  1. i've been there 10-12 times in the last 3weeks. both launches are fine. i've only caught trout 3 of those times. I have fished hemlock probably nearly 100 times in the last 3 years. i finally caught my first bow out of there friday - a 20", 4 pounder. jumped about 10 times - engrained in my brain forever! dre
  2. rapala j-9s, j-11s, bomber long- As, smithwick rogues - they all produce fish off of riggers dre
  3. Hello all, sorry this isn't a report but i didn't know the best place to ask this question. I want to get a very high quality vacuum sealer for fish and venison. I'd rather pay a bit more up front and get a quality product that works very well and will last a long time than buy a less expensive one that i am soon dissatisfied with. Any suggestions? I am considering the Gamesaver Turbo by Tilia. It comes with 2 pumps for a faster more complete vacuum plus a heavy-duty seal bar for 50 or more repetitive seals. It costs $280 at Bass Pro. Thanks for your input and advice, andre
  4. Hi all, i have an old 16' deep-V starcraft with a basic small boat trailer with tiny (narrow) rollers. On lakes like hemlock (without a sheltered ramp), getting it on the trailer in high winds can be very difficult. I have been thinking about how to convert my trailer into a "drive-on" trailer, but before i get to working on it, i figured it best to check with this board for info. i thought that if i mounted 2x4s of 2x6s to run 3/4 length of boat/trailer (at the correct angle and cover them with carpet), that would be sufficient - because i see many trailers like that. Then it occurred to me, that that could be fine for a boat that wasn't a deep-V (i have had trouble at some ramps loading my boat - at certain angles, the keel of my boat hits/rubs the trailer, so i have to back in more or less to get the right angle). any suggestions for how to convert my trailer so i can actually drive my deep-V onto the trailer? many thanks, andre
  5. Hello all, i have a 36 pound thrust, tiller minn kota trollling motor and i'm not the most mechanically talented dude. The knob that tightens the shaft (which allows you to control the height/depth of the propeller relative to the water and also allows a certain amount of tension so the direction of the trollling isn't flopping around every which way) stopped working. Upon inspection, i noticed that the plastic bearing that fits between the shaft and the housing that holds the knob is cracked. I tried to take off the "head" of the motor (which has the tiller attached) but the cords are so short that i couldn't get it off - i was thinking that if i took off the head, i could slip off and replace the broken plastic bearing. Do any of you have any suggestions for how i can fix it? any advice greatly appreciated, andre
  6. Hello all, i just began fishing lake O. last summer. i have a 16' boat with an 18 hp motor so i don't feel comfortable going WAY out in the lake. I did manage to get into some good kings last august. My brother from Texas wants to visit me for some lake O fishing sometime between june 20 and late july. My impression is that iwe're more likely to get kings within a few miles of shore in late July than in June. Is that correct? any info regarding timing my brother's visit will be much appreciated. Thanks, andre
  7. i just heard from a friend that even if you're fishing near the south shore, anyone fishing lake ontario must have a up-to-date passport on them. is that true? thanks, andre
  8. so far, all i have done is flyfished the LO tribs, but i did see a guy last year catching quite a few steelies while using kwikfish that he was "river trolling" from a stationary point on the bank by having a small planer board take his lure into eddies, holes, etc. the planer board was about 1/3 the size of the offshore boards that guys use trollling in lakes. do any of you know where to buy or order those smaller planer boards? thanks a bunch. dre i'm also going to post this Q on the LO trib section
  9. Well, i finally have my fixed-mount VHF and 8' antenna mounted and am planning to fish out of Sandy either Thurs pm or Fri. What channels do the fisherman use most often? my understanding is the the Coast Guard requires boats with VHF radios to be named - is that correct? It seems weird to name such a small 16' aluminum starcraft, but i think i'm gonna go with "i-fisher" over, dre (usually fishing solo out of i-fisher)
  10. i have had a nice king on (not always landed) almost everytime i have run the metallic green dipseys... dre for what it's worht, on the flx, i have done well with pink, chartreuse and blue dipseys
  11. WOW! - i just called the Okuma # that muskybob provided and got excellent customer service. Basically, all i need to do is mail them the reels and pay $8 to cover return shipping for both reels and they'll fix em up! they didn't even require me to find and send receipts. thanks a bunch muskybob! dre
  12. i ran the size 0 dipseys on the fingerlakes with some good success this year. then i started fishing lake O and got some larger rigs for running size 1 dipseys with wire. i haven't gotten used to the feeling of wire. if the purpose of wire is the no stretch, what's wrong with just running 30-50lb. braided line? thanks, dre
  13. i recently bought 7-8 j-plugs at a low price at the northern king clearance sale and the colors are not what i would think would work (white with yellow and blue spots). i want to re-paint them. what are the best colors for j-plugs. when do you start running them? do you run them off of riggers, behind dipseys or what? thanks, dre
  14. Thanks very much Tom. I understand your professional responsibilities, and take what you say simply as one fisherman to another. very much appreciated, dre
  15. Hi Tom, So you're essentially saying that you don't think either the 10' radius or the 3.5' vertically above our heads are necessary? (more like the manufacturer is being overly cautious regarding law suits etc.)? thanks, dre
  16. I just received my fixed-mount Cobra VHF radio and i bought an 8' antenna for it. As i was reading through the operating manual, it stated: 1. to avoid excessive exposure to (electromagnetic) radio frequency (RF) energy, that the antenna must be mounted a minimum of 10 feet from all people (noone should be within a 10' radius of the antenna while it is transmitting.) While my seat in the back of my 16' boat is more than 10' from the front of the boat, if i have a friend along, there is nowhere in my boat that is 10' away from both of us. 2. even more difficult for me to achieve would be the manual's instructions that "the antenna must be mounted so that its LOWEST point is at least 3.3' vertically above the heads of all personal during radio transmissions." Again, i know how easy that would be to achieve on the large boats that have different levels/decks, but on my simply, v-hull aluminum boat, i would have to mount some very weird looking extension upon which to mount the antenna in order to comply with the safety requirements in the manual. do ya'll have any advice for me on the 2 points above? is the manual being overly cautious or is it very important that i comply with those 2 points? many thanks (i want to be safe), andre
  17. now that i also fish lake O, i have purchases some daiwa sealine reels - man they seem great - i only hope they last like folks say they do. i began fishign the fingerlakes last july and bought 2 okuma magda pro 20 dxs. the drag worked fine last year but now they suck big time - the drag will be way too loose, turn the star 1 freaking millimeter and it's way too tight. Finally find a spot where its just right, then check it 10 minutes later and it's completely tight. is there any kind of repair/maintenance i can do to improve the drag or should i just throw those reels away. i have heard mixed evaluations of the accudepth reels. what are the best reels for trolling the fingerlakes and/or for flatlining or running off of planerboards in lake O? many thanks for any info, dre
  18. what's the best reel for running leadcore for kings on lake O? does the Penn 330 have enough line capacity for 10 colors plus lots of backing? thanks, dre
  19. nice going Tom! - it appears that steve has converted a die-hard fly man. i'm sure i'll be seeing you on the genny after the chrome in a few months. how about that photo steve shared with you of you in the background of that pic of me with the salmon on the genny before i knew either you or steve - small world eh? at least for obsessed fisherman in the rochester area. i went out and trolled hemlock yesterday from 6pm till midnight. one hit at 11:30 - about a 2# crappie on a large stinger spoon - my first crappie trolling and my first one in NY. needless to say, not a great fight, but should eat well. best, dre
  20. a buddy and i fished out of sandy; had 2 SD/flies and 2 riggers with spoons out by 5:30. Surface temps were 46-49 from 10fow out, as low as 43 over 140 fow. saw zero bait or fish (except for 2 lakers) for 2 and 1/2 hours. then decided to go in shallow for the last 30 minutes - zero!!! was the skunk a function of fishing after a cold front? i know the lake turned over - where do the fish go when that happens? dre
  21. thanks a bunch guys - found one at dick's in henrietta the other day and it worked great. I need another now! best, dre
  22. Hello all, i just began trollling the flx a year ago and started lake O last month. I recently got a wire set up for dipseys and flasher flies and i also have one rod and reel for lead core which i have caught several on. is copper basically a fancy version of lead core or is there a significant difference between how it functions/works. i was thinking i would be "good to go" with 2 riggers, 2 wires, and 2 lead core. part of me is hoping i don't also "need" copper. any info would be appreciated. best, dre
