  1. Has anyone ever tried this?

You have a 450 copper but would like to run it as a 300, could you half hitch 2-3 rubber bands to the copper and then hook just the rubber bands to a church board release, and just run the copper behind the pin in the back of the board.  I realize that copper between the rod and the board, if hanging in the water will create drag issues, but other than that do you think it will work?  With the idea being to reduce as much stress as possible on the copper itself.

  2. Tall Tails,

You are just hooking the rubber band to the clip on the church board, not the backing, correct? So the line runs inside the pin on the back of the board, when the fish hits, the rubber band snaps and the board slides down the line? Am I reading that right? I'm just trying to figure out the best way to run this rig.

  3. Cool - I read before I had much hands-on experience and then reread afterwards.  Made a huge difference with a bit of experience.

I have the dvds as well; found they compliment the book material but don't replace it.

Definitely Agree. The book(s) are great. The DVD's are nowhere near as informative.  Lots of info in the book will be stuff you may already know, but it may be presented in a different point of view that may help out.

  4. I was 10 years old in my Dads 16 ft blue fin. We were out of Catfish creek and fishing east of nine mile. My Dad would never fish near ANY boat traffic no matter what, so we had already spent 10 hours trolling flat seas with 0 action. My Dad and his buddy who was with us were talking about picking up and calling it a day, when one of the riggers fire and starts screaming. I grabbed the rod and started screaming "I got a king, I got a king!". Like only a 10 yr old boy in a boat for 10 hours with no action can. Meanwhile the king is 300 ft out and headed for Canada. I have no idea how long it took me to land it, but when my Dad slid the net under a 28# king my face hurt I was smiling so much. It was a silver luhr jensen dodger and a blue/white squid. That lure was one of the "ones" you dream about. We put many of the same pattern out on later trips and they never produced like that "one" did. I think I cried when we it broke off on a later fishing trip. Never forget that fish...Ever.

  5. Set up just out of the chute at 6:00 am and headed east toward moon beach.  Picked up a 5 lb brown on a chart/white J-9, 12 lb. laker on a B fuller SSW, small coho on the same rapala, and a 5.5 lb. small mouth   on a gold/black thunderstick!  Yes, it was bigger than the brown we caught!  Slow morning, but beautiful day for the first trip of the year.

Positive side note :)  .  Forester Dave picked up a beautiful 18.5 lb KING on a small firetiger stick :ninja:  :ninja:

Water temp was between 45-48 from the chute to moon beach. Fished from 8-35 FOW.   Black Flies not fun :swear:

  6. You will need the 30's, the 20's won't hold 1000' of wire.  Also, make sure you get linecounters for your dipsy reels, so you can repeat your program when it catches fish.

You might be able to run the 20's if you were running braid, just know that once the fleas show up your braid dipsy is just about worthless.

  7. 400-500' of backer is plenty! I run all Okumas. I have Okuma Clarion 553s for my 450 coppers and they only have 300' of braid backer on them. There has been only a couple of occasions that i have been worried about being spooled (they have come from fishing it out on big boards) and a simple turn of the boat illiminated that worry. Think about this... there is guys squeezing 500' on the same reel with less then 100' of backer and fishing it as a chute rod. The most backing i have on any copper reel is 600' and its behind a 300' copper on an Okuma 55. It would fit another 100-200' more on it but it has been proven that its not needed. With that being said all of my coppers only have between 300-600' of backing.

    Rob,

When you put the 450' copper on the Clarion 553 w/ 300 feet of backing did it fill the reel? I have one I am going to rig up and am just wondering how much (copper/backing) will fit? I am using 30# blood run copper and 40# Power Pro backing.

    Thanks in advance.

  8. Today I got a PM from some guy Tony Robert in Ghana asking me to be his American beneficiary? Says he is worth millions and needs to find a good business, etc...  Anyone else get any of this type stuff??

    Chad(Blue Eye)

Any ideas on how this stuff is getting into LOU?
