I personally run 50/50 mix of spoons and sticks. Sometimes they favor one over the other, sometimes it doesn’t matter. I run straight 12 lb big game mono with small snap swivels so it’s easy to change lures. When shallow I run without any weight. When out in 12 fow or deeper I add spit shot or use 2 or 3 color leadcore off the boards and drop riggers deeper.
Spoons can certainly hang up and cause problems if your boards stall so it’s critical to watch your turns. I like running a good spread 6-8 lures so fish can tell me what they want as it changes day to day. That said it is better to start with small spread and build as you get experience. When bite is on a 4 lure spread is plenty to keep you busy.

Might be better targeting the brown trout. Stay in 5-25 fow along shoreline and troll small stick baits and spoons at 1.8-2.2 mph.
May find them anywhere from the cut to Oswego and even inside the harbor. Look for warmer water with some color to it.
You may also hit some lakers, steelhead, salmon and pike.

That’s interesting. The ones we caught were mostly empty except one had seven 2” bluegills in it’s stomach which I thought was strange.

Parking lot at launch is showing some blacktop. Getting into the lot is still a bit troublesome.

Keep posting current conditions. My boat is ready and so am I. Would be great to get out with next weeks warm weather.

I was wondering the same.

I have my boat uncovered and in the garage. Engine started right up. Vacuumed it and will do some cleaning and by tonight it should be ready for spring fishing. It will need a good power washing later this spring.
I may be greatly jumping the gun but it’s always better to be prepared.[emoji3]

Rather than hit the sloppy ice today I got 8 rods spooled up for browns and walleyes.
2 for shallow riggers, 4 for inline boards, and 2 with 2 color lead core off boards.
Next will be uncovering the boat, putting it in my garage, and getting it ready to roll. Then wait for a launch to open. This warm rain and wind should help!
Looking forward to browns, perch and then walleyes.

Last year I was able to launch at Mexico on March 10th. Anyone have any idea when the launch may open up? Was thinking with little ice cover and the current warm conditions things might open up early again.
I do have my boat plowed out so it wouldn’t take a lot to get ready to fish. Probably just a pipe dream.

I heard a ATV went through the ice off Long Point State Park Chaumont Bay. With warming temperatures, longer days, and higher sun you need to be very careful as ice conditions can change rapidly. I’m sure with the big increase in ice fishermen this year we will unfortunately see more of this in the next few weeks. Be careful out there!

Amazing how dumb and inconsiderate people can be. Not wishing that anyone would get injured but it would serve then right if they dropped their front end in.

Good bite today for me , had to throw the candy at them. Had 4 flags 2 took in the weeds and stole my bait before I got there. The others were 37 and 36in . Both released for someone else to catch. I didn't see much of anything else going on .

As a Hobart alumni I have followed his amazing career. Here’s a guy that is truly a great roll model, unlike so many pro athletes these days. Now he has a ring!!!!

With kids you need to keep them active. Some snacks are always a good idea as is a frisbee to toss around or something else to keep them busy.

Years ago 4 of us shot 17 snowshoes in January with no snow on the ground. That was at Fort Drum.
Another time we got 16 on my wife’s family farm in Canton. That was nearly 40 years ago. Now habitat has matured and predator numbers have increased.

I’ve had a couple experiences with both coyotes and foxes and turkey. Several times I’ve had coyotes come into my turkey decoys/ calls while hunting. One even grabbed a down bird and I had to scare it off. Also saw one following two birds across a field.
I also had a fox attempt to grab a downed turkey that was flopping and didn’t want to leave. Deer hunting I had a fox come by when turkeys went to roost and I used a mouth squeak to shoot it.
They definitely zero in on them in my area.

Bernie caught most and didn’t even remove his gloves.

Fished same area today with different results. I only caught 20 perch and one pike. Prof T do better with about 30 perch.

Spring brown spoons weight?

I also add varying amount of split shot 5’ above the spoon when fishing in deeper water. When in tight I run without weight and watch my turns so boards don’t stall.
