  1. Anyone ever replace the sled on their shanty before?  I have a 1 man clam and a 2 man otter and both have holes in all 4 corners of the sleds.  Im looking to either patch the holes or replace just the sleds.  Ive had them for 15 yrs so they are worn out from dragging.   Any ideas are appreciated

  2. Got out in Onondaga county this weekend with my dogs.  Probably 10 grouse flushes with three birds hitting the ground.  Was able to learn my pointer's body language when the bird is in a tree.  My project rescue dog is also rounding out.  She lets my german find them, then she tracks their flight in the air and pounces on them when they land.  Good one-two punch those two.

Wow awesome! My brothers and I grew up hunting grouse and rabbits without a dog in wayne county. There were a couple of small parcels of state land that held birds. They would always seem to jump up when we couldnt get a shot. Has to be a total different game with a good dog

I appreciate that.  I'll definitely be in touch.  It's a whole different world when you're "driving the boat" rather than just along for the ride, and I'm quickly learning how little I actually know.

I have some work to do the next few weekends, but hopefully I'll be able to get some time soon.

Sounds good bud just let me know

  4. Hey folks.  I've been watching this forum off and on for a couple months and decided it was time to join up.

I currently live on the East side of Rochester and also have a summer place outside of Clayon in the 1000 Islands.  I don't get out fishing nearly as much as I'd like, but that's life with 2 young kids.  Not enough hours in the day.

Anyway, I've been really chomping at the bit to get some ice fishing in since the last few years have been complete shutouts when it comes to actually having fishable ice that I trust.  After hard water fishing with my brother in law and his dad for a couple years, I finally got my own gear (HUGE score at a yard sale), and that's when things started to warm up.  Due to familial changes, I no longer fish with my brother in law, so I'm left trying to figure out how/where to ice fish around Rochester, on top of where to get bait fish and the like.

Hopefully I'll be able to learn some things and get out on the ice at least once before the season ends this year.

Pm me and let me know where and when you want to go out. If im going out you would be welcome to come along. Ill show you some good areas to fish and a couple good local bait shops

  5. Bay Rats don't seem to work as well as rapalas, smithwicks etc...in Oswego, Mexico and east. Anyone else here feel the same way?

I agree i try running them all the time nut end uo switching them out. Challengers and rapalas are the stick baits that work best for me. Ezmeralda bay rat long shallow was a good producer for us though last year and even brought a 20 pound king to the boat in late april. Was really only 1 day it was hot

  6. Brian and I were just talking about this. Any time you have a fantastic bite like we did on lakers two years in a row with triple-digit days, you know something's out-of-whack with the ecosystem. Healthy populations of fish aren't that easy to catch. Look at the walleye on Conesus. This lake simply had too many fish for its carrying capacity and we're seeing exaggerated effects because of the alewife fragility.

    Exactly!

  7. I bought a couple, maybe two-three years ago. Ran them the first year, many times on Superior. Not one bite!, ran small spoons, small stick baits, ect.
Maybe someone, somewhere might catch fish on them, but not me. I sold the them after I had seen enough.

Same with us ran we even ran it on the bottom for lakers and still didn't catch anything. If you cant get lakers to eat it then i dont know what will

  8. 22-250 is by far the best coyote gun out there hands down! It is a little big for fox if your trying to keep the pelts. I have yet to loose a coyote after shooting it with my 250. I know a guy who use to use a 204 but switched after loosing a couple yotes. If your trying to save the pelts then id say a 204 for sure but if you dont care about them or are strictly after yotes then 22 - 250 is what you want. Hard to find a flatter shooting and harder hitting round. Great thread on this on the bark at the moom website also
