SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS Tried closer to home and were less successful than at Mexico yesterday. Started with clear cold water off Stony and quickly ran west to Sandy. Found water with good mud line and a couple degrees warmer. Hit a couple fish so worked the area a while and popped a couple more. All on sticks, bright colors. Things then went dead and we were unable to connect again. Don't believe the eat wind helped. Only saw a couple other boats.

  5. I use the Off Shores and they work great. Can be fished everything from spoons, sticks, cranks, spinner and worms and even will take some deeper presentations like wire, drop weights and lead core. Stagger the drop backs, running longer on outside boards will avoid most tangles. Deadly on spring browns and deeper fall walleyes. Can easily run three per side. I've got a mast but when fishing by myself or with a buddy, I generally run Off Shores as they are somewhat easier to handle. It's not to hard to learn to use them. I prefer to leave rear clip in place and unclip them at the boat instead of rigging them to slid. ( just my preference) I always have them on the boat!

  6. I always fishing it the first week of the season and do well catching post spawn fish in 12-20 fow on bottom bouncers and spinner and worms. The web site is kinda quiet now but once the season begins there will be many useful reports that will post more up to date general information on what's working and where. You might not get specific locations but it will certainly get you headed in the right direction

  7. Getting closer to your target date and weather has been very cold. Nights nave been down in the teens the last week and next week seems little better, especially with the accompanying north wind. The water hasn't warmed very much and we need a wind change and some warm days and perhaps warm rain to change things around.

That said, things can turn around in a hurry. As stated, west of Stony can be very good. I generally fish from Stony area all the way to Oswego area and trail my boat to area holding warmest water. I usually check out web sites to get undated satellite surface temp as a guide. I had good luck with browns, and a few lakers and Atlantics last spring.

  8. Although it's been cold and somewhat windy the river is clearing and I was able to get a boat in a couple times. Saw the first ship go through the seaway yesterday! Did about a half pail on Tuesday and a third of a pail on Wednesday( No limit in Jefferson County) in a few hours fishing. Not great but a few waves came in. Mostly 8-10" fish and a few larger although you do have to sort through a bunch of dinks. Looking forward to some warmer weather but mother nature appears to be taking her sweet time. Icy guides are a real pain.

  9. Sounds like were set up very similarly. I also have 4 ram rod holders in a trac mount system. Also have dual crank planning board mast in front that goes into my pedestal mount. I have two Cannon electric riggers with dual rod holders. I also often run Off Shore inline planners. I agree that the boat is very versatile and I also fish bass, panfish and duck hunt out of my Lund. I had it in at Krings Point this morning perch fishing.

May is the month for Black River . I fish shallow with bottom bouncers and spinners and worms and farther out with deep running cranks. Mud Bay, Guffins Bay and Chamount Bay are also worth a try for walleye. I also fish the St. Lawrence a lot in the summer and do well on walleyes and run to Bay of Quinte in may and in the fall.

PM me your phone number and I'll give you a shout and we can talk specifics if you want.

  10. I've been itching to get out but this week the weather doesn't look like it's cooperating. I fished out of Stony early last year and caught one brown near Sandy. We dodged some ice and logs also. The water was very clear, til I got near the creek, where the water colored up and was warmer. I fished out of Mexico and Pine Grove and did very well down that way a little later in the year. We managed to catch limits of double browns, an Atlantic and a few lakers thrown in the mix. Water temperature and color seem to be the key. Need water that's not crystal clear and a few degrees warmer water really concentrates the fish. If you hit a fish work that area as there are likely more nearby. I had good luck on stingers spoons back between 100 and 150' in 5-15' of water. I'm going to try more sticks in real tight this year.

42 temp near the creek sounds like a good place to be near if everything else is 37 degrees. Creek mouths tend to be good this early.

Maybe I'll see you out there sometime! I've got an 18' Lund Alaskan and, as I said, usually launch at Stony, Pine Grove or Mexico. I also fish Black River, Henderson, and Chamount area for walleyes.
