Yea, I headed in early. Had a 3/4 of a mile walk in, reached the stand a 5:45. Zero movement yet, going to throw everything I got at them today, might even rattle even though I cant ever get it to work.

This made me chuckle. I was bowhunting the Southern tier about 25 yrs ago and hadn't had a shot all season--but was leaving the next day to bowhunt Illinois(back then you could still get free permission). I was feeling sorry for myself as my "streak" of filling my NY Buck bow tag was going to end at 10 yrs. The buck to doe ratio  down there at that time seemed to be 100 to 1 in favor of the does.

My last NY bowhunt that year it was 70 degrees on a late October afternoon. As I climbed the hill to my chosen stand , I said to myself "I'm gonna pull out all the stops". I had a set of rattling horns with me that were large OH sheds--more appropriate for the midwest than that area at the time. I threw common sense and caution to the wind every 20 mins as I cracked those large antlers together on the edge of an in woods apple orchard. Around 430 pm the most bad ass 1.5 yr old Buck came strutting in stiff legged and I swear hair standing up. He literally came to the base of the tree, and I put a perfect shot on him. He bolted up the hill, and collapsed--rolling right back to the base of the tree. I literally had to climb over him when I got down. He was a "NY 11", a perfect 6 inch matching spike, LOL. To this day it is the smallest racked buck I've ever taken but one of the most memorable. Back then most of the landowners still permitted bucks only, and of course everything has changed for the better since then.

Good luck to all the last day bowhunters! I've only taken a couple on the last day but they are most satisfying. Today I'm prepping to get my brother out for an all dayer tommorrow. Being in a wheelchair he's only good for one of those a season.

Boy, you will get into big trouble with Captains  Songin and Perlioni with that statement, LOL!   They maintain the steelhead are responsible for bad second year alewife numbers!  I am still sticking with the notion that the only significant natural reproduction on the south shore is the Salmon River.  The remainder of the tributaries are too warm in the summer.  On the Canadian side, there is definitely a need for better data.

Tuesday will be very interesting, if only to get everyone on the same page about plans that apparently  have been discussed with one committee but not the general public.

Charlie you need to knock it off with putting words in people mouths that were never said.  If you want to quote me--the science is wrong or incomplete. I have never said the 2nd year alewife numbers were "bad." To the contrary, they are immense. As for Capt Songin his quote was IF--IF they are so concerned with predation on young alewife then look no further than the Steelhead that target that size(first and second year) class of alewives almost exclusively. Not only do they prefer them, they occupy the same part of the water column much of the season. Stick to what you do best--repeating what you hear from the DEC. BTW, how many days a year do you spend ON Lake Ontario?

Right from the state of the lake meeting minutes.  See the bold / underlined area below.

Average weights and condition (a measure of “stoutness”) of salmonines at a given age serve as a

potential index of relative balance between the number of predators (primarily salmonines) and

preyfish; however, water temperatures also influence fish growth and condition. Average weights

and condition are calculated for salmonines examined from the open lake fishery (Section 2) and

as spawning adults at the Salmon River Hatchery (Section 9).

Chinook salmon growth measured from the open lake fishery was below average in 2014 – 2017.

The August 2017 mean length (35 in) of age-3 Chinook salmon was over 1.7 in shorter than the

long-term average. However, Chinook salmon condition or relative “stoutness” in 2017 was one

of the heaviest values observed for Chinook salmon 28 in. Below average summer temperatures

may have negatively impacted growth in length, however, the good condition of Chinook salmon

28inches indicated that alewife (the primary forage of Chinook salmon) abundance was sufficient

to maintain Chinook condition (Section 2).

Correct Brian. Both sides of the mouth. ONE river is getting the big returns this fall.

As per the Press release yesterday the south shore of Lake Ontario is going to receive another 20% reduction in Chinook salmon for 2019...  The reasoning behind this is certainly debatable.  The DEC says there is still a lack of bait in the lake.  I think those of us who spend large amounts of time on the lake can look at this reason and disagree.  Look in the stomachs of these kings and you see large bait for the most part.  They certainly are having no trouble seeking out the larger bait class.  The fantastic fishing we had this year is directly related to a very large class of natural 2 yr olds.  The 3yr old class is weak.  This is showing in the tribs as I type.  I thought it would be just an ok trib run and it is looking that way.  Next year however it will be off the chart.  After next years mature class I am not sure what the expectation will be.  Other reasons they are giving that is total B.S. is the fishing was fantastic because the fish are starving...yea ok... It was fantastic because for a change we had competition.  Kings are competitive.  They want to eat the bait so there buddies cant.  FACT   As was stated by a senior Capt in our meeting last night the Steelhead is our number one predator on young of the year Alewife.  DEC is considering more regs to protect the steelhead at the request of our Trib anglers.  These regs will effect lake harvest.  It is imperative you attend these meetings!!!!  I can not stress it enough.

It is time we tell the DEC enough is enough.  Here are a list of public meetings that are mandatory if you own a boat on the south shore.

Thursday, Oct. 4: 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Building, 4487 Lake Ave., Lockport, Niagara County.

Tuesday, Oct. 9: 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. at the Donald Schleiter Lodge and Pavillion, 199 East Manitou Rd. in Braddock Bay Park, Rochester, Monroe County.

Wednesday, Oct. 10: 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. at the Pulaski High School auditorium, 4624 Salina St., Pulaski, Oswego County.

Please feel free to read what I wrote and if you have other opinions please feel free to discuss and keep it professional.

Thank you for listening and I hope to see you at the upcoming meetings.

Well written Brian. The bump from the big wild class of 2 yr olds has the anti King crowd squirming. The anti-King agenda has been in place for any years. It is now that they see opportunity--based on very weak census effort due to weather and mechanical breakdown. They are trying to wean anglers off the Chinook. Keep your heads in the sand and get ready for piles of dead alewife in the future once again as inadequately controlled populations are at greater risk of total collapse.

  5. Reminder the Ladies tournament fundraiser event will once again be held the 1st friday of the Fall LOC derby, August 17th this year. Full details are available @ reelinforacure.com .

In 2016 approx $4800 was raised for Marys Wig room which helps Women deal with the loss of their hair when undergoing chemo treatments.        Last year this event raised $5000 for Breast Cancer network of WNY--metastatic research, which was the largest single donation they have received to date.

This years benefactor will be the "Look good feel better" program through the American Cancer Society.

Teams that already have a boat can enter, and some teams without a boat can sometimes be accommodated. At this point there are more Womens teams than volunteer boat owners/Captains, so please reach out if you would like to host a team-- reelinforacure.com  Again, full details will be on the web site. Please do not direct questions to this post.

Besides a fundraiser, a womens fishing tournament takes place and many women have been introduced to Lake Ontario and the fishery.
