  1. Again, I appreciate the people who brought this up. I’ve motored by hundreds and hundreds of people in the Spring over the last 5 years and not a single person spoke up. So thank you! It’s my fault not knowing the law during cold water periods, and honestly, have been doing it unknowingly for years. I’ve most likely got away with it for so long because my boat is just under the 21’ mark, but there’s no excuse. Safety anywhere is a priority, and none of us want to be hurt or see others hurt. For a split second I thought about deleting this post, but if my wrongdoing and humility can help educate other small boat fishermen, great. Rookie - Thank you, and it is a girl, that will be cutting into my summertime trolling.... but maybe our annual shark fishing trip in September will make up for it. 2. Definitely appreciate the heads up. Not sure why I thought it was vessels 16’ or less. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  4. First troll of the year. We like to fish lakers in early spring instead of browns in close. The charters and other fishermen can have them. We slide out and have an open lake. Several triples, many doubles, and after the first two hours we started experimenting lures/presentations and running gear 40’ over 70’ of water to limit catches. Too much action tired out the pregnant first mate very quickly. Spoons took the first five fish, then not another hit all day. Switched out different colors, sizes, presentations to no avail. Flasher/flies took most everything else, but a few stickbaits on the downrigger fooled some too. Kept a 3-4 color core and x-rap in the water most of the day. Took a hard rip in 100’ but nothing attached, then back to back lakers in 70’. Those two lakers were the largest we landed, around 14-16lbs. Marked some nice fish at 25-30’ in 70’ of water, but just going to chalk them up as suspended spotted perch (lakers). Sonar waypoints of fish hooked showed 49, not counting the doubles/triples, subtract 5-6 lost, multiply that by 2, divide by 2.3, add 17, end with the square route squared and that might be the number you’re hoping to see. We had fun as always. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  5. Ended up with Krenzer’s. I didn’t think they had dry dock storage, but I called them as I was taking the boat out. They beat everyone’s price by more than half. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  6. Thanks for the recommendation in Mexico, but the added mileage to that location would even out with the gas money and wear/tear. Someone mentioned Ernst Marina in Point Breeze, and the price is great, but having not fished that area, I’d be looking for all new waypoints. Katlynn’s in Sodus isn’t terrible. Decisions...... All the storage unit companies I called do not allow items to be stored outside, otherwise I’d be good. Mike Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  7. Does anyone have input for a reasonably priced storage location for a 20’ bass boat around Sodus or Point Breeze? Looking to save wear/tear and gas from towing it 360 miles round trip every weekend. It wouldn’t need covered, just a secure location. Mike Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  8. Sorry for the late reply (again). Mag dipsy on 0 back 150'-200' took the nicest fish. Estimated 80'-100' down. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  9. I only run dipsys. 2 standard dipsys on a #1 at 150' with a flasher fly, and a mag dipsy at #0 with flasher fly will always produce numbers and take a few solid lakers and LL. Depth and location never seems to matter, as long as there isn't grass or any other obstructions to the line or bait. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  10. Launched out of Taughannock Falls dark and early. I decided to head South and try a new pattern for the morning. Not a hit for hours, but grass was a serious problem. Switched one rod over to a spoon and took a 2lb brown. The skunk was off, but this pattern sucked. We headed up lake and set my normal laker/landlock setup. Consistent fish from there on. Didn't boat many big boys like the last trip, but did ok. Took a few fish on the larger SD and 5"-6" flies, but once we switched to the 8" SD and 3"-4" flies, hits picked up. Fish came in 60' - 400', all lines ran with a dipsy set anywhere between 20'-100'. My leadcore down the chute didn't take a hit all day. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  12. Canning meats and stews is addicting. Shortly thereafter, it's time to buy a storage cabinet or build one! Salmon from the lake canned with Old Bay tastes like fresh blue crab cakes. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  13. Thanks for the info. Next time I'll switch from my natural colors and experiment with the reds, oranges, and pinks. It may be my trolling speed, but I'm limited to idle and however fast the wind/current takes me based on direction. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  14. Doubles while solo always get the adrenaline pumping!!! Excellent!
  15. You're welcome. We had a great weekend. It was my father's first trip for Ontario trolling and my third for kings. I think we did ok. The salmon were down 75'-95', mag dipsys on 0 at 150' and #1 dipsys on 1 at 250'.
  16. I'm jealous! I can't seem to find them?! It was the third time I've tried leadcore. We took some small guys in close during the am, but lakers and LL. Ran mag spoons down to 2 1/2" slim spoons. Planers, flashers, dodgers, naked...didn't help. Maybe next time I'll try the stickbaits. I've heard rainbows prefer the upper water column and was trying to fish 20-40'. Is that about right?
  17. Cayuga 8/19 Late report. Launched out of Taughannock (sp?) for the first time. Started a North troll on the West side, regularly picking up small fish. Landlocks and lakers. Tried jigging some lakers, but it didn't work out. Hooked two and lost them both. I haven't figured out the rainbow game on Cayuga, so I tried a something a little new. We trolled South, down the middle, with #1 Dipsys on a 3 setting at 125', 5 colors of leadcore down the chute, and a mag dipsy on 0 at 200'. Figured I could catch some lakers while trying to cover the top of the water column. We doubled regularly, lots of nice lake trout, and some decent landlocks, but no bows. The biggest fish were hitting the 125' on a 3, and the core never took a hit. All spoon colors and sizes worked, but flasher flies took the majority of fish. Biggest landlock was 6lbs, and laker 12lb. Only 4 fish in the middle were under 4lbs, with several lakers over 10. I was surprised with the size of fish on this trip. We left at 12:30 and headed north for kings.
  18. Sodus 8/19-20 After hitting Cayuga in the AM, my father and I launched out of Sodus around 4:30. Didn't mark much of anything between 120-200. Took one in 150' and another hit but nobody was home. Sunday morning, started around 6:46 in 120' and headed out to 220'. Not a hit and few marks. Trolled back in and smacked a king in 138'. We were going to call it quits once the dipsies started dragging bottom on the way back in, but once we hit 100', game on. 5 quick ones in about 30 minutes of fishing time to finish the day. A West troll in 100' put 4 kings on deck, but the East troll on the same track only did 1 coho. Dipsy with FF. Ran leadcore with a variety of spoons, but nada.
  19. July 30-31 I caught kings in 74'-150', 4lb-18lb with a few small browns and lakers mixed in. The action was ok mid-day and hot in the evening. The following Sunday, not a hit between 5:30-8:30AM, but marked good bait and a few fish. Went back out at 9:30, but the fiancé got motion sick so we returned to the docks after 45 minutes or so. On the 30th, I ran out to 400-550 (based on reports) for 2 hours without a hit or mark. After the run back in to 120' I had a king in minutes. I believe that was after a South wind over the course of a few days. Was going to try this weekend, but my bass boat gets a little tough to fish out of in 12-15mph West winds. Cayuga will most likely be my destination.
  20. Thanks for the info. Swung by Krenzer's for the 10th time and the owners happened to be there. We're all set. Thanks again
  21. Stranded in Sodus This is not a report but I hope is the best way to reach someone. I had a wheel bearing go out this morning and no marinas are open to get a new one. All auto stores do not have any that fit. Does anyone have information on marine stores open Sunday close to sodus bay? I'm 3 hours from home and have no ideas on what else to try.
  22. Thanks for the input and replies. I will keep an eye out for your boats the next time up. Hoping to fish Tuesday unless the weather changes for Sunday. I run a 20' G3 Eagle Talon (G3 eagle wrap with a minn Kota talon on the port side). What model/type of single hooks do you guys use with consistent hook-land ratios. Most of my landed fish on trebles had a deep hook, which means they wanted the fly 100%. That leads me to believe it was the hook style that caused me to drop so many on singles. A single hook point requires 66% less energy to penetrate than a treble (if each point makes contact)! I'm thinking a snell knot octopus style would be better than the finesse wide gap I used, due to the hook point angle when rigged.
  23. After reading a few posts on here about trolling Cayuga, I thought I'd give it a serious try considering Lake O was calling for 30mph winds. Trolling for trout and salmon is new to me, but water temps and fish behavior is not. Launched my bass boat out of Myer's around 8 and headed for the closest and steepest drop shown on my Garmin. 10 minutes in I dropped a bow and laker at the boat. The action continued until 11ish when I decided food outweighed the fight with waves. I fished one rod between 9-10:30 because 1 or 2 minutes down resulted in a bite. I pulled back into the lot and rigged up as a few guys in the derby were taking out and mingling (1 o'clockish). Thought about introducing myself, but my saltwater gear turned into trolling gear made me feel out of place. Went back out to the morning location and was plagued by small landlocks that couldn't even trip the dipsy's. Headed north for 2 hours to explore and not a bite. When I headed back down lake south of Myer's, I only managed two more landlocks about 17-18". For what it's worth, I was running dipsys out 150' in the AM, 250' in the PM. GPS speeds of 2.75-3.5. Spoons had 1 bow and 1 LL. Everything else was on flashers and tube flies I made. 3 Lakers, 1 bow, and 14 landlocks made it in the boat. I lost more than I landed, which frustrates me and I want to know why. Many were lost as soon as they broke surface beside the boat. I prefer to run a single hook for releasing purposes, but I started to actually land fish consistently when running a gamakatsu treble on my flies. My single hook was a gamakatsu finesse wide gap with a snelled knot. Any input on alternate hooks would be appreciated or maybe the softer action of fiberglass rods is required? Mike
