully I'll have another 1st fish picture to add to the other. Good luck fishing.

i just bought a place 20 minutes further away from the big lake and was feeling a little disappointed with a longer drive. when i read someone has a 3 1/2 hr drive to fish lake Ontario i cringe just thinking about that drive . it just goes to show how much revenue salmon fishing brings to New York .  i take granted of living in central New York . IMO Oswego is a good port with all the conveniences it has to offer . the only bad thing i heard about the port and its been years since i was told that it is / was a night time tackle shop . i have stayed there a few times during the loc derby and its patrolled by a guy in a truck all night long , so i thinking problem solved , i never had any problem when i was there ....Good luck this season with your new boat . i can tell your hooked into fishing lake Ontario all ready ...

I run 5 hrs. from Ct every week, store my boat there and have a seasonal campsite.  I'm up at least 3 days every week during the season weather permitting.  And I happen to live 40 minutes from the Sound, and have only fished it a handful of times in my lifetime.

I tend to use the damaged ones regardless of their names. If they are damaged, they have been hit and they will probably get hit again.

I agree. I have too many flies on board to remember the names, but I tend to remember the ones that get hit consistently and use them the most. If they don't produce, I'll switch them over to the other side rigger before I completely go to a different one, and go back to them for the next day.

Loosing a laker at any time is a blessing, don't have to handle their slimy crap spraying stinky AZZ, & don't have to clean off the boat!

Count yourself as fortunate when you lose it.

  5. I have them, bought a set used off Craigslist. They've been very good to me for almost 10 years now, and who knows how old they were before I bought them. I remember when I went to Screwy Louie's to pick up some heavier balls 2 years ago, the 1st thing he asked me was what kind of downriggers I had.  I was looking at the 16#  torpedos and he told me the Scotties would have no problem bringing them up, and he was right. The only thing that has gone wrong with them in the time I've had them was 1 of the mechanical counters broke while I was out once, again, Screwy Louie's had the part on the shelf, so if you need something it's readily available.

I think if read carefully he said he already has an X4D display and probeand wanted to know if he could use his existing transducer with it on this boat. I believe shawn393 answered it correctly.

Right, and the X4D Display and X4D probe can be used with the X4 wiring and X4 transducer.

You need a new Probe and Display . Might be better  buying a new unit and selling this one .

That's what I did when I switched. The new owner got everything new but the X4 screen and the probe
