  1. No. They were the half paper half metal ones I grew up with in 1960 s. He showed me a thin cable with a swivel every ten feet or so with a good size weight on bottom. He explained that as you let it out you would clip on one of the spooned leaders The called it a Seth green rig and said that's how they would figure out how deep fish were. He had an old lapstreak wooden boat and was probably eighty years old at the time

Orange juice cans??   Strange...  Was he handlining?

  2. Clears it up perfectly. Thankyou

Maybe this will help clarify the number of hooks (hook points) question:

    Freshwater Fishing Regulations

    Methods of Taking Fish

    Angling

Angling means taking fish by hook and line. This includes bait and fly fishing, casting, trolling and the use of landing nets to complete the catch.

    • Anglers must be in immediate attendance when their lines are in the water.
      • The use of set lines where the angler is not in immediate attendance is prohibited.
    • An angler may operate no more than three lines with or without a rod.
      • each line is limited to not more than five lures or baits or a combination of both.
      • in addition, each line shall not exceed 15 hook points in any combination of single, double or treble hooks.
    • Snatching, lifting, hooking and use of tip-ups are not angling.

ie: a number 11 Rapala has 9 hook points (three treble hooks)

  3. Okay. Thank you. The older gentleman at canadagua lake had orange juice cans nailed to the sides of his wooden boat and had a spoon on a leader in each one I had never been on finger lakes before and thought he was wasting his time until he opened his cooler. Lesson learned

Theres no hook requirement anymore. However your limited to 5 lures

  4. How do you keep a Seth green rig legal for number of hooks on a line. Does it stay at nine hooks on a line over all for the sg rig. I've only seen these ride one time about thirty years ago and it had a bunch of hookup spots for baited leaders. Hope this makes sense

I know browns can get finicky about action I don’t spend much time in waters that have both that close to gather but I know when on Seneca when I used to pike fish it I never had a trout or salmon by catch (used small diameter black non coated steel) I don’t winter fish the boat though so by the time I’m out there now the pattern is marginally different and these days it’s lake O which the pike and browns are even less likely to be on the same troll

  5. Thanks for reply. Iwas told law had changed. Obviously I was misinformed. Thanks again

    Fish carcass disposal law

It is illegal to discard any fish carcass, or parts thereof, into the freshwaters of the state within 100 feet of shore or upon any public or private lands contiguous to and within 100 feet of such water, except:

    • On private lands by owners of such lands.
    • If properly disposing into suitable garbage or refuse collection systems or by burial.
    • Where incidental cleaning of fish for consumption is permitted. However, resulting waste may not be disposed of within 100 feet of any public launching or docking site unless into a suitable refuse collection system.
    • Live fish and fish which must be returned to the water because of size limits, open seasons and daily limits are not subject to the fish carcass disposal law.
