  1. Yah, no doubt, I have had the same experience. I am looking forward to fishing this weekend but if weather and wife permit I will be going to Cayuga for the afternoon. I heard the lamprey are doing a number on the lakers there. I agree about the rainbow but I am not seeing anything from 0-50 ft on my sonar.. I'll try going in shallower next time.

September is usually tough on skn.
Thermocline is a bit deeper than usual this year maybe from that hot July?!.... I caught a 24 in salmon in 55-58 fow 2 weeks ago. My deepest salmon ever there.

Set up to fish55-90 right now n it should produce. Don’t leave fish to find fish.

  3.  I have yet to catch a laker on skinny jigging myself...  I had one good one on and lost it halfway up last fall, but thats been it... I stick  to perch and bass there pretty much, as I don't troll.
I can't say why, but I just don't mark any concentrations of fish there the way I do on Cayuga/Seneca/Keuka... Guys catch them there, but personally for the life of me, I just never mark a lot of fish on Skaneateles..
Guys catch  lakers there while  perch fishing all the time, even on worms, so its MY problem, not the lakes.. Haven't caught a Walleye there yet either..

Take the drive to Cayuga and jig there some early morning.. Its worth it when you hit them right. They are much bigger, and easier to find there... bob

    When we jig on skn.
We use 1.5 oz smiling bill jig heads painted white with white soft plastic tubes lwith black fleck on them. Try trimming 2/3 of the tube fringe off the tail end of tube.

That has produced some big lakers over the years.

  4. Yeah the boat traffic is definitely picking up at an earlier time. People were waterskiing within 30 yards of us at 9am ... the boat traffic seems to cause the fishing ( especially for silvers) to shut down very quickly

Weekend boat traffic from 10 am on is usually high. I have picked up a few nice silvers this summer. Skn is a weird lake. You can have the best day of your life, or take your lures for a wash. Fishing was great through mid June.
The last few weeks have been tough, I think because of the unusually hot weather impacting water temps.

  5. Wow.  What a fish.

Fished Tuesday night n Thursday am.
    Tuesday night we slammed em’
Thursday morning couldn’t buy a bite. But I bet Thursday Afternoon was great with that nice wind that rolled up.

Thermocline is set up around 40-45 ft depending on location of the lake.
Marked tons of fish n bait on the west shore mid lake Thursday am.

  6.  I  pass Forest Fishery in Homer on the way, but am  not sure if they still carry bait.. Their site no longer mentions it.. If not, are there any other local places to get a few dozen minnows?.. Taking my 7 YO grandson tp Skinny in my boat and have worms, but some live minnows will give him a better shot at something more sizeable than a rock bass, perch or pumpkinseed,,, bob

Penny at the new hope naturals store has fatheads n worms.
Not sure what her hours are though.

  7. Finally got a chance to get on the lake and look for some silver. Was honored to be accompanied by one of my brothers who is a retired blackhawk pilot. He hasn't fished much in the last few years and asked him if he wanted to take an exploratory trip for silver fish. Got up to camp Tuesday afternoon and the usual spots didnt produce much except small bows, finally copper rod fires with a good RIP and we bring an extremely skinny Male to the net.......with lack of seeing bait balls this was concerning to me. We finished with another keeper bow and had some thinking to do about today's plan. First thing this morning found my temp and took a chance at staging copper and core above and out of the temp. First spot no takers, second spot, no takers, third........game on.....and the circling began.....bows, browns and smallmouth.....and we lost count......fought weeds, minimal fleas, and red boats but put the plan together......as always....coppers and cores for me......riggers were slow but took some of the biggest. West and east were both good as you'll see by pics......just be patient, stay committed to the top.....if you catching Lakers, adjust, and dont leave em to find them. Remember to circle and adjust speed. Ran 2.5-3.0 on surface.......color didnt matter. Kept a couple, returned most, and they shot straight down to get out of the bath water. Great day over all. Hardly and jumping.....they wanted to stay down and were still full of it in the net.

  8. Any report on Skaneateles? Thinking of heading over that way this week

Picking up Lakers and bows on small spoons, medium spoons n swim baits running everything on surface to 55 ft down over 55-120 feet of water.

Pickerel fishing on the south end at dawn and dusk is dynamite with medium sided casting spoons.

Small mouth action is picking up.
The warm water fish are livening up.

  10. Awesome!!!!!  I hope the walleye  continue to flourish!  I'm itching to get over there to target them.  Maybe you weren't targeting them or perhaps wish they weren't there, but sounds like the walleye made the trip!  Out of curiosity why do you feel you can't have both warm and cold water species.  You already have better perch and bass than trout.  They haven't stocked owasco in over a decade and walleye continue on and the trout fishing is good as well.  Don't drink all the Kool aid that is served in finger lakes...the evil walleye isn't all that scary...just delicious!!!!

I’m not anti warm water fish or warm water fishing. I target walleye and bass often. And do feel that both types of fish can flourish and coexist. Getting to eat walleye is always a treat. And catching these monsters is pretty fun. I just feel that the walleye in large numbers may alter the state of the lake, but time will be the telling factor. I love fishing for and catching the cold water fish. The DEC seems to feel the numbers are down because of the walleye. Is that true? I don’t know. But either way based on the walleye I’ve landed this year they are here to stay and we outta get used to it and target them for for eating.

  11. Hey y’all

Today my dad was in town, we call him slappy or ol’ man Gep. At breakfast we joked about a trophy fish n reminisced previous trips with our annual trip to Ontario coming up in 3 weeks. With the showers forecasted we weren’t in a rush to do much this morning. Then we finally got motivated to go out.

Me n slappy n the boys finally went out around 1130 for a mid day troll. My five year old started out landing a 16 in salmon in the first five minutes.

Then the lead core fired and I was gonna give it to one of the kids, butttt.....

it was heavy and I knew it was big.

I was expecting a salmon or a bow as I had a deep diver n 3.5 colors of lead core out.

As slap reeled it to the boat I thought maybe it’s a gigantic large mouth then at about 50 feet away I could see it was a walleye.

Biggest one I’ve ever seen with my own eyes. We fished for another 45 minutes and had some riggers fire but no more fish.

I love fishing. I went to DEC meeting in homer this spring and am an advocate for skn remaining a cold water fishery. How the walleye were introduced into this lake I don’t know. This year, I have boated a 25 inch walleye last month and today was 27.5 inches and 7.6lbs. But this trophy will be delightful in my frying pan this evening and making a memory with my father and the kids for generations.

Fishing with family and friends is the greatest!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Hey just checking in with any potential shore anglers here regarding the marshmallow/ worm action from skaneateles lately? I have been experiencing a pretty steady drop off in Fish caught the past 3 seasons or so, anyone else experiencing this or just my spot? Thanks!

  14. Hey all,

We decided last minute to go out Sunday for a few hours. Left Ithaca at 9. Got to Taughannock at 920. The launch is in great shape. An easy 20 to 25 inches of water depth clearance, and Plenty of clearance for the 20 ft center console to get under the bridge and outta the cut. After a battery switch and that off season reconsideration of.... should we go into the wind so if the old girl quits we will get blown home, we were in the water and running well.
We headed south and started setting gear once the electronics started marking fish.
Set the first rigger and bam. It was on. The bite was on from 945-11 went 4 for 8. With 2 7-9 lb lakers, a 4 lb bow and a dink salmon. Then it shut down. We pulled it at 1215 with family stuff like tree gathering and gutter cleaning to do....and went home to grill.
Tons of fish at Taughannock outlet. Lots of marks between 10 and 35 over 35/50. And huge pods of bait and lakers out at 150 in 250/300 ft south 2/3 miles south of Taughannock on the west side. IMG]https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181205/dbdaf03a3d64ed1cb8b36bcec86ea359.jpg[/img]

  15. Based upon past years, it usually depends upon snowfall.  I have launched as late as mid-December.  Both docks were still in as of last Thursday, although there was not a single trailer in the parking lot..  I would anticipate mid-November unless lack of boat inspection budget has an impact.

Seveys on the west side was open last weekend. The glen haven is shallow right now. 18-20 in deep at the cut. No big boats are getting through there.

  16. Time for a reality check. Walleyes are expensive to raise for stocking. Like double the cost of trout. NYS struggles to produce enough walleye for the waters it wants to stock, so some waters are only stocked every other year instead of annually. I don't see walleye stocking expanding to the central Finger Lakes at the expense of fisheries more suited to walleye.

We think of sawbellies as baitfish, and they are. We don't tend to think of them as predators, but we should. They vacuum up newly hatched fry of both lake trout and walleye in huge numbers. I have one source (Saunders) that blames the destruction of the native walleye population in Owasco on the introduction  the sawbelly (Alewife). Some think that the current problem on Seneca s related to the abundant sawbelly population. DEC had cut laker stocking due to the number of wild lakers present, however that natural recruitment doesn't appear to be happening. Sawbellies will eat lake trout fry during the first two months of life. Given Seneca's huge Alewife population, it's a wonder any wild lakers survive. Less stocking and less reproduction, (plus a large, hungry lamprey population) equals lousy fishing.

I have read that walleyes can live for 20 years. No wonder that they are still present in Owasco. Give the sawbellies time, history will repeat itself, and the walleye will be nothing but a memory.

    Hey guys.
I have caught 2 walleyes in skn in the last month. I remembered this thread and wanted to post this pic from 10-13-18.
