  1. Its from one of the seals where the shaft slides into the upper unit. I must of damaged it trying to install the lower half. Watched a install of the seals, that's where the spring came from. Glad I found it this way rather on the water under way.... This week looks like a lot of rain so I'll be trying to start unhooking the motor pull it out. 2. Not sure. I got it back together. I had to loosen up the housing some. Just snugged it down. I think your right tho because I bought a whole rebuild kit minus the gears this spring and didn't need them... If I recall maybe one seal had something like that in it. I haven't explored what's involved in that. I did find another 120. Hopefully its in better shape then mine. I have all brand new parts lol. Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  3. Trying to get the lower unit back on. Doesn't appear to be anything in the way after removing the spring( still can't find it in exploded version ), I turn the shift counter clock wise for forward and try to spin the prop to see if the drive shaft would move to align the splines, nothing. Prop shaft free spins, turn clock wise, same deal. I can't remember what we did early spring to get it to slide the last 1" or 2... Video I watched makes it look easy... Figure I'm missing lm something or I put something together wrong? Out drive worked before I played with it Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  4. Great... Looking at the exploded version I cant see anything that looks like a small spring. Is it in one of the seals? No way to get low into the upper without taking the gears out... I heard that if that's the case buying a new upper is easier... Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  5. Any idea what this is? It came out of the top of my out drive when repairing the impeller. Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  7. Yep. Going to try to part it out... Not looking to spend another $1800 for the rebuild... Maybe if the motor would last 10 years but still looking at $700 for a manifold eventually and add an elbow at $250, that's almost another $1000... Never again but I learned something out of it all.... I get how motors work, before all I knew was they needed air fuel and spark.... More to it then that... To bad I didn't have all the tools to fix it, I'd just finish the project... No garage to work in and the cost of tools is close to the rebuild....guess the max HP is the nail in the coffin... I tried to find info on plugging the hole and sticking an outboard on it but I couldn't find to much info on length of bracket, one article said it could be up to $4k for a bracket. 8. I've looked at a lot. Close I found was a 170 for a drop in but if rated max 120... That makes that to big and the 140 to big... Maybe I miss read it since its old but I'm 99% sure it says 120 max HP... So rebuild... Or run it til she blows... I already got $1700 in parts and who knows how much in labor... Plus the boats cost... I would hate to dump another $1500 into it... Plus a floor... I really like the fact its aluminum... Sucks I can basically stick one motor in it I tries Rochester, Syracuse, Ithaca, finger lakes... Buffalo is a little far Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  9. Yup, isn't rated for it just checked. So I'm stuck with looking for a new motor, or rebuild... Can't find a motor... What a waste of money and time Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  10. Max rating for my boat is 120 HP... Don't understand how a 18' larson fiber glass can have a 305, but my aluminum can't... Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  11. Thanks. Gotta look at HP rating. It might be to much for my boat even tho its coming out of 18' fiber glass. Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  12. Thanks. I'll problem need some luck. Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  13. Ah yeah throw $2000 away? You got $2k to throw in the trash... If you do please send it my way... Even if it don't fit... The price I'm getting it for is only $250, I can sell the motor, the out drive, and the trailer and still be ahead even if the exhaust manifolds are bad... Even if i pay the $1500 for the motor to be repaired... Its cheaper then buying a bunch more headaches... As far as the Hull, its old thick aluminum... No leaks... I don't want the aluminum of today, or fiber glass that is wood, fiber, and resin that wills rot. So yes its worth putting another motor in it... The floor replacement is easy, and I use to paint for a company that restored Tractor Trailers, beer trailers, and pick ups... Paint is no problem...Pulling a motor, putting it back in and aligning it doesn't look that hard... Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  14. How hard is it to upgrade to a v6 in aluminum? The mounts are what mostly worry me. I was told all the holes in the transom will match up. Also warned about the weight difference but the boat I'm getting out of it is also a 18' fiber glass. Its a 305 or 350. They say 305 but pretty sure its a 350. Comes with the out drive, no milk in the oil, I worry about the exhaust manifolds and elbows. Any idea how to check them without taking them off? I imagine their bad since the motor hasn't been ran in "few years". The other thing I'm worried about is if they winterized it. Any way to check with out dumping all their anti freeze out? I'm getting it for real cheap. If it works out I can sell my out drive to cover the cost of the whole motor and out drive. Mostly worried about the elbows and manifolds... They can be expensive Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  15. I've got a lot of emails and stuff out. Thanks for the info about the holes in the transom. That was my biggest worry being aluminum, I didn't really think about the weight, I was worried about how it would mount in, and the holes in the transoms for the gimbal housing. I'm 100% new to I/o but I think I got it down. Lady said its a 305 Ford, kinda figured it might be OMC but if I remember right it had a MC out drive. I'm not to worried, she says it hasn't ran in a few years... And I don't need another rebuild... Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  16. I'd like to upgrade to a newer motor. Main concerns are the gimbal housing/bearing and transom plate. Will I have to change that with a 1990+ motor? Pre alpha and alpha 1 will match if I remember right, only got to change the upper if I upgrade to v6 or v8. I been trying to find out how much of a pain it would be to change the engine mounts... But at this point, the rebuild is the same price as a new or used motor... I found a few boats near me, but one is a 89 mc 2.8... Guy insist its gas but I can only find it as a Cummings diesel. Looking at another that they say is a 305 Ford but I couldnt find any ford motors in Mercs to compare too. Just figured it was a 350, but it hasn't been ran in years... She is only asking $250 tho Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  17. I remember doing that with my uncle when I was a kid. If I remember right you can still do this as long as the stream doesn't have trout in them correct? Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  18. Thanks! Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  19. Thanks I'll check it out. Any idea if an omc 120 will match and merc alpha? Everything I read pretty much says no because the transom is different Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  20. Will consider v6 but will need full out drive or just upper half. Thanks Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  21. Probably why there not taken me serious. Better for the machine shop to order the stuff? Total rebuild quote was $1200 to $1500. Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  22. Waiting on Barret for parts price. Machine shop quoted $80 to bore and hone. Pulling the motor out shouldn't be to hard. Neighbor has a chain hoist. Most likely go with the rebuild because of what I got into it. Got all winter to wait for the machine shop to get to it but sounds like it could be done pretty quick. Basically waiting on parts. I didn't ask them about cleaning up the crank but if their only charging me $20 a cylinder turning the crank can't be to much more. They were going to measure to see if it needed to be bored or not. As old as it is and the abuse its been threw I imagine it does. I've learned a lot while doing this. Defiantly a good set of skills to have Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  23. I take him serious. After one time breaking down... Its not worth it. Any thing I do now is a test run, under flat conditions. After what lake posted, I need to price out parts or consider a new boat. I just hate giving up on stuff Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  24. I've been stranded before. It sucks. I have a kicker so I wouldn't be stranded but I don't intend to use the boat now that its getting this late in the year and less people on the water. I found a machine shop in Geneva that everyone says has a good price and I can watch the work as its being done. I guess now everything comes down to price. Its a winter project or a spring time sale. Its not a sellers market right now. I'm going to rebuild the carb also. Kit with accelerator pump is $30 with taxes. The breather fell off the other day when I limped in. We re timed it yesterday and had a little issue at first with it dieing out ( sounded like it was sucking to much air), mechanic said that the acceleration pump was probably going or something could got sucked in and plugged the carb. Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  25. Thanks for the info. I don't plan on using it now that you put it that way. I can put a magnet in the pan for metal correct? I'm just amazed I got something to work lol. What you say about my boat motor gets me worried about my Stump grinder. Lots smoke out its breather and that thing takes so much abuse... Sent from my XT1528 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
