I began the season slowly. It took me 7 days to get a Tom but was able to get my sister in law a Jake when she came up. Last week I took a Jake knowing my son was coming this weekend. Today I was able to put him on a nice Tom. 10” beard with 1” spurs. Now I can sleep in and get serious about fishing.

Looking forward to another season. I have set up some blinds but haven’t scouted as much as usual. My old legs don’t work as well as they use to so walking can be pretty painfulI some days. I did heard a couple gobble this morning and have seen some nice birds on or near the property I hunt. Seems like every year the same locations I’ve hunted for many years still pay off so I actually don’t need to scout but I enjoy the chase.

It’s good many ways but one of my favorite is to remove silver skin and tendons from the breast, slice across the grain into strips and deep fry like fish. These turkey fingers are great with a honey mustard dip. I also will slice the breast in half crosswise and pound them out thin . Marinate them and grill. Don’t forget the thigh meat which is very good. It can be grilled or ground for sausage, meat sticks or turkey burger. I often mix with pork. The drumsticks have very hard tendons and I generally cook them with the rest of the carcass (bones) and make a delicious turkey soup. I even enjoy the heart , liver, and gizzard which I slice and pan fry in butter with garlic. You can basically use it as you would boneless, skinless chicken breast. You get several meals if you use all and don’t just take the breast!

A good day on the lake with Pete Statton and Adam Powell. We caught 14 and kept 9. Nothing at first in clear water but we made a move and found them and it was hot. A couple doubles and a triple in the mix. All spoons off boards in 6-8 fow. Colored water was where it was happening. Water started out pretty calm but the wind picked up so we pulled and had a slow bumpy ride back to launch.

Was beginning to think my new motor was a jinx as I haven’t been hitting the browns well this spring. Finally after an unsuccessful start out of Stony Creek we made a long move and hit a fish. Once we found them it was a fish each pass in a quarter mile stretch of water. Ended up with 9 browns, 4 bass, 2 walleyes and a pike. All caught shallow on various colored spoons.

Headed towards Oswego from Mexico Point. Found clear water and didn’t hit any fish. Decided to run to Selkirk and found some colored water. Hit some fish in shallow and ended catching 4 browns and 2 big smallmouth off boards in 7 fow. Mix of spoons and sticks off boards. East wind picked up and we trolled back toward the launch with nothing else hitting and finding clear water again. Guy at the ramp said he had caught a king and lakers in 20-35 fow.
