  1. The last few times out of Oswego I've used basicly the standard ways to catch fish, dodgers ,flies, dipsey with no luck, not really marking a whole lot of fish but the ones that were marked were down 20-30 fow out to 130 fow,I saw a few boats using some sort of planner board, orange in color and bringing in fish,I have to assume that the fish that high in the water might be scared off by the motor,I have never used planners but they seem to be making a differance out there right now. What is the favorite type and how does your lure or fly get down to 30 fow off one of these planners.Appreciate all advice. Thanks
  2. Im seriously looking into a under water camera set up that will attach to the down rigger,im wondering what types and info one has.Im really curious to whats going on down there,my catching fish this year has been tough enough with the weather patterns.Thinking about whats going on down there with my presentation too. Thanks
  3. Hi, I guess I was getting my self confused at first but now understand the differance between the cheater and running with a stacker,I was trying to get more presentation into the water since I can have only three rods in the water if Im fishing by myself, laws and the Coast Guard are thick out of Oswego,so If I run a cheater I can have two lures per rod on a down rigger and run a dipsey or lead core off the back, its hard for one guy to get set up and troll when the lake is choppy so a cheater for now is probally the best way. Thanks

  5. Hi My thought was when I drop my ball into the water the stop bead will be 5 feet above that and if I attach a cheater line above that, that cheater second lure by means of some type of release or clip that when the fish hits it, it will release but the release will still be attached and when I run the ball back up I don't want it to get hung up,or I could use a rubber band now that I think about it,or like you said a shower curtain clip will go down over the bead when coming up. I've seen on line where they use a snap lock hooked to the line with a four foot leader,I assume they didn't have a stop bead coming back at them. I will be using one rod so I guess it is what they call a cheater,I fish by my self a lot so thought it would give me some other chances. The three rod rule is in effect and them Coast Guard and others are out there all the time.
  6. Im wondering how one would run a cheater line when my big jon downrigger has the auot stop plug. Im thinking I would have to watch and manualy stop it to remove the release or snap I use, anyone know a way around this. Thanks for all replies
  7. I have 2 #13 torpedo weights bought from A-tommik fall 2012,never used them and been boxed since purchased,to much weight for me. A steal at $80.00 firm, bought new would cost $110 +
  8. Looks like a pretty interesting tool,I did sign up but the alert doesn't seem to work. When you view the map and click on the Coast Guard Station out of Oswego,my home port or any other icon you can get all the info,to get the wave height just click on the wave button and select your point of interest and the color will tell you according to the bar graph. I do wish there was a bouy around the Oswego area,we have to rely on the ones from Rochester and 3/4 the way across to Canada for wave height,us smaller boaters could really use this date to time our outings, this is about the same info you can receive from Wunder ground along with the visual using Wrights landing web cam over seeing the break wall
  9. I have 3 G5-Black Polyform Fenders, for sale, they are too big for my Yamaha G3,8.5 x 28 inchs, like new used on 6 outings this year.$90.00 firm, cash. Fulton, Oswego area. 315-529-1242 ask for Mike. SOLD
  10. Im getting some conflicting stories on what many fishermen refer to as the morning bite and the late bite, since im not a real early bird anymore since my retirement im not getting out early so the late bite is my best option provideing the lake swells will come down a bit,so many are saying from when the sun rises to about 10-11am for the early and the late bite any where from 5pm to sundown. The last few times out 2-5 pm I marked many fish from 30-60 fow, couldn't get the them to hit anything ,wondering if im wasting my time at this time of day? hardly anything out 100-150 fow and not much on bottom.Fishing out of Oswego. Thanks all the replys Good luck to all
  11. Not haveing the experience of all the types of methods and I couldn't seem to answer the question to a friend of mine that when I was setting up a Howie Fly to use for trolling I was leaving the treble hook about three inchs back of the fly itself and installing four beads before the treble, seems I saw a picture of that some where. I have some Atommick flys where the rig is set with the treble mixed in the fly it self with no beads.I can not find any instructions online so thought I would throw it out there what is right and what is wrong, Got to catch them fish. All replys apprciated

  13. Hi, lakers and steelhead will do where abouts????
  14. Thanks, just need to get it all down and start catching!
  15. The last time I posted it was suggested to get Dan Keatings book on Great Lakes fishing,so I did and starting to read, untill I get going and become experienced at things this is the best site and way to learn because there are many on here willing to lend a hand with tips and techniques.I was able to get my boat out twice this week and amased to see only a few boats out there fishing. It makes me wonder where are all the fish? I marked several smaller schools of fish in 20-30 fow which I assume were not trout or salmon and almost nothing in 100-150 as some told me they should be there. Im wondering what do I need to know on how to find the fish, or do they just move so far away we have to wait till they come back to the area, for some reason I was under the thought they are always around just need to find the thermacline. Thanks for all imputs.
  16. I know, but I love to here every ones opinions, and then I pick up some wisdom along the way to,lol
  17. Hello Fellow fishermen Looks like its picking up out there, finally was able to get my new boat out today for a trial run,I was able to get three rods in while trying to steer and set up my fish finder in between the gusts of wind, finally things settled down.I was using two stick baits and one lure,I was marking fish in 20-30 FOW just east around off the shore line of Oswego Harbor,.wasn't getting any hits and wondering if my bait was getting down far enough, when I reeled the lines in it semed they were kind of shallow,I added another twist sinker 1/4 oz I think. Like to know what every one else is doing when flat linning my DWR'S arn't ready to go yet.I know there are ways to tie on different waits,so I thought I would ask the experts.Im also wondering what is the choice of lure that is catching fish. All help is deeply appreciated. Thanks
  18. Hi fellow fishermen Im looking to buy a battery charger for my boat, trying to decide wether to get a portable unit or install one on board, on board is easier but i also want to keep my battries up to par during winter storage,I had a pro start 3 bank on my boat last year but seems they are getting some bad reviews this year and the boat is gone it was a lemon, Dual pro is another that seems to be getting good reviews but also expensive.Like to know what every one else is using and the pros and cons they are having. Thanks
  19. Hi fellow fishermen Im looking to buy a battery charger for my boat ,would prefer to get a mobile one that would charge the batteries on board and one that would trickel them during winter storage. It looks like the ones with microprocessors or called smart chargers are the norm but it also looks like I would need one with at least 10amps or more to get a complete charge in 6-8 hours, right now I have my starting battery and putting in a deep cycle for the riggers. All thoughts would be appreciated.
  20. Hello fellow fishermen My new Yamaha G3 angler 175fs is almost ready, im looking into putting a 24 volt transom mounted trolling motor on board for trolling out on the lake off of Oswego, seeing what recommendations there are from other that use them. What makes are the best and ones that will last ? what are some good deep cycle batteries? I do plan on putting in a good chargeing system too, I have had the prosport before and it worked fine, any recommendations on the newest ones out there? Thanks a million!
  21. I was on line the other day and came across an article stating that while trolling on lake ontario for trout or salmon that if you are the only one in the boat you can have only 3 rods in the water. Is there any truth to this? Its kind of funny and that Im kind of new to all this and had my first new boat last year the DEC pulled up to me to check me out off shore from Oswego and I had four rods in the water and not a word about it. Still learning. Your thoughts?
  22. Hello, you might have a point there, but im not aware that the flea flicker is noisy,? I had this already spooled because of the amount of fleas from last year, just thought about not having to respool something else and spending money, since my post I found 500 yds of 15lb braid in my tackel that I forgot about,Im going to purchase some cv-20's and run some braid with leader for the browns.
  23. Hello Fellow Fishermen Ive got 4 okuma convector line counter cv20's loaded up with 20lb cortland flea flicker, Im thinking about using these for browns this spring instead of changing the line but im wondering what would be the best way to tie a flourcarbon leader to this stuff,my thought is to tie the line to the leader material because it might get drawn into the reel,or is there small and strong enough swiviles to get through the line guide on the real. Im thinking I need about a ten foot leader,is that about the norm, fishing out of Oswego, Any help would be appreciated.
  24. Thanks for everyones imput to my post.Good Luck!
  25. Hello fellow fishermen, trying to get a jump on getting gear ready for spring fishing,I still have a few spinning rods stringed up with 15lb braid that I thought I would use, wondering what is the prefered line of most, im not going to be running planer boards so im trying to figure out how far back to troll for these browns,I might need to get a couple of new reels with more capacity,I doubt they run like salmon but I want to use lighter gear than the heavy stuff for deeper water. Thanks
