  1. Question - what have you guys had that would be similar to our mass-marking survey? Anything? Sent from my SM-G930V using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  2. Jimski2 - if you check out the Michigan-Sportsman website, under 'cold water fishing' there's multiple threads pertaining to the top to bottom effects the mussels have had. The guy to pay attention to on that site would be Cork Dust. He's a retired biologist that has a great understanding of the ecosystem and he doesn't hold back like current FnG/DNR employees would. 3. Coming from Lake Michigan (which I'm sure many of you are aware of what we're going through), I feel I should chime in. From what I see both on Facebook, this site, as well as other forums - I think some of you need to take a step back and put things in perspective. In Lake Ontario you're missing 2 year classes of alewives. In Lake Michigan were lucky if we HAVE 2 year classes. Be thankful they want to keep numbers up. Sure some boats struggled this year. In my 24 years on the great lakes, I've found the truth is every year there will be boats that struggle. No one is on top forever and no boat is destined to forever be last place. The key is adapting as fishermen. Not a single one of us - including the charters - will be a hero everyday. As far as stocking is concerned - a 20% cut is nothing. On Michigan, we dealt with a cut 3 times that amount - all while they're stocking trout at 8-10 times the numbers you're seeing. We still caught kings. Be thankful they're (DEC) cutting those (trout) as well. It shows they DO want balance. An ounce of prevention now beats a pound of pain further down the road. The fact is you guys have an amazing silver fishery. The last thing you want is to have it develop into a situation where there IS no control other than what mother nature decides to bless you with. 4. I should make note that we're fishing Lake Michigan, but the fish still - in general - react the same. If you're in an area where there's few/no marks AND no action, there's no point in sticking around. It's time to move. If you've got good marks/bait, play with your spread until it starts firing. I'm typically the one working the deck on our boat and if my 'work queue' is any less than 5 things, I'm being lazy. I'm always doing something - whether it be changing a bait, adjusting a lead, adjusting depth, or resetting lines - I'm always busy. Sent from my SM-G930V using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  5. Less is more in most cases. The key more often than not is getting your spread to work as a unit (spread dynamics). We prefer a thinner spread - regardless of how many we have on board. While we CAN run as many as 15 lines off our boat, we typically never run more than 8, and most times its 6 or less. This allows for several things to happen - 1) less issue when fighting bigger fish, 2) easier/quicker to make spread adjustments, 3) easier/quicker to pull and run. Unless we're in a derby and we KNOW there's big fish around, if we don't get anything going in an hour or so, we're gone. Sent from my SM-G930V using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  6. Take a look at the Okuma Blue Diamond rods. We run that for our wire and it works great. For half the price of a Talora, you can't beat it. We also run the Okuma Classic Pro GLT for our copper and leadcore rods. We've never had a problem with any of them. I'm actually in the process of switching over our few remaining leadcore rods to these. Sent from my SM-G930V using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  7. X2 document all you can. Years ago I landed a coho 16+ lbs. It was late august and just starting to get a little bit of color to go with its hooked jaw. Big AND beautiful. Figuring I was going to mount it, I didn't bother with pictures. We wrapped it and put it in the freezer. A week later we left for Canada. While we were gone, a friend came to take fish for smoking. Needless to say, he took that fish as well. By the time he realized it was for mounting, it was too late. Sent from my SM-G930V using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  8. Pull the paddle wheel in the probe and sand the contact. In the 20 years we've run ours, that is the most common cause for signal loss. Sent from my SM-G930V using Lake Ontario United mobile app
