600ft of 45# copper won't fit on the 553.  I have 450 rigged on one now with 300 ft  of 40# power pro backing and its full. Caught a tyee on it sunday and had no issues whatsoever .  If you only put 300 on it you could put a ton of backing on the 553.

Clarion High Speed 553 LS

I have 3 of the okuma copper rods and love them.  They have plenty of backbone.  I also run the tx-44s.  They are great for pulling copper.  On my 450 I run the Clarion 553 high speed reel.  Its a great set up, I believe it retrieves 53" of line per handle turn when the spool is full. 

I think that's a great idea. Help out whoever you can, whenever you can.

Picked up a 30, 25 and an 8 today in 95-130. Also couple lakers and little brown. Hit on a little bit of everything.  Also broke off a screamer.

No matter what you choose to rig up.GET HIGH SPEED REELS   Otherwise you will find yourself having this conversation with yourself.

Moral of the story:  Go high speed, or better yet..... ELECTRIC   Halibut captains have the right idea

Find the warmer water.  When we decided to pack it in the other day we trolled in for the heck of it. Picked up a 13.5# brown in about 90 fow on a ssw mag right on bottom.  All morning the temp had been around 70 deg to about 85 feet down then started dropping. So my guess was that he was hanging where the first big temp break intersected with the bottom.  Just a thought, hope it helps  

Any action in closer today or are they still out in 300?

I have only used them on Cayuga and Seneca.

I see the recipe says low temp, what temp did you have the best luck with?

I've caught perch during the lake trout derby on flat lined orange jointed rapalas behind inline boards.  I like the crawler harness idea, caught many incidental perch on Erie running those off leadcore for walleyes.  I would also think about running the stinger scorpion size spoons.  Let me know how you make out.  Good Luck

Should make it mandatory that  the meteorologist trolls in a 17 footer tinner in 300-500 fow then the little gnome might work a little harder at getting it right!

That's insane. We are headed up to Fair Haven tomorrow.  Hopefully the weather genie reads the crystal ball right for tomorrow!

What size dipsys are you running out 450 and farther?  What depth do you figure they are running at?

Yesterday was a strange day.  We caught a couple kings.......And an 8.5# Walleye on a Nuke green mag slider on a 105 rigger! Gotta love whacky temps!

You can also try MC Rockets. They are a tuneable artificial herring strip that work well.  Mike has come up with a wide variety of colors and has regular and mag sizes.  If you want you can soak them in scent as well.  If you soak them it may change the color.  They hold up very well.

We were out of Fair Haven today. it was still 70 degrees down 120 feet+ over 300 fow   Caught a few little guys and had 3 other good rips and that was it. Beautiful weather though.  We may try again sunday if the temp straightens out. 

Anyone going out in the morning?  We are going to give it a shot. What channel on the radio?
