  1. Wel this is my first year fishing the big O in many years. I grew up trolling out of Hughes in Williamson and was hooked as a kid. Well some 30+ years later I have started trolling the lake again out of I Bay. I have had pretty good success finding and putting up lakers with several double digit days with an 18lb being our best. We have boated a few browns, steelies and a coho but nothing consistent. I would like to put a few kings on the deck and have FF, and dodger Jplug set ups. DR, DD, and planer boards with mast. I usually run 8 rods out of the boat just cant seem to find the fish. Yeah I know join the club, everything I have read has been that this year is a tough bite and the fact that I have been on 4 charters this year with 3 trips yielding only 1 fish and another trip being stellar. The captains have been outstanding taking time to teach and answer all my questions. I have the basics down just dont know what depth water to target this time of year when starting at 5pm. Have the fished moved out during the day because of the high sun and should I being starting in 80'-120' or should I stay inside 40' and target shallower? Tough this time of year with the sun going down so early so would like to get into the zone. I typically fish either between shipbuilders to bear creek or head west and fish the Genny west to the ponds. Going to head west tomorrow and try the Genny. Thanks for any insight. Tight lines Terry
  2. Thanks guys I got out tonight out of Ibay and headed down to Hedges had no problems running the divers out like you said. Now if I could only find some fish. I stayed in shallow because some of my buddies have put a few salmon and browns up off of the local piers but I only marked a few fish and didnt see much bait either. Heading out tomorrow night after work and heading west toward the Genny. Is it too early to be in shallow in the evening? What depth should I be targeting? I would like to pick up some kings, browns or steelies. Thanks Terry
  3. Sea IV I will try running the downriggers at 45 degrees a few times and see how that works. Mudflat Thanks I was thinking 9 or 9 1/2 due to the bend in the rod with the diver. Great advice about lifting the rear rod, I did not think of that. Sk8man thanks for confirming the set up as well, I dont run anything down the chute as I dont have enough extra rod holders to move it to when fiting a fish. If your longest DD rod is 8 1/2 what is your other size? Jimski2 My track and DR have been in position all season and are in ideal locations for set up and operation now thanks. Also just confirming that a downrigger off the side (90 or 45 degrees) and two dipsy diver rods on a 36" track is what you guys are running when you say you run a similar set up. Terry
  4. I currently have 36" traxstech tracks on each side of the boat located as rearward as I can. I have a DR and 2 Berts ratcheting rod holders per side (the DR has one rod holder also). The DR is located all the way to the rear most position with the first rod holder placed in the middle and the next at the far end of the track (basically 0/18/36). The DRs I run to the side not off the back to avoid cable/kicker motor damage and spread my lines out. I typically run two lines (stacker) on each DR and one dipsy on each side. I would like to run two dipsy's on each side but am concerned about the distance between the rod holders and the length of my DR arms. I would like to add dual rod holders to the DR and utilize the middle ratcheting rod holder for another dipsy one set at 1.5 and one at 3. I have 42" arms on the DR (ran off of the side) I have 10 1/2' DD rods I run in the far end of the 36" track now (no problems with tangles when running at 1.5 on DD) I would like to buy another pair of DD rods to run in the middle positions of the track but do not know if I should be looking at 7', 7.5', 8', 8.5', 9', 9.5' rods. My thoughs are if I have the DR off the side 42" and the current 10.5' off the side 126" then a 7' or 84" rod would be right in the middle but I don't want the diver tangling with the rigger cable, after the rod flexes I know it will be closer to the cable. Anyone running a set up similar (DD rod holder 18" from DR and 18" from second DD rod holder) that could tell me what two length rods you are running? Thanks Terry
  5. Thanks haven't taken the boat out that far yet, it's 20' Lund Tyee. Not sure how many miles off shore that is exactly and want to make sure I have a good forecast before heading out.
  6. Started out targeting kings in the morning with just one release on a dodger squid but missed him. Moved into 130-150 east of Hedges and put my buddies on 7 lakers with the best at 18lbs. My one friend had never caught a laker and he had some fun. Still looking to boat my first King on this boat
  7. The cable coating is stripped at the thimble and the crimp. Wish I could get this figured out
  8. Ok so here is the photo, again this is exactly how I received it and have not tried to clean it or put any new liquid tape on it yet. Thanks for your help and ideas. Anyone in I-Bay that can would be willing to test my probe on their set up? Thanks Terry
  9. Tried to add a pic but I don't see it
  10. This is how I received it. I did buy some liquid tape but was trying to test it before changing anything.
  11. I checked the board and I am getting the 9v at the board where the +/- connect so I know the battery connection is at least working, there was tape wrapped around the old battery and connector to help keep them connected. I did try spinning the wheel and I am getting nothing, it is still sleeping. I dont have anything connected below the probe at this time ball etc.. I will try connecting something to the other connector to see if that helps. Unfortunately this is my first year on I Bay with a boat, I moved here last year from Caledonia and fished conesus not a lot of need for D/R and speed/temp units down there.
  12. Heading out again this weekend, any report on Kings,Steelies, or Browns?
  13. Ok so I installed a new 9V (tested good at 9.6v) and still nothing on the head unit other than the back light and a decimal point. Will the unit work if it is not spooled onto a DR? I ran a ground wire from the head unit/Analog dial to water. Is a ground wire required from the antenna to water?
  14. Thanks Bob, I did add the ground wire to the bucket with no change.
  15. Headed out early with my buddy and his son. Targeted Lakers with cowbells and glow peanuts from Shipbuilders to Hedges in 130-150 FOW and did a dozen in just a few hours with several doubles and a few that didn't make it into the boat. Moved to 200' and had a big fish taking line on the DR 150 down. Let my buddies 10 year old take the rod and after 20 minutes he had to tap out and give the rod to dad. He fought it about 10 more minutes and about 100' behind the boat the line broke. We never got a look but I think I know a couple of guys that are hooked on trolling as this is their first year fishing like this. Terry
  16. I just picked up a used unit from a guy that bought a boat that had it on it but doesn't plan on using the boat for trolling. In any case he couldn't tell me if it worked properly other than the previous owner said it works. So I figured I would try to bench test it before stripping the DR cable off mounting and wiring etc... I have what I believe to be the entire set up. I have the head unit and mount, power cable with inline fuse, RCA cable ~ 25', short spring style antenna cable, coated DR cable (length unknown) attached to a probe. Again the coated DR cable is just laying in a pile on the work bench with one end attached to the probe and the other end threaded through the antenna. I have supplied power to the head unit and the back light illuminates and the depth decimal is present. I lowered the probe into a 5 gallon bucket of water to "test" the temp and this did not yield a value. After ohming the RCA cable it appears to be ok, performed the same test with the antenna again good. I read that the unit requires the ground to be in contact with the water and that another member had suggested dropping a ground wire into the bucket so I added this as well no change. I tested the voltage of the "new" 9v battery and it is only 7.6v so this maybe my problem will have to buy some new batteries tomorrow. Can I bench test this unit as described not installed on a DR and expect it to work? There is some rubber insulation on the cable crimp and loop attached to the probe. I am not sure how much should be there any pictures of this would be helpful. Looking forward to adding this to my setup soon. Thanks Terry
  17. Thanks for all the replies and insight. Momay 4000 Ok so maybe I was not clear in my first post. I do not want to add a slider or fixed cheater to my cowbell rig. I just want to get another rod in the water above the cowbell on the same D/R. Sammy Dog/Sk8man thanks I was thinking that the cowbell set up spinning around would most likely catch the top line on its way up that is why I haven't done it but was wondering if it is a safe practice. You guys have confirmed my thoughts that it will just be trouble. So when fishing a F/F set up on the bottom is it safe to run a F/F on the top line or is it just a spoon with no attractor?
  18. Hi everyone this is my first post to the site however I have been reading as much as I could for the past two months this isite is dull of great information. I have been trolling for now many years and have stacked lines in several different ways using slip sliders, fixed sliders, and also second rods with fixed releases. I have always done this while trolling only spoons on both the high and low lines. Recently I went on a charter and was introduced to the cowbell peanut setup and we hammered the lakers. I bought a bunch of set ups and have done pretty well myself with them fishing only one line on the D/R. I want to add more lines in the water and I have a few questions 1) When running a cowbell on the bottom do you guys run stackers above them or do they get tangled when released from a fish or bottom? 2) When running any kind of stacker is the top line always just a spoon, plug, diver, etc.. without a flasher/dodger/spin dr? 3) What distances above the cowbell will you run the stacker and how far back (in general) I run my cowbells 10-15' off the ball? 4) Also does the same apply if I am running a dodger/flasher spin dr on the bottom instead of a cowbell? Thanks everyone Terry
