  1. empty hook, thanks for replying. forgive my ignorance, but i thought fleas would collect MORE on a larger diameter (30#) line than smaller line (20#). I was thinking of using braided line, but if larger diameter lines are better, i guess i should go with mono. is that correct? does anyone else have any input on this issue? thanks a bunch, andre
  2. Hello all, i'm planning to troll for kings for my first time tomorrow. what pound test is recommended and how much of it is needed to avoid being spooled? thanks, andre
  3. Thanks for the advice. what weather station do you listen to? how far (1/2 mile, 1 mile, 2 mile etc.) are the salmon from shore this time of year? thanks, andre
  4. Hello all, i mostly fish the fingerlakes because i have a small boat. i did some brown fishing this spring on Lake O but i was following my rule of not getting far from the shore (for safety reasons in a small boat) and i had no problems. i badly want to get into some of the salmon action i'm reading about, which seems to be in 85-120 fow. HOW FAR FROM SHORE ARE THE SALMON RIGHT NOW? i could go out of rochester (preferably) or as west as olcott or east as fairhaven. i presume that if the winds are out of the south and less than 5-10mph, that 1-2 miles from the shore wouldn't be too rough. is that accurate? many thanks, andre
  5. hello all, after fishing all day yesterday in the 93 degree heat, i'm considering getting a bimini top. my boat is about 40 years old - an aluminum starcraft with a 9.9hp. What are the pros and cons of bimini tops? i know that it would be hard to cast and jig with it on, but if i were just trollilng, it seems it wouldn't be in the way too much. Can you mount bimini tops on an old aluminum boat? What are good brands that aren't too expensive? thanks a bunch, andre
  6. Chris, I've only been on Lake O. once, so i don't know where the channel or shipbuilders creek are. Do you mind sharing that info - with respect to launching in I-Bay? Thanks a bunch, andre PS is the early morning bite better than the late evening/dusk bite?
  7. 3 hp Johnson Seahorse, long shaft. Old motor (1965) but starts and runs great - motor purrs. Great for trolling or as a kicker motor. Spare prop, extra spark plugs, and owner's manual. $275, in Rochester
  8. I'm looking for a spare prop for a mariner 9.9. hp: 3 blades, 9 inch diameter X 9" pitch anyone have one they want to get rid of?
  9. Tom and Muskybob - thanks very much - that was exactly what i was looking for! andre
  10. i recently began using planer boards (the yellow "off shore" type) and realized that the type you use with a mast seems far superior - but more expensive. Does anyone have (and is willing to share) a set of building plans for making your own planer boards? many thanks, andre
  11. thanks a bunch for the info. fished about 3 hours this morning. lost about a 5# steelie at the boat. landed about a 13" yellow perch - from a perch colored rapala j-11! andre
  12. Hello all, i initially posted this in the open water forum, then realized this is the more appropriate place to aske these Qs i have a small, 16 foot starcraft that i would only go out on lake O if it's very calm. I have only been out there once last year (i'm new to the area) i am basically asking what would be the best place for me to lauch and fish ( i don't want to venture too far from the shoreline) a buddy of mine mentioned that he had heard that some were catching quite a few browns - flatlining stick baits in about 10 fow in irondequoti bay and in Lake O just east of the bay. i also read in an earlier post that i-bay needs to be dredged - that there is only a narrow channel deep enough not to get stuck. I haven't launched in i-bay and There's only one public launching ramp in i-bay correct? Can anyone give me some advice about the depths in i-bay and if the browns are indeed biting? i also saw reports that browns are biting in braddocks bay. does that mean literally in the bay or that the guys launched in braddocks bay and caught the fish in the braddocks area? thanks a bunch (esp. for what are probably very basic questions), andre

  14. i just got a new line counter reel that i'm going to run dipseys and sliders with. What type of line (monofilament, braid, etc.) do you recommend? what pound test for the fingerlakes? thanks a bunch, andre
  15. Hi all, i mostly fish the fingerlakes for trout and bought lead core this weekend for the first time: 100 yards of 18 lb test and 150 yards dacron backing. The problem is none of my baitcast reels have large enough spool capacity. i have a couple of questions: 1. can i run lead core off of a large spinning reel? 2. if i need to use a baitcast reel, how much line capacity would i need for 100 yards of 18 lb test and 150 yards dacron backing 3. finally - how important is it to have a steel spool? a friend told me that plastic spools sometimes break with lead core. thanks a bunch, andre
  16. Tom - thanks for the advice - very helpful. Shellback - you're correct - i am using braided line - i'll try your suggestion -- thanks a bunch. tight lines, andre
  17. Shellback and Chris, thanks a bunch for your info and advice. i appreciate it, andre
  18. Hello Guys, I’m still quite new to using downriggers and have never fished with anyone who uses them – so I’ve been learning on my own. This was about my 10th time to use them. I was letting my ball down (manual walker lakemaster rigger) and I didn’t suddenly stop it but the wire snapped, so I lost the terminator, ball, lure etc (expensive loss!). Do ya’ll have any explanation or advice about this? Also, I see that cabela’s sells “snubbersâ€Â
  19. hey Steve and all, i finally got the lights working - YIKES that was alot of work i am going to try to make it to hemlock saturday, but part of me wants to try seneca for LLs - i've never been to seneca or caught a keeper LL before. is this a productive time of year on hemlock for trout? if so, would you fish the north or south end? thanks, dre ps - will you be out there saturday steve?
  20. Hi Chris and John, thanks for the posts - i have been messing around with my trailer lights for 5+ hours (still haven't got them right!!!) but i hope to make it out to hemlock this weekend - i miss that lake! i have a 16' starcraft, mostly blue and drive a silver honda passport. i hope to see you/meet you out there this year. tight lines, dre
  21. Hey Chris, thanks for the reply. I didn't get my boat until late June last year. How is the trolling on hemlock for trout in the early spring? do you longline (shallow) or use dipseys/riggers? thanks, dre
  22. Hi all, i presume that hemlock is still frozen over - correct? when do you think it will be boatable? i would guess that it is accessible from the north ramp before the south ramp? is that correct thanks, dre
  23. Hi all, last summer was the first time i ever trolled and i had a blast learning a few of the basics. i did use slide divers with a little success when i was running 20 lb monofilament. Then i switched over to braided line (less stretch) and i couldn't get my slide divers to "hold in place" - they would slide down to the swivel even without being released. Have ya'll had that problem? any ideas how i can stick with the braided line and keep the slider where it's supposed to be (until a fish strikes at least!) thanks, andre
  24. Glen, Big Dave, and Dan, thanks very much for your input and advice. One of you mentioned a special kind of eyelets. I hadn't thought about that - is it OK to use wire with a regular rod with regular eyelets? thanks, andre
  25. Hi All, i trolled last year for the first time, mostly with dipseys and i bought a downrigger at the end of last season. I think i want to try using wire - especially because i like fishing hemlock and those are some spooky trout in there! 3 questions - what pound test is best for finger lake trolling (does 10# get down deep better than 30#)? also - can i fish wire with any kind of baitcast reel or do i need to get a special reel for wire? what are the best brands of wire to buy? thanks a bunch! andre
