  1. I personally run 50/50 mix of spoons and sticks. Sometimes they favor one over the other, sometimes it doesn’t matter. I run straight 12 lb big game mono with small snap swivels so it’s easy to change lures. When shallow I run without any weight. When out in 12 fow or deeper I add spit shot or use 2 or 3 color leadcore off the boards and drop riggers deeper.
Spoons can certainly hang up and cause problems if your boards stall so it’s critical to watch your turns. I like running a good spread 6-8 lures so fish can tell me what they want as it changes day to day. That said it is better to start with small spread and build as you get experience. When bite is on a 4 lure spread is plenty to keep you busy.

  2. Rather than hit the sloppy ice today I got 8 rods spooled up for browns and walleyes.
2 for shallow riggers, 4 for inline boards, and 2 with 2 color lead core off boards.
Next will be uncovering the boat, putting it in my garage, and getting it ready to roll. Then wait for a launch to open. This warm rain and wind should help!
Looking forward to browns, perch and then walleyes.

  3. I heard a ATV went through the ice off Long Point State Park Chaumont Bay. With warming temperatures, longer days, and higher sun you need to be very careful as ice conditions can change rapidly. I’m sure with the big increase in ice fishermen this year we will unfortunately see more of this in the next few weeks. Be careful out there!

  4. I’ve had a couple experiences with both coyotes and foxes and turkey. Several times I’ve had coyotes come into my turkey decoys/ calls while hunting. One even grabbed a down bird and I had to scare it off. Also saw one following two birds across a field.
I also had a fox attempt to grab a downed turkey that was flopping and didn’t want to leave. Deer hunting I had a fox come by when turkeys went to roost and I used a mouth squeak to shoot it.
They definitely zero in on them in my area.
