I heard 160-200 was good today.

There are days that short leader lengths work well and days that long leader lengths work. It all depends on the mood of the fish. If they are aggressive, a short leader length will not matter as much.

I've exclusively been running the DW Standard or Michigan Stinger Stingray size spoon for kings on riggers and dipsy divers. I recognize there's a place for the magnum sized spoons, but am kind of unclear when to go with the larger size. Any insights?
I mostly run Stingray sized spoons but run mags all season. Divers or coppers are usually rigged up with Mags. Dont be afraid to run them for browns too! A lot of guys are hung up on small spoons for browns but I have taken my two biggest browns in my career on mag spoons.

The controlling factor for the ease of installation is if there is enough room to "piggyback' the new hydraulic cylinder onto the existing I/O steering cylinder
We had to drill a hole in my stringer to get it to fit.

Brian makes a good point about it only being the Gizzard Shad (at least reported right now). if it was low O2 or contamination, or disease you would thing it would be multiple species affected.
I am sitting at work next to a guy that owns a cottage on in island in the West end of Onieda and he said it was all shad and Carp but the carp had arrow holes in them. The big thing about shad is, they are at the Northern end of their range.

That's exactly what they are LO has a huge population of Gizzard Shad The DEC needs to find out what caused this die off
Don't know but usually there is winter kill with shad. No winter kill and stress from spawning? Who knows. I wouldn't be too worried about a shad die off. If it was a lot of different species, I would worry.

From the pics I saw, it looked like big gizzard shad.

I'm not sure. I will ask Eric and let you know. I believe they are steel. I know the cup holder is stainless.

Looks pretty dark blue as it comes out of the Niagara to me . And disapates as the prevailing west to east current carries it down.
It could have been possible if Lake Erie was colder than Lake Ontario. Without the temp map of Erie from the days prior, we don’t know.

Its more than likely not the Niagara plume. We had NE winds last weekend. NE winds = upwelling. Upwelling in more pronounced when water temps and densities are further apart. Right now the lake temps is not that warm. In August when the water is in the 70's, it doesn't take much to have an upwelling event.

So it did cool down? Does the cooler water bring in kings? Do you look for temperature breaks? How do you adapt to that situation?
Lots of factors involved. Time of year, How bad it upwelled, ect. Cool downs sometimes fish will be in the same area sometimes they move offshore. A full upwelling, head offshore.
-
Our intake temp at work is sitting at 47 degrees right now. It was 56 degrees Saturday before the NE wind. Not a full upwelling but temps cooled inside.

Congrats again Mike! It's cool to see the kids getting older and putting in the work!

Any one have any information on installing a stea star hydraulic unit replacing a cable steer on a omc cobra sterndrive
thanks
I just had it done by East Fork Pro Marine in Hamlin NY this spring. Install looked pretty easy. The pain in the butt part was bleeding the air out of the system.

You can't make fish eat these when they've been conditioned to hunt down what's been there. These do not help the Salmon fishery in any way. Which I'll say again, draws the most money/attention to this fishery.
You want to experiment with a species? Figure out how to make the Coho fishery better/more consistent. I haven't met an angler who doesn't love that fishery when we have good years of it.
The chances of finding bloater in a Trout or salmons stomach is next to none when their population is so low.
