  1. 711skwerlz: what's your thought on the speed of those riggers?
  2. Great report! Glad to hear the browns are still in the area. We have had a great spring chasing them around and now I just might have to give it one more shot before switching over to other species. Good luch this weekend with your son!
  3. Spend 4 hours with my 7 year old today on Owasco which was only our second time on the lake and first in 2 years. We went with the intentions of targeting Pike and boy did they cooperate on the north end. Ended up getting hit 15 times in the 4 hours and landed 6 of them. They were all nice ones too averaging 26 inches. A few months ago they would have been nice fat fish but as post spawners they were lacking any girth. Still a blast to catch though. Everything came in 12-15 foot of water of the west shore in the north end and the hot bait was a perch colored live action crankbait. Unfortunately the 3 nicest fish of the day 6, 8-ish, and 10+ lbs all came off at the boat before I could get them in the net. What made it nice too was when the pike slowed down the panfish heated up and kept a very happy 7 year old entertained til it was time to go. Now its time for a cold beer!
  4. Well I have to admit that I have always stayed current on the newer trends in fishing but totally dismissed the braided line when it got hot a few years ago. Now I think I'm ready to give it a try but I have no idea where to start. Can someone suggest a good all around braided line that I can try for Bass/Pike/Walleye fishing this year? I figure its worth a try to rig up another rod and reel with this stuff and see what all the fuss is about. Thanks in advance and happy fishing!
  5. great to see that the action is still hot on the bay. What depth/temp were you fishing in?
  6. What an awesome day! I played hooky and launched at mexico bay with minimal results. 1/1 with an 8 lb brown. Congrats! [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  7. I've never really had much luck in Black River Bay but I heard they were getting into them there.
  8. Im going to be playing Hookey on Thursday since it looks like it's going to be beautiful. I was considering Walleyes on Oneida but after reading your post it looks like it's a Brownie day for me in the morning. Congrats! [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  9. Any luck in the field Kevin? I skipped the birds because of the nice weather. I plan on hitting the turkeys next weekend. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

Did a good job early picking up a few nice browns and was rewarded by the end of the day with a 12 lber and one close to 11 lbs. Spoons were hot today in silver and blue but we had to keep changing up the program to keep the fish interested. Flat lines were the most active last week and we struggled to get a bite on them this week. Trolled from Mexico launch to 9 mile then from Mexico Launch to Selkirk. Nothing between Mexico and Selkirk at all. Great day on the water and one of those browns turned into one of the greatest meals I have ever created! Hopefully we get a few more weeks of fishing in the bay for those beauties. Also ran into a newbie at the launch this morning who was a first timer at Mexico Bay. Did the right thing by sharing as much information as possible and hopefully he had a great day out there too.

  12. yea the forecast for the week is warm weather which should make the action hot all week. I should have added that we casted for them for about an hour in a hot spot but couldnt get anything to bite and we really threw a bunch of stuff at them. As soon as we started trolling again we were right back on em.
  13. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):4-22-2011 Time on Water:6 hours (7-2) Weather/Temp:Cloudy and as high as 56 degrees Wind Speed/Direction:Light and Variable Waves: less then 1 foot Surface Temp: 42-44.5 Location:Mexico Bay LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 18 Total Boated:15 Species Breakdown: 13 Browns, 2 Steelhead Hot Lure: Green Jointed Stickbaits Trolling Speed: 1.8-2.8 Down Speed:Surface down to 6 feet on the riggers Boat Depth: 9-15ft (most taken at 11 ft) Lure Depth: ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Launched first thing this morning and had the first one in the boat before the second rod was set. The mud line was visible right off the back and as long as we stayed around it we got strikes. Ended with 13 Browns (4 in the 7-8 lb range) and 2 Steelhead (17 inches each). Most fish were taken on the flat lines 120-135 ft back. Couple striked on the riggers but more taken on flat lines. No planner boards on this trip and the fish didnt care either. Green jointed stickbaits were the trick for us with a few coming on green spoons as well. Great action all day and lots of fun. We would have stayed until dark but its my wife's birthday so I had to come home to take her to dinner. It sounded like everyone on the water had a productive day.
  14. were heading out in the morning to give it a try. Looks like the only good day to fish this weekend.
  15. I'm in the Syracuse area but travel the whole state for work. What are you selling? [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  16. Thanks Chris. You were correct about the Big Jons being the basic sportsman. Based on your information I will look for a more complete setup with swivel mounts. Also I will keep my eyes open for a used pair on this site. Hopefully I can find a good deal. Thanks again and happy fishing! [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  17. I have convinced myself that I need to get a pair of electric downriggers for my 18' Wellcraft 180 to replace the manual walker downriggers. The Walker's work fine and I have used them for years on my last boat but I need something electric for Chinook fishing on Lake Ontario. Because I only get out 1 or 2 days a week I dont want to spend $1,000 on a pair of riggers so I need some advice on what the best values are and any reviews from other fishermen on this site. I saw Big Jon riggers at Bass Pro Shops yesterday for $320 each but know very little about them. Any help would be appreciated. Ryan
  18. I'm so glad I checked out this part of the website! I was planning on spending the money on a planner mast system but was hesitant because I also want to purchase a set of electric downriggers. Now that I can make my own planner system I can have my cake and eat it too. Thanks Guys and nice job. Those things look better than any store bought systems I have seen on the market and you get the satisfaction of knowing you made it yourself.
  19. can someone provide directions on where to park to witness this awesome sight? I would love to check it out when I am in the area next week for work.
  20. I'm thinking the same thing Kevin. Probably give it a try next weekend and possibly with some storm wildeye goby swimbaits.
  21. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):4/9 Time on Water:6:30-3 Weather/Temp:Sunny and warm Wind Speed/Direction:Light & Variable Waves: None Surface Temp:38-44 Location:Mexico Bay LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 4 Total Boated:3 Species Breakdown:Browns Hot Lure: Michigan Stingers (Green/Black, Green/Silver) Trolling Speed: 2.5-3.0 Down Speed: Boat Depth: 10-25 Lure Depth: 5-17 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Spent a beautiful day on the water in Mexico Bay for the first trip of the season. Managed to grab 3 browns (4-5 lb cookie cutters) all at various depths and in a couple different locations south of the Mexico Point launch. Fished with riggers only since I am not outfitted with planner boards......yet. Seems like alot of the action from other boats was on the boards so I believe I will invest in a set for my boat. All in all it was a great day out there. Does anyone ever try casting swimbaits or sticks to these Browns in the spring? I would think that working the shore with a spinning rod and some swimbaits would bring a few fish to the boat. Just curious....
  22. nice catch. I will be out there this weekend. Any additional information (colors and depths) would be appreciated. You can PM me if you prefer. Thanks and Congrats!
