  1. Admiral Byrd and I met early at the geneva Chaamber and decided the weeds clogging thelaunch and the brisk south wind weren't exactly optimal for a good start to our day so we motored to Sampson and launched there. We went south on the east side at turned around just north of Willard still  on the east side. We set out (2) 5 leader Seth Greens, a five color leadcore and a 10 color leadcore and a 275 copper all spoons. It was fairly rough so we decided 5 rods was enough to start with :)

To summarize it was a slow bite all morning and into the afternoon -nothing despite marking a huge amount of bait and fish all along the east side going north and they were nearly all within a narrow band 30-50 ft down and a heavy concentration in the 40 ft range over 50-10 ft of water. Nothing much marked other

than the occasional lakers on bottom out past that depth. There was a moderate amount of debris mostly weeds in pods scattered along bands all along the east side on the surface as well as some beneath which was a moderate pain in the butt the whole time. Surface temp 68-70 degrees.  We went 6 for 6 during the AM spread out time-wise. 2 rainbows, 1 landlock, and three lakers and none of them giants.....no hits or fish from about 11 AM until 2:30 PM.  Orange and silver and some varied color tape on smaller spoons. The orange and silver Great Lakes Keuka Wobbler (heavy blank) worked well on the copper for rainbows. All spoons that connected were run between 40-50 ft down on downriggers, copper, and the Seth Greens. The leadcores didn't do a thing regardless how many colors used or the type of spoon. The sliders on the riggers were also unproductive.  Mostly small and medium spoons used as we were targeting the silvers. We didn't use the divers because we were targeting the upper part of the water column. The best part of the day was all the busting that went on as usual....After 35 years of fishing together we are running out of new tricks and humiliation tactics

Les, you`ve got to tell me how you do it!  Every time I see you or a pic of you, your facial hair gets darker.  All the while, my hair gets grayer!  Care to share your secret??  (Hi Bob, was that ok?)

  2. Think that was written before people were making sense...offspring 10 years after 1969 and Woodstock..that can't be translated can it?

I didn`t make Woodstock but I made the concert at Watkins race track back then.  And, the guy that sold me the Orange Sunshine tabs promised it would help me to see things so much clearer, and with great color.  Ok, I`m done.  Textaria just hit a homer and the Yanks are up 3-2.

  3. Ok Darkwater, you made me get out of my comfy recliner and dust off Mr Chapman, now here goes:  taken from Chapman`s Piloting, 54th edition, 1979, pg 75:  "Right of way of fishing vessels"- "Inland Article 26 accords righ-of-way status, within limitations, to vessels engaged in fishing.  Sailing vessels underway must keep out of sailing vessels or boats fishing with nets, lines,or trawls.  Although not explicitly stated in  the Inland Rules (as it is in the InrRR), power -driven vessels likewise should also keep clear of fishing vessels.  This rule does not give any vessel or boat engaged in fishing the right of obstructing a fairway used by vessels other than fishing vessels or boats."

Must keep in mind this was written 37 years ago.  It`s entirely possible, even probable, there have been addendums and or changes since then.

(Is anybody getting the idea I really don`t care for sailboats?)

  4. Launched early from the Chamber with my buddy John and had  6 lines trolling by 5:45 AM headed south on west side. 2 riggers with sliders,  a 10 core,a 5 core and 2 wires with spinneys. Trolled for about an hour before first fish - laker  about 3 lbs on wire rig out120 on green home made fly. Another good hit on same rod half hour later off before could get to rod.  About 2 hrs later pulled lines went back north reset with different spoons etc. At about the same spot as last laker another same size on downrigger set at 45 with Great akes #44 spoon with dark blue tape. later another hit and gone same lure. Trolled across lake to east side wind calmed a bit trolled south toward Sampson as during the whole troll from north end marked all kinds of bait and fish suspended mostly within 30-60 ft range but couldn't get them to hit no matter how many lure changes or presentations or changes in trolling directions. Finally just as reaching Sampson park  downrigger set at 50 peels line and at first I thought it was a good rainbow or landlock but then it dove toward bottom and repeatedly peeled line multiple times...all the while staying down...then I thought maybe a good brown or big laker....the next head shakes and I was thinking laker....sure enough a big fat laker about 9 lbs on the Great Lakes 44 again (released unharmed). All three lakers had pot bellies and have obviously been chowing heavily out there. . The availability of bait is pretty incredible and a lot of the marks we saw in large numbers suspended with and near bait suggested silver fish to me with lakers below. I think it indicated pretty strongly that there is way too much food readily available to the fish out there that it explains to some degree why they won't hit when trolling  (i.e. minimal energy expenditure). I took a few representative (and quite usual screenshot examples out there today) so folks can see what I mean. Never had a touch on the cores regardless of lures used or how run (off boards or straight, down chute etc.) ran the 10 color in various ways  (number of colors - nothing). John kept the 2 smaller lakers for the smoker.

Man, that is one impressive body!

PS:  It ain`t the dude in the hat..:)

  5. The law says a vessel under power has to give way to a vessel under sail, but when you have riggers down and lines out, common sense and courtesy says it should be the other way around. Is there an exception for power boats engaged in fishing? I bet there is for commercial fishing vessels.

Lively 1, take this with a grain of salt, and if I`m wrong, someone please correct, but I seem to recall, when I was reading "Chapman`s Piloting" about 30 years ago in preparation for the captain`s test, (never did take it), that I read a boat that is moving but engaged in fishing (ie.. lines out) and not easily maneuverable must be given the right of way by a sailing vessel.  Hop

  6. Thanks fellas.  Been about 30 years since I`ve had a "new to me" boat.  However, my new problem is trying to figure out all these new gizmos.  I have a good 4 inches of owners manuals to wade through.  What the heck is an Airmar transducer? And a fish hawk thermo probe??  Is that something you stick in the fish??  Who knew?!

  7. I am finally going to let her go.  This boat is fully equipped to troll for salmon, sneak around docks for pike and bass or just pull a tube for the kids. The only reason that I am selling her is because I have upgraded.  She is in great condition runs like a top and everything works.

    You have a pm.  Hop

  8. I'm in Watkins now. The south ten miles is junk and dirty. Many trees out there. Canal is still pretty cluttered.

    Heard north end was cleaner

Don't know about Severne launch, but across the lake from there water was muddy today, didn't notice anything big in the water.

  9. I'm not sure if my truck has a brake problem or transmission.  Who in the area ( Ovid ) north or south of the lake would be a good person to take it to and have it checked out ????

    Thanks

    Ed

You could try Route 89 Auto- 607-532-4356, or 139 Auto, couldn`t find a number.  Good luck.

  10. You're right  about the fishing Kev. I took one of my biggest Seneca rainbows right off the old pier (10 lbs 6 oz weighed at Harmon's Sport Shop) in my junior year of high school on a spinning rod with 6 lb test line (no net) and a red and white daredevil....even after all these years I remember it as though it was yesterday

Ah Ha!!  Skipping school to go fishing!  Someone from Geneva told me a while back you mainly skipped to spend time in the pool hall.  I always thought you were a bit of a slacker...:)   (just got back from running to the boat to pull the drain plug, fuel tanks were starting to float)

  11. Yeah it is the reason Hop gave me the name White Porcupine many years ago (all the rods sticking up on my Whaler)  They do give you some strange looks at the launch ramps when you are all alone in the boat with 16 or 18 rods sticking up and I've aso had the DEC guys check me out on the water a couple times because of it :)

What a lot of guys probably don`t realize is that at the time you were fishing out of a 13 foot whaler bathtub with all those rods.  Fortunately, you started catching bigger fish and were forced to get a bigger boat!  :)

  12. Assembled a new r and g near the showboat last year, they are phasing them out. took a while to get because of parts avalibility. You could give todds car and home audio a call, he sells and installs many docks and lifts. Sometimes knows of used. 1315 521 6804 that is todds number

Thanks for the number, will give Todd a call.  I knew they were phasing those hoists out, seems to me another example of "let`s change something for the sake of change and screw up something we already had that was good in the process."

  13. Use can use them for any thing u need to get deep with not a lot of line I dont pull two rigs any more because I can't find any fresh water outriggers any where if someone has a set of dot lines and dont want them I got money or trad

If you are molding any up I`d love to buy two.

  14. Mike I am pretty sure that the Geneva spoons preceeded the MIller's and the swivel is definitely from real  early on and I had one of those heart shaped ones too but I'm unable to find it so I'm pretty sure

Les, I do believe I included a new "Geneva" spoon in your "Christmas" bag.  I have several, even the old Geneva card they were sold on.  Not sure if I picked them up at a yard sale or perhaps were  mixed in with a bunch of the old "Pine Valley" stuff I got.

  15. Have the ML2....I shoot same powder and grains with TC super glides. Devestating.

TC Super Glide-will have to look for them.  Would like to find something heavier than my current 245 gr. that is just as accurate.  A bit more "slamin power" in case of a less than perfect placement.  Headed out now-two more sits for this season for me!

  16. Yes ur gun misfireing should not be happening those guns are really nice I looked all over trying to find one before I bought Myn! I shoot an all stainless Omega. I may have to do some research and see if I can find anyone else having issues with ur model.

Yes, I know it shouldn`t be happening.  That was kind of the purpose of my post to Legacy-he screwed up on a buck by looking at his phone, I screwed up by not using proper sealant on breach plug and nipple.  I bought that gun some time ago the second year they came out and have loved it ever since.  As much as I hate to admit it, it`s me, not the gun. :)
