My sister in law in Canton sent me this message.
I had a guy come into the store today and somehow we started on a conversation and he told me Pierce a nearby farmer found 100 dead deer 😞
Although not confirmed it certainly is scary and no frost in the forecast. -
Just took my normal short ride and saw the same 4 doe and 5 fawns back on the place I hunt. Also saw 2 deer in field where I had been seeing them in. Perhaps it didn't hit as bad as I thought😀
I’ve seen 22 deer since last evening after seeing none for several days. Granted some were the same deer but I’m much more optimistic than yesterday!Just heard a friend found 4 more dead ones walking his property with a dog.
-
Took an early morning drive today and covered about 40 miles. Passed many fields where I always see deer. I saw only 3 fawns under one apple tree near the road with no doe. Never saw another deer. Things definitely look bleak! I hear things may not be bad in the Canton area but don’t know for sure, think they had a frost.

This weekend’s muzzleloader opening should tell a lot. See what is brought in to deer processing butchers.
-
Got my muzzleloader ready to go
with black horn powder and bullets you gave me. Shoots very nicely! Now I’m not sure if I want to shoot a deer especially a doe.
Took a drive to Pulaski early this morning and never saw a deer on the way down or back. Many folks in my area are concerned.
-
Many of my friends are reporting very few, if any, trail cam photos or sightings of deer in past week. I took a drive this evening around a block where I generally can see 12-20 deer. Tonight I saw only 4.
There have also been at least 20 dead deer found in the Hammond/ Redwood area. I have also observed, what seems to be, a large number of turkey vultures around this area.
This has me very concerned with affect of EHD on our local deer population and the upcoming season. I also don’t remember not having a frost this late in the fall.

I just use one of my kids old small backpack. It holds a lot and is pretty comfortable. (Saw, scent, binoculars, knife, buttout, paper towels, zip lock bags, compass, cleaning gloves, gloves, hat, face mask, ammo, grunt tube, bleat can, and rattle horns, food, drink, and safety harness if needed) I can even throw in extra jacket. That said I seldom need to walk long distances.

Drum are delicious. They eat a diet similar to smallies. The key is getting on ice as soon as they are caught. The meat starts to decompose quickly otherwise and will taste fishy. If handled correctly its firm and delicious!! Under 8 pounds are best.

Good to know. I know saltwater drum are very good but after researching I was of the opinion that they were questionable especially the larger ones. If I get a smaller one I’ll give them a try.

Did you fillet the drum? If so, I would be curious to hear how it tasted.

I have been going to try eating one but I’ve read conflicting reports mostly bad. Those that did to eat them were using small fish.I took the otoliths and buried it in my garden.

I’m sure the first of many river walleyes. Glad it worked.

I was able to get my grandsons out this morning and we had a great time. First pass with riggers had a big fish hit and while getting the 8 year old situated to fight it the other rigger went. The 5 year old landed a 19” walleye while the 8 year old reeled in the 12lb 3 oz drum. We were also able to land 5 bass two which were over 3 lbs. not a bad morning with my wife being a great help piloting the boat. I even took otoliths of drum for a treasure.

Always amazes me when they have the whole river and feel they have to run close by and throw a big wake. Not to thoughtful when I’m trolling by myself especially at night. I now always wear and inflatable vest.
Things sure have changed in the last 40 years!

When I was a teenager, I bought a rod/reel combo at Sears, line included for probably $30 back then. Our family friend. living legend on The River, Jimmy Evans told me to go drift in The Brockville Narrows and countdown a big Abu Reflex spinner to catch some nice pike. Got in the family 14' rowboat with our old 5 horse Johnson (yep, the green Sea-Horse!) and putted out there at around 6:00 AM by myself. She hit me right away, must have been down there, hungry. I held on for dear life, current sweeping me right past Brockville, past The Three Sisters with something on the other end of that line. After an eternity, I finally saw her. To me, she looked almost as big as my little boat. She saw me too and at that moment decided it was time to dive. She flipped her tail and took off for the bottom so fast, my little Sears rod snapped right in half just above the reel seat. I watched helplessly as the rod section slid down the line into the water. Wasn't long after that the line went ping and it was all over.
Kevin, it's not important whether you landed that girl. You would have let her go anyway. What we have are memories so vivid, we will relive them forever. I will always remember that green back, the swirl on the surface when she came up to give me the finger before she let me know who's river this really was. Great story, I believe every word. Cherish the memory friend.
Tight Lines,
Grady
Another great tail of the river unicorn.

Doesn’t surprise me. I’ve caught them on Mann stretch 30. Pretty large lure.

I haven’t been able to use PM either. I use to be able access old messages and send and receive message messages from my phone.
Also I use to gets red dot notifications if I received a new message.
What changed?

Would the rigger be considered a second rod as there is no release to a rod ?

That and the eyes in the winter...i can't believe they haven't instituted a slot limit for the winter. This is also coming from a guy that loves jigging them thru the ice.

Couldn’t agree more. Need something like an 18-26” slot and with one over 26” for trophy or non releasable fish for the lake and St Lawrence River.

Was fortunate to take him this evening 1/2 mile from home with muzzleloader.
Thanks for the bullets Rusty they work just fine!!!!
I’ve been concerned with EHD outbreak in my region but I’ve seen quite a few deer so far. Think it’s hit worse just north of here.
