Just saw my first Jefferson County NY black bear. I was returning home tonight after scouting turkeys and it was only about a 1//2 mile from my house. I think it was 1 year old, about 50 lb., like a stocky dog and 50 yards away. I’ve had a trail cam photo but this was my first sighting. I wasn’t able to get my phone out in time for a photo.
They are beginning to show up more frequently and several have been seen within a mile of my house in the last couple years.

Scouted this morning and both turkeys and deer were active. Seems like many jakes this year.

Ogdensburg, Oswego, Chaumont and Black River Bay all can be good in May. I’ve caught good ones at each place. The 1000 Island area seems more productive latter in the year from my experience.

We fished from West of Catfish to Port Ontario all water was clear but in front of Salmon river. There we found water to 50 degrees and colored but still no hits. Most of the rest of the places we tried had clear water 45-47 degrees. Fished mostly 5-20 fow but did try out to 25 fow. Tried speeds from 1.8-2.4 and leads back to 150 “ and various colors of sticks and spoons. Ran an 8 rod spread and never moved a rod in 4 hours.

Wondering how the trip out to the lake is. Can be even pretty shallow under normal conditions.

I think some of the post on eating raw freshwater fish scare people off. It’s very easy to make and tasty but need to follow recommendations.

I had to set my freezer to coldest setting to get the required -4 degree F. Left it for a week to kill any possible parasites. Very easy to make and a good end product.
I also bought a special set of tweezers call an Easy Boner for removing the pin bones that works well.

It was a little windy but we still had a great outing on the river.

Just check the weather and avoid strong W NW or SW winds. Lighter wind or winds out of S or E should be no issue. I fish my 18’ Lund Alaskan with no issues. Just avoid fishing in waves over 2’ as it isn’t very comfortable although the boat can handle it.
Also you won’t need to be far off shore fishing browns.
Windfinder.com is a pretty decent source for wind speed, direction and wave heights.

Sounds good. But if I never see you post again ...... I know not to try it.

From my research the risk is low to begin with. In addition freezing to -4 F for 7 days kills any potential parasites ( make sure your freezer is set this cold)and the salt kills and bacteria so should be fine.

Was thinking even if you could launch at Stony it might be pretty shallow journey out to the lake same with Pine Grove.

Tastes like lox to me. going to have it tomorrow with bagels, cream cheese, red onion and tomato.

After reading the dangers of fresh water lox I decided to try it. Froze the skinned fillets for a week then put them in 50/50 mix of Kosher Salt and sugar with some dill weed. Vacuum sealed and put in refrigerator with a plate and weight on top. Left 2 days remove bones, rinsed and sliced thin. Then candled to search for parasites.

I want to give Tony’s Reel and Downrigger Repair out of Orchard Park a shout out. I sent them two Penn reels that were not functioning and one with a broken part. They repaired them and even sent me an extra part in case I need it at a later time. Also very personable on the phone and reasonably priced. I’d highly recommend them.

I bought a plug in Bubba and it has worked flawlessly. Also a little less expensive than American Angler and extremely dependable and efficient. Also comes with 4 blades but I like the thin ones. I burned out several Mr Twisters and have used the Bubba for a year and had no issues. It doesn’t even get warm or bog down after doing 100 perch nonstop and I’ve never had to change a blade.

I’ve tried many as believe this one is best. Roll in flour then mix sparkling water with flour till you have a thin batter (similar to tempura) then dip in panko and deep fry. They come out nice and crispy and brown and you never get the oil foaming up like with egg wash. Also can reuse the oil and they don’t seem to absorb any grease.

Rd9 I plan on building a couple one color this week to add to Arsenal. How long of leader do you usually run from lead to spoon?
I ran one shorter and one longer on a 2 color and the longer one took more fish.

I also add varying amount of split shot 5’ above the spoon when fishing in deeper water. When in tight I run without weight and watch my turns so boards don’t stall.
