  1. I have the 2011 Superfisherman/115 Etec and love it so far. I've pulled my kids tubing, slow trolled Walleye, jigged for lakers using the iPilot trolling motor, and ran dipsies on Seneca in a pretty good wind...maybe 2-3ft white caps or bigger. It handles nice and I wouldn't be afraid to take her on Ontario is similar conditions. As far as width in the back, I've only run 2 dipsies and 1 long line down the chute. My riggers are coming this week and I can give you a better report how that whole program works in a few weeks if you are still interested. Based on what I can tell I wouldn't have trouble with a double if you move the third seat to the bow. I also like the traxtech system so I can change my style of fishing quickly. One thing I wish I had more of is rod storage. Overall I am impressed with the handling. The deep V does force a lot of steering corrections as it carves but its minimal.
  2. Nice job guys! That's a nice bow. Mind if I ask how you were getting the salmon?
  3. I just picked up a pair of 1116's from sportsmans warehouse. If you hurry, they have a $50 coupon for orders over $250. They had a low price as it was, plus let me place two separate orders and apply the $50 off to EACH sale. You have to pay shipping twice but I still saved over $80 because of the promo. I think it ends on the 27th.
  4. Thanks! thats the post i was looking for
  5. I just jumped feet first into two new Scotty riggers (1116). What weights should I get for: an occasional trip to Ontario mostly fishing the finger lakes maybe even trolling for walleye on Oneida I've seen torpedo and cannon ball style, 12-20lbs weights ... I remember seeing a conversation about all this but my search didn't come up with what i was hoping for. Thoughts?
  6. i thought evinrude advertised there was no break in period? Just saw this...There is no break in period that the driver has to worry about. There is a break in period that the motor itself goes through. It uses more oil during this period. Not sure how it works but its supposedly all done on its own and there are no real limits on how you drive during this period.
  7. Someone on here (Hermit?) once said it's not us against each other, it's us against the fish. I'm thankful for this site and the few people I have met already. Because of them we landed our first Laker (Cayuga) and rainbow (Seneca) this weekend. After only 5 trips I'd say we came up the learning curve pretty quick. The laker was all thanks to Hermit, my 9 yr old daughter caught it jigging and was as happy as can be. The rainbow was thanks to Mortigan, Iron Duke, and others advising me to switch my dipsy pole to wire. First time out, fished 60' down with a UV spoon, and my 6 yr old son has a lasting memory.
  8. I'm running a 115HP Etec on the 186 Superfisherman, 2011 model. I generally get up to 36mph flat out, trimmed up. For a 196, I think I'd opt for the bigger size but you are really on the fence. I pull kids skiing and tubing when I'm not fishing and its a horse. The Etec also idles nicely and works well down wind at 2.5-3.0 mph trolling and upwind 1.6-3.0+ mph. I'm still in break in mode so I can't estimate gas mileage and oil consumption but it runs fantastic. Loving the Etec motors in my boat & sled!
  9. Name: Marc Location: Cayuta Lake Home Port: Finger Lakes Boat Name/Type: Eye for an 'Eye II I fish for: Perch, Bass, Walleye, Trout, Salmon, Pickerel, Panfish ================== Hi everyone, thanks for the warm welcome. I look forward to learning and giving back to the community, hopefully as much as I have learned already from folks here. While I am an avid fisherman, my kids are young and they'd rather go tubing than fishing right now. With only a few opportunities a month to learn, this forum has been great for advice and information getting me started in deep water fishing. I've been a bass/walleye guy most of my life and just last summer had a friend take me out on the big O. I'm hooked, no pun intended. I typically fish alone (not many friends of mine like it) on the Finger Lakes, mostly on Cayuta where I live. I'm looking forward to making new friends and just plain talking fishing! I'm also an avid angler diary reporter for NYS and Cornell...it must be in my genes. Marc
  10. Hopefully you got out this weekend! I was stuck running an excavator and installing drain tile...what a fiasco.
  11. I thought about that but have decided after shopping around for used riggers that I'm gonna buy new. As for the probe, I can hold off on that I guess. Do they make a temp probe that is cheaper than $600? Couldn't you just take temperatures manually to find the T-cline and then setup the riggers there and watch blow back (angle of lines?) Or is the probe just that much easier?
  12. Wow, $400 for a single action reel? Uh, not for me. Thanks though.
  13. I'm in the market for 1-2 downrigger's. I've looked at Scotty 2116's and Cannon 10 STX's but can't decide on which. I've also read that probes are the way to go. So if I was to splurge and get a probe, I may have to down size the riggers a bit. Or maybe I should just get 1 rigger and a probe and cut my teeth in downriggers on 1 thing at a time. Any suggestions for getting me started? Oh yeah, thinking ugly stick poles and not sure on the reels. So much to consider!
  14. I would ignore the gas overflow into the carb for now and replace the tank to motor hose. If there is a leak anywhere in this connection you will lose prime (or vacuum as I said before) and the motor will stall out. Sounds like the connection at the motor is the prime suspect and I've seen the female connection go bad more than the male. A new hose will probably do you wonders. You also had more than one thing going on. When you get water in your gas its like italian dressing, they don't mix and separate. Unless shaken with oil, then it turns into an emulsion of oil-gas-water...very similar to the cruet in my fridge! \ I use olive oil in my dressing though!
  15. Check your fuel. Pour the fuel out into a large glass jar (I use a pickle crock) if possible and look for water or cloudy gas/oil pockets. Or just dump the whole can and get fresh fuel, but make sure to wipe out the crap in your tank if its in there. I had the same thing happen to a 7.5HP merc. It was all in the gas. The only other things I have encountered is vaporlock in the fuel delivery system which takes a while to build up while running or no vacuum at all. Make sure the gas tank is vented. Make sure there are no holes in the tubing or dry rot on the ball. It sounds like your motor is fine and will work if given the right fuel. good luck!
  16. Hermit, I like the blog! I didn't see it real time but it was just as good after the fact!
  17. Just met Iron Duke @ HVS, what a great guy. He helped me out picking line and tackle, answering questions. If I can remember half of what he told me I should be catching fish soon! Converting 1 dipsie rod to wire tonight, hopefully I can get out this weekend! Exciting stuff!
  18. I kinda figured it would come to preference. So... Is there a model out there for <$500 that provides more performance for the buck? For example... Looking at Cannon, they have PIC, short stop, etc. (Mag 5 ST: $399) Scotty has tilt arm, low amp draw, fast retrieve. (depthpower 30, model 1114: $399) others? Treerat, I thought about manual riggers, but somewhere along the line I had my mind set on electric. Thanks for the other tips and encouragement, you are correct, it is a bit of an addiction! Opinions are all good! Thanks again guys! Mosh
  19. Guys, Thanks for the advice. I'll keep at it, just need that little bit of success so we don't get too discouraged. I'm doing some searching on the forums for discussions around DR's. I was hoping to find a discussion about the pros/cons of Cannon vs Scotty vs Penn etc but haven't yet. Anybody seen anything like that? I could start a new topic I guess...
  20. Mortigan, I'm using 14lb fireline for the "0" dipsy and 20lb fireline for the "1". I thought the small diameter would help translate to the dipsy chart
  21. Hi everyone, I'm new here and hopefully can add to the forum. I've been reading LOU for about a month now...trying to learn as much as I can about deep water fishing. I'm an old school bass fisherman, converted to walleye and stream fisherman, and now trolling. I recently bought a Starcraft Superfisherman brand new, and love it. It is a great boat for bass, walleye and I would say trolling if I could catch anything! I've been to Seneca 4 times over the past 2 months and managed to catch 2 small salmon and a pike. I've adapted my presentation based on reports here. Last Saturday, I trolled the west side from Watkins to N of the salt plant and struggled with fleas. I went to the east side and the fleas were just as bad by Hector. I gave up just as the rain came. This is the setup I ran last time out: Two dipsy rods, one out to a distance that was supposed to be 35' down, a second at 55' down. The third dipsy was in the prop wash about 60' back. We were seeing marks between 20 and 50'. Varied troll speed from 1.5 to 3.0 mph. Did S turns. Experimented with line out on the dipsies to vary depth. Ran flasher/fly combos and then spoons. Leaders were 8'. We marked a helluva lot of fish in front of Hector, ran through them EIGHT times with different setups and still no dice. Either I'm doing something wrong or maybe the fleas were just too bad? I saw 3 other boats with BIG spreads that seemed out of luck as well. Any advice for a newbie? Should I try Cayuga instead? Oh, I don't have DR's yet but I'm looking. Suggestions would be great here too! Good luck to you all in the tourney on Sat! Mosh
