I see a lot of salmon pictures this year with scale damage all over

Are they coming to the boat cold with tons of energy? Thrashing in the net? Just a spring thing?

This is very common, & it has been happening for the last 30 years I have been Spring King fishing.

Is this your first Spring experience?

What caused you to loose half of your salmon?

Well, the governor did yesterday at Sodus Bay. "The most rainfall of all time". He could be the most out of touch person I've ever seen.

I put the probe on my second deepest rigger, to keep track of the thermocline, I don't believe it is necessary to run a dedicated rigger just for the probe.  Combine your probe reading (temp & speed) with the marks on the graph.  Sometimes the fish are way out of temperature, so you will be fishing above the thermocline.

The Hawk gives you a place to set the lines when there are no marks on the graph.

Just add a couple of split shot to them. 6-8' from the spoon.

Agree w/Leg on the placement of the weight (basically one rod length from the lure) ,  however I use rubber core sinkers because they don't nick/pinch the line.

    good luck!

These guys got a couple dozen hot spoons for me during Spring derby fishing several years ago (two day turnaround). They really helped us out.

I still use them when fishing the West end of the lake!

    Good luck!

I have always run four riggers on my 20' Lund Newport, & my current boat 22' Hewscraft Searunner  for thirty years with no trouble (both with 8' beams).  I run out and down riggers with the rigger weight fin bent so it pulls the side riggers out, & away from the boat.  I often run four riggers as deep as 160' with no issues. Most days, all riggers take fish.

    tight lines;

  9. Sore subject with me!  I live on the South shore of Oneida Lake, & the black fish eating devils were in my bay in numbers of over 250 birds for about ten weeks this fall.  They would swim across the entire bay eating anything they could catch & swallow  &%$#@*&^!!!  Called region 7 DEC & talked to a female that said that they had a boat on the lake shooting the flying rats three times a week!  Saw them a few times, boy they could only hit sitting birds, as I watched them miss a lot of the flying rats!  I asked if a landowner could get a nusence (sp) permit & was told no, & that they, the DEC have to apply to the Feds yearly to do it themselves,  To which I said now that there were less regulations @ the Fed, how about helping us out getting these permits, Didn't get a warm feeling from this person that they would do anything.

i think it might pay to get a little perspective here. First of all the original post was calling attention to a young kids as yet unexplained death. As with nearly any TV program the Wicked Tuna show  has scripted parts and when paying close attention you can often see and hear the folks reading from cue cards. Does that mean the show isnt any good or that it is "phony" in its entirety? No. After talking with Dave Marciano personally I realized that there is very little difference in his personality in real life than that projected in the show. He is a very knowledgeable, experienced  fisherman who looks at his involvement in the show as a something to augment his main income as a fisherman. Is he or the others polished professional actors? No.  Does the scripting affect the credibility of those fishermen appearing on the show? I don't think so. Contrast the show with some of the other reality shows like the Kardashian crap and it becomes clear that there is at least some social redeeming value to it. I'm always looking for the details on how they rig their baits and equipment and little "nuances" in what they are doing regarding fishing and ignore the drama stuff  which may appear interesting to folks only generally interested in fishing itself. The character Tyler McLaughlin presented on the show could be perceived a s a real pain but if you notice the kid catches some pretty big tuna...not an accident..... he knows how to fish....Is he 'likeable"? I'll leave that up to the viewer. No sense getting into a war over this stuff.... just a TV program.....

17 Tekotas replaced drag washers in the 800 after a couple seasons. No need to send them anywhere as it's a relativley easy job.

16 600's all still have the original drag washers going on 11 or 12 seasons of heavy use.

Very happy witht he quality of the reels.

Glad to hear that your Tekotas are working for you, although you found the 800 did need new drag washers.  Well that was my experience with the bakers dozen of Tekota 5, & 600's.I have.   I never said that they weren't quality reels, only the drags aren't the best,

    good luck

The new Sealines aren’t as good as the old school Sealines. Definitely a cheaper build and Okuma quality in my opinion. I had 2 last season and sold them this past winter. I run Shimano Tekota 500s & 600s on my Rigger And Diver Rods. Unsurpassed quality and Smooth drags

I run both reels, but have had to upgrade all of the Tekota drags, as the stock ones IMHO  are sticky, & don't hold up. Sealines come with good drags.
